Thanks a ton for this wonderful presentation I am a big fan of ur father n his harikatha esp prahalatha sarithram n geethopatgesam. Had an opportunity to meet him in SBI mount road office as my friend was working under ur father 👍
Great and enchanting presentation on the life & times of the legend SKR! One question still remains unanswered as to why he was NOT awarded the Sangita Kalanidhi title during his lifetime or even posthumously to his wife/disciple Mrs. Bhushani??
AFAIK, Kalanidhi has a rule that it not be conferred posthumously. Even the Kalaimamani, which he was selected to receive has such a rule, and as a result, he never got it. It's not unique to India, either. The Nobel Prize is the same in this regard. As to why he never received it during his life, it has long been the case that there are political facets to the Kalanidhi. Lately, popularity has also taken over as a bigger factor. SKR went not only against convention, but also against a lot of the standard orthodoxy, treading waters that a lot of artists at the time rejected as "not real music". We all love him now, and he was appreciated during his time by a narrow circle of artists and rasikas, but he also faced endless criticism and was shunned by many traditionalists and influential artists (Semmangudi especially hated his guts). Though even aside from his music, he got plenty of flak for his personal life, which tainted popular view of him. The fact that he married his student really added fuel to the fire. GNB got some similar criticisms as well, which one would expect considering how much of a transformation in Carnatic performance came about because of him... But GNB was willing to lick the right boots, play nice with the right people. It also didn't hurt that he was good looking in his prime. Either way, SKR was not willing to lower himself in that way. MSG had the same problem as well, and hard lined traditionalists hated that he would blend Hindustani idioms into Carnatic performances, but he lived long enough for the tides to change.

Thank you so much for this content. I very much admire SKR for his genuine passion in music and picking and popularizing rare ragas like rasikapriya, dharmavathi etc. I feel that he likes Prathi Madhayamam note a lot (I too love it) that in most of his songs I hear a raga which uses Prathi Madhayamam :)
Even those who have no taste for music would be mesmerized by this
Beautiful presentation

To the best of my knowledge, the Sangeetha Kalanidhi is not awarded posthumously.

Worthy discipje of the legendary G.N.B
God of Music probably liked him most that's why he was taken away unexpectedly.
By not honouring this man with Sangeetha Kalanidhi Music academy has done a great mistake.
