I wanted to learn to tat when I was a teen (I'm 57 now). I let the matter drop (and then forgot about it) because no one around me knew how to do it. Two days ago, I ran across a reference to NEEDLE tatting. I found your videos. I was hooked (no pun intended)! Goddess bless you - you're clear and concise and a joy to watch! You took something that looked complicated and made it easy. Within an hour after watching you, I tatted a coaster! I'm so pleased with your instructions. Thank you!
This is my second day - I’ve been crocheting for about four months and was chatting with our rector about things for a Christmas stall - he mentioned a past parishioner who made tatted crosses, so giving it a try.... I haven’t got the right needle yet, but already I can see how this step will make a much better finish to the work. Thank you and God bless.
Katy & friends, Today I used this tip on a mini doily I was making for a card. It really really works! The first one I made without using the tip curled up and looked like a doll hat. When I used the tip it was almost totally flat. This is one tip I plan to remember and use in all my chain to chain tatting. Thanks Katy..and to all others...this is a must try!!!
I have tried and tried for YEARS to learn how to tat! I have 2 small books about it and 2 different shuttles. I do believe i will now just use the needles!! THANK YOU so much for this video!! Can't wait to try it out again.
I just tried your technique(Katy' secret) on a necklace and it works. I made the same necklace before and when I was finished the necklace looked like a spiral. But when I applied your technique on the same pattern the finished product had no twist and it was very easy to press. You"re a life saver, keep sharing your secrets.
Kate, I learned to tat with a shuttle using a dvd. I haven't been tatting for long. I saw a book for tatting with beads, but it was for those who had a lot more experience than me. I searched the internet and found your videos. I didn't know about needle tatting. I have since ordered needles and have been working along with you. It is so much easier that tatting with a shuttle. Thank you so much for your wonderful lessons!
I have wanted to tat since I was in my twenties and received some beautiful Romanian tatted pieces. Well, I am now in my early seventies with time on my hands. I have tried in the past and could never get the hang of using a shuttle for tatting. Needle tatting is going to be my way to learn. I am not new to crafting being an avid crocheter since age 11 and macrame since my teens plus many other crafts along with Marlin Spike even weaving nets, but this just always confused me. Now I can do it! Thank you so much. One more learning project going off my bucket list. It is funny as I was going through the first videos I actually did this step on my own just to find it as one of the "secret steps".
Hi Kate ! I have just watch your video of the "secret stitch" and I must say, you have made it seem so simple, even though I know it takes a long time learned skill such as you have, but I am now wanting to learn and am very happy you explain in a manner I can absorb! Thank you for that! I am 65 and am finally able to take time to learn all the things I never had time for! Again , thank you so much for your patience also! You are wonderful! Please keep it up!
The needle is supposed to be straight. I have a really hard grip and tend to bend my needles after a time. I try to use fresh straight needles for my videos, must have not checked well enough for this one. So glad that you enjoy the videos! Happy tatting! :)
I didn't realize that the automatic cc was so ineffective,' til today, I'm glad to know that. Now I can/will try to be more user friendly in that way, without depending on cc to get the important info across. :) Joan, you are teaching me a lot. :)
Katy, I have used the CC and yes it is more confusing. If I stop the video I can sometimes figure out what they are trying to say. It can be very humorous. I appreciate your reading my comment and commenting back. Your videos are tops...with or without text!
Thanks again for showing how to make work look flatter and better. I made a five ring flower as a pendant with chains connecting. It was hard to get it to lay right and at the joins it was a little twisted looking. After trying your technique of using that extra stitch,it looked so much better.
I am a beginner tatter. You show exactly what to do and go at the exact pace for me. What a fantastic tip. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to seeing your other videos
I searched through several videos. You my dear, have a knack for teaching. No distracting "um", "ah", and so. I have subscribed to your channel and am excited to start a new hobby. With practice I wish to become half as good as you.
Judy, thank you for your comment You are fabulous! I am very happy that you are on board here at RustiKate. Judy, you are going to make many beautiful creations! Happy tatting! :)
I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have been wanting to learn how to tatt for a long time and every one that I asked did not know what I was talking about. I got a book, and I opted for the needle instead of the shuttle. The problem I had, is how to bridge. Thank again, and I also subscribed to you.
Annita, So glad you are tatting! For me, doing the step in this video works best. It isn't exactly a lock stitch, or a knot, but serves as a guide & brace for the chain, & thus the structure of the whole work. Use this step after knotting, not in place of, & only on chains, & always in the front. I think the lock stitch you are referring to is the knot/knot variations that are used on rings and chains after they are completed, to secure them. Hope this help! Keep tatting!!! :)
I am new to tatting and I have to say that I just love your videos. I finally get it!! And I didn't have to buy a book. These videos are great!! Thanks so much!!
thank you for this video. you have reinstalled my interest of tatting. my grandmother died at the age of 88 in 1986. Needless to say when she did try to teach me how to tat I was quite young and I just couldn't get the hang of it. And I've been kicking myself, of course, since she had to stop doing it herself around 19 82 or so. I still have a few pieces of hers that she made but in the end she enjoyed making little designs for stationary. the next time I have a box of it out I will definitely show it to you. I only have her shuttles now and you using your needle make it look so easy. as soon as I am able I will be trying to learn. I miss her still. and, at 57 years old I probably should get around to it pretty soon. thank you again and I have subscribed.
Thank you for sharing your lovely story. Hope you have tried to learn needle tatting and that it worked for you! I would love to see your grandmother's work! Have you connected with me on the rustikate facebook page yet? If not, that would be a great way to share the photos with me. I see post on it much faster than on RUclips. Thank you, Cyndy.
I am very interested in this technique. My DH's grandmother tried to teach me how to tat with a shuttle, but I never could get the hang of it. Thanks so much for this awesome video !
I'm a very new tatter (as in got a book and needle kit a couple days ago lol), and I've been practicing by making a simple length of ring, and chain edging. I'm having fun, but I wasn't happy with how the chains were looking twisted... thanks so much for the great video and technique! I just subscribed, and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos 😀!!!
Many thanks Katy, I did watch and will keep that in mind. And yeas, my work does lie and look better with your special step. I often write designs I watch in another language and the abbreviations come in handy!
Katy! Thank you so much for your help in finding the pattern for your foot thongs. I'm currently working on a choker for a friend and found this special step helpful in keeping my project flat. Thanks again for all your help. Deby
Great video Katy! As I am hearing impaired I was wondering if you could add some written text to your videos. It took me several viewings to figure out what you were doing and why. But even if that's not possible keep making the videos! Yours are excellent and a huge help.
Joan, there is a small square box on the youtube video player with "cc" on it, when clicked it will give the option to turn on an automatically generated captions/text of the dialog. I checked it to make sure it works, it does, but I just realized that the automatic text is often wrong, so may be more funny than helpful. But try it & see. I have to ration my computer time, as I work through vision problems, but I will try to add more text in the future. Hope this helps! :)
Dear Rustikate, I am a South African and I love your tatting patterns but there are no books on how to learn tatting here. Can you help as it is also so difficult to read the patterns online. I know and do crotcheting
Hi Kate! Well I kind or learned tatting a little about a year ago from watching your videos! Came back for a refresher and I think maybe I can actually do some rings and chins for crazy quilting! Now if my hands would just not go numb… :) Thanks so much for your videos, if my hands would hold out I could do this for hours!
+purplepaint1 hI pp1. My name is Mary Jane. I have the same problem..awful arthritis. I found a lotion in my feed store...I think it's name is 'Grumpy Old Men' . It's in a blue bottle. I'll find the real name for you. It's non-greasy, so you don't leave residue on your work. Smells good...to me...But I love the smells of horse stuff. Hole this helps. I also use wrist support slip-on thingies. They're usually at the beginning of the of the OTC stuff in walmart. Hope it helps, MJ
Hi Mary Jane! Oh I'll have to check out the grumpy old men lotion! I have tons of the wrist support gloves! I guess I should just wear them all the time. :) I've also started wearing copper bracelets and they really do help!
I had carpel tunnel from crocheting, and used to wear a wrist support sleeve all the time for any kind of handiwork. I will some times wear it now, but not often. I find that the "speed tatting" method reduces the stress on my wrist and does not cause me pain. Maybe experiment between the two methods, traditional and the speed tatting, and see if one works better than the other. Copper, magnets, cream, wrist support or pressure sleeves, can all help. I also found that making myself relax, and not be so tense or tat so tightly, also helps, as does pacing myself, so that I do not tat all the time, but do take breaks. :) Hope there is something helpful in this reply! I am so happy that you are tatting and enjoying it! ~ Katy :)
Kendra, oh, my gosh, I'm so happy and excited to hear this! I love that you are now tatting and thank you so much for sharing your story with me! Totally gives my heart a burst of joy! :) Create many beautiful things!
I knit and crochet and I have joined a few craft sites and just found out theres a thing called tatting, yours is the first video I just saw, amazing. I am going to give this tatting a try. What projects can you make? I normally make scarves, afghans, baby clothes, recently l have learnt to make fingerless gloves, l can also make hats, just the basics and intermediate and advanced but now I want to learn tatting.
You sound like a fantastic crafter! I hope you have tried tatting now, and are loving it! I can make fine lace, like edgings and fingerless gloves, and even jewelry. I also can tat with thicker thread and even yarn to make endless projects of all kinds. It is so fun!
I too love your easy to follow directions, but I cannot see or find where that loop comes in to close the circle. Could you show that slowly and up closes? Thank you!
Sue, if you look for the video "Tatting - Closing (cl) a Ring (R.) in Needle Tatting by RustiKate" on youtube or on the RustiKate youtube channel, you should be able to see this. I hope it will help and that it is close enough! Happy tatting! :)
Hello Kati, thank you for your videos.... was getting frustrated because my chain kept turning. I have only been tatting for a week and have so many questions. As I can see in this video you lock the chain and ring. Is there a specific way of locking the chain or ring? I have seen this lock stitch applied in front like in this video. I’ve seen the work turned and then lock stitched. What’s the difference? Maybe you can explain? Would like to learn all there is to learn about tatting ... ;)
I am new to tatting. I love your work, and teaching videos! I love it all! I wanted to ask you how I could design my own patterns? Do I draw out a basic layout? How would I know how many stitches I would need? Also how do you make a split ring. I have a bit of difficulty with split rings. Is there an easier way? Thank you for your videos! I save as many as I can. You are a blessing to me. Titus 2:13 I think of you as a friend already. I live in Florida. What state are you in? Blessings to you, Claire
I am so glad that are tatting! Creating a tatting pattern can both be easy or hard. You can lay it all out before hand and that makes it hard. But the easy way is to make something you like, then using it as a guide slowly tat it again writing down the directions on how to make it as you go. To write it down, simply use the same terms and abbreviations a pattern would contain to explain what you are doing. I have a video on split rings, you should be able to find it through my Rustikate channel. Happy tatting!!!!
Yes, totally possible, and very easy! The basics, is that when you are starting a new ring (R.), leave a space, however long you want your unworked thread to be, between you previous ring (R.), and where you place your needle against thread to start next ring (R.). I have not had a chance to do a video on this yet. But a British lady has, if you youtube search "Unworked Thread Space in Needle Tatting by TheWalnutBaby" you should be able to find it. She does a good job. Hope this helps! Happy tatting! :)
Hola me llamo betza, decirte que me encantan tus trabajos que realizas son muy lindos Felicitaciones........ tengo una pregunta quisiera saber que tipo de hilos usas y que numero...... gracias bye
Katy, don't you reverse work after doing a ring or chain? I thought it was always necessary to do that. If you have a better way, please make a tutorial of it!! I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW. THANKS.
I read about your vision problems. I use dragon dictate to do a lot of my writing on the computer works great..you may find other programs cheaper to use but will be very helpful to you...take care
Can you recommend thread options for me. I am looking to use some nice thread that when the project is finished it looks as nice as it should. I find regular crochet thread to be kind of cheap looking...
I like DMC threads a lot, they have many that are very sturdy, beautiful, and smooth (they slide very easily off the needle), and look great as a finished items. My favorite, because it look old fashioned and rustic, is DMC Braque Crochet thread size 10, in ecru. :)
+Aditi Khade Thanks, and I will try. :) For videos that I already have up, that are too fast for you, have you tried the RUclips speed adjustment? There is an option on the screen to reduce the video speed, that might help. :) Happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
Amy, the knot will hold the tatting together if you cut to size for edging, if you cut the edging to size leaving extra space between where you cut and where you want the tatting to end. It is best if you do not need to cut your tatting (if you can make it to size or tat directly onto the object you are edging). To explain better, in case you do need to cut it: Cut your tatted edging roughly an inch further down your tatting then you need. Then un-do/unravel the tatting back to the knot at the place you want your edging to stop. With the thread ends that you exposed, make an extra knot if desired (for extra strength), then hide ends of thread and cut extra off, as if you had just finished tatting.
Hello Kate lovely to know about you. I so so badly want to do tatting got everything I need butter I so wished you would just consider the new beginners please don't race like that take it slow.God Bless in every thing you teach others.
Can you explain again? I am not sure what you are asking for. Sorry. :/ This was in English, and it is not a full tutorial of a project, it is just meant to be a helpful tip. What design are you looking for? :)
I like all three, and since I leaned shuttle tatting first, it is easiest for me - However, even though I have crocheted for many years, crotatting is difficult for me.
I personally like all three. In teaching people, I find it is easiest to teach needle tatting. In fact, many people who have never been able to master any other art or craft, are able to learn and do needle tatting, and very well, and pretty quick. I believe that it is easiest if starting from scratch. If a person is good at weaving, or macrame, then it will probably be easier for them to shuttle tat (also some personalities it is very suited for), same with cro tatting, if they have skills and are used to similar movements, than that technique will be more natural.
Hello! Could it be possible to re-do the 1st 2 videos on tatting. You were a little far form the camera and I cannot see what you were doing. TY, or if you did could you pls send me the links... TY again and HN 2014.
I can't send you links, because youtube doesn't allow me to attach links in comments. But if you look at my RustiKate youtube channel I think you'll be able to find videos on all the basics that will be helpful. Happy tatting! :)
hello could it be possible if you could do this first video again but slower this time as am just beginning to try doing this and you were just a bit too fast
I'm sorry it is too fast. I wish I could do it slower, but if I do it slower then the video ends up a lot longer and then I can't get it uploaded to youtube because of my internet connecting. Maybe try watching a little bit and then pausing it, and re-watching each part. Just take it slow. I have heard that there is an app that you can get that makes it so that you can slow down videos. I haven't tried it, but maybe that would work/help.
Hello:) I recently started needle tatting and sometime when I try to slip the chain or loop of the needle it gets stuck and won't slide off... Any tips?:)
Sorry, just saw your question. Try making the stitches only slightly more loose on the needle. They should slide easily and freely. Some designs will need tighter work, but you could also try changing needle size. Thread might not be small enough to pull thru on some. Go up and try once maybe?
Simone, the ladies that replied to you are right on. Hope that you found their comments helpful, and are having a blast with tatting. If you are still having trouble with this, let me know (?) and I will be glad to try and help. Happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
It depends on what the boo-boo is, there are a lot of easy fixes. If you can connect with me on the rustikate facebook page and share a picture of what kinds of boo-boos keep happening, I can try and give a few tips! :)
You can sometimes find them at Joann's Fabrics. That is where I first discovered it. But I buy mine in bulk from DMC directly, now,, because I use so much. I also sell a few on my etsy shop, because I love it so much. But I am currently out of stock of everything except white. I do have a few white left. They sell fast. My shop is here, if you want to check it out: www.etsy.com/shop/RustiKate

Great tip. I'm going to use it on my project that I'm working on.
Yay, I am so glad! I hope your project turned out great! Happy tatting, Leona! ~ Katy :)
Thank you so much Katy😘 This will surely improve my work Going to try it right now
Thank you so much, this will correct something that really bugs me. Love love love your videos.
Great ideia!! Thank you very much!!
Would like to learn all there is to learn about tatting ... ;)
Thanks for this great tip, please keep making more videos!
Should now be a new CC/transcript for this! Working on more.
Very helpful, thank you!
Kate, your vidios are great and helped me a lot. Is it posible to leave unworked thread in needle tatting?
Yes, totally possible, and very easy! The basics, is that when you are starting a new ring (R.), leave a space, however long you want your unworked thread to be, between you previous ring (R.), and where you place your needle against thread to start next ring (R.). I have not had a chance to do a video on this yet. But a British lady has, if you youtube search "Unworked Thread Space in Needle Tatting by TheWalnutBaby" you should be able to find it. She does a good job. Hope this helps! Happy tatting! :)
Thank you for the beautiful videos. Can you do an edging video
Hola me llamo betza, decirte que me encantan tus trabajos que realizas son muy lindos Felicitaciones........
tengo una pregunta quisiera saber que tipo de hilos usas y que numero...... gracias bye
Alejandro, hi! Thank you! I use DMC Baroque Crochet Cotton, size 10. :)
So happy to hear that!!! :)
Katy, don't you reverse work after doing a ring or chain? I thought it was always necessary to do that. If you have a better way, please make a tutorial of it!! I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW. THANKS.
Reversing work is done often, but not always. Here is a video: ruclips.net/video/s9Y_FsuYs6o/видео.html Hope this helps! :) Happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
Love your videos! What thread do you use?
Thanks, and I love Yoda! :) I like DMC Baroque Crochet thread, it is size 10 thread.
Hi, how do you determine how long to make the tail? Also how do you keep it from twisting? I am SO frustrated ! ! !
Looks great, however working a bit fast for me to see what you are doing, just a thought
nice tutorial thank-you for the sharing
That is awesome, super glad to hear it! :)
I read about your vision problems. I use dragon dictate to do a lot of my writing on the computer works great..you may find other programs cheaper to use but will be very helpful to you...take care
You are so nice, Brenda, for thinking of sharing that with me. I will have to try that! :)
I'm so glad! Happy tatting! :)
Precioso y genial técnica con aguja.
Thank you very much! Happy tatting!!!!
I loved it but is it hard to learn how to tat
Take it slow, be patient with yourself. It will come. :)
Dear Katy, I love your tatting! I'm a new tatter and was wondering if you have any tips on fixing boo-boos in tatting? Thanks, Ingra
do you do your special step before or after the knot
11
can you do this left handed? and do you do your special step for the first chain?
Yes, you can do it left handed. And I do the special step on every chain after the first chain.
great tip. Thanks
Happy tatting!!! :)
Its really very good but for beginners u should go little slowly
+Aditi Khade
Thanks, and I will try. :) For videos that I already have up, that are too fast for you, have you tried the RUclips speed adjustment? There is an option on the screen to reduce the video speed, that might help. :) Happy tatting! ~ Katy :)

Will the knot at the end of the chain prevent the work from unraveling if it has to be cut to size for an edging?
Amy, the knot will hold the tatting together if you cut to size for edging, if you cut the edging to size leaving extra space between where you cut and where you want the tatting to end. It is best if you do not need to cut your tatting (if you can make it to size or tat directly onto the object you are edging). To explain better, in case you do need to cut it: Cut your tatted edging roughly an inch further down your tatting then you need. Then un-do/unravel the tatting back to the knot at the place you want your edging to stop. With the thread ends that you exposed, make an extra knot if desired (for extra strength), then hide ends of thread and cut extra off, as if you had just finished tatting.
great jobbbbbbbb!
Hello Kate lovely to know about you. I so so badly want to do tatting got everything I need butter I so wished you would just consider the new beginners please don't race like that take it slow.God Bless in every thing you teach others.
Thank you! :)
I need the tutorial for this design from starting n in English pls help
Can you explain again? I am not sure what you are asking for. Sorry. :/ This was in English, and it is not a full tutorial of a project, it is just meant to be a helpful tip. What design are you looking for? :)
Hey
I wanted to know what's the easiest way to tatt
cro tatt
needle tatt
Or with the shuttle??
Thank you
I like all three, and since I leaned shuttle tatting first, it is easiest for me - However, even though I have crocheted for many years, crotatting is difficult for me.
PLEASE DO SO I LOVE TO LEARN AND TATTING LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF FUN... TY
hi for a beginner what size of needle and thread would i use ty
size or number 5 needle and size 10 thread. Hope this helps!
hello could it be possible if you could do this first video again but slower this time as am just beginning to try doing this and you were just a bit too fast
I think there is a way to slow down video speed in settings top right of screen🤔
Simone Kinch watch your tension while working ..you'll get into a rhythm and it will be more even as you are more comfortable with it ;-)
Great feedback! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for leaving this feedback! Right on! :)
Simone, the ladies that replied to you are right on. Hope that you found their comments helpful, and are having a blast with tatting. If you are still having trouble with this, let me know (?) and I will be glad to try and help. Happy tatting! ~ Katy :)
So glad! :)
It depends on what the boo-boo is, there are a lot of easy fixes. If you can connect with me on the rustikate facebook page and share a picture of what kinds of boo-boos keep happening, I can try and give a few tips! :)
Super
She may be going fast but she didn’t say it was for beginners.
Hello, Janie! I hope these videos will help you as you learn more about tatting. Keep tatting and enjoy! :)
RustiKatei
Me lo regalas en español. Que soy sub
which thread is dis
DMC size 10 Baroque crochet thread.
what brand of thread is that
Hi, Jackie! It is DMC Baroque crochet cotton :)
thank you where do you buy that
You can sometimes find them at Joann's Fabrics.
Can't see because of the words!
Hi you to so fast but is look very nice ☺
If it is too fast to be helpful, youtube has an option to use slow mode. It could help! :)
