As any great producer will tell you:
If you want to achieve a massive sound, you need to focus on your recordings.
Your recordings capture the vibe and emotions of the band in the moment, and you won’t be able to recreate that feeling later if you get this wrong.
However, recording isn’t easy. Let alone tracking a full band performing live together in the same room!
In this comprehensive guide, Manny walks you through the entire recording process step by step.
From room treatment, to placing microphones, amps and FX chains, and setting up a headphone mix, all the way to the final tracking session.
You’ll discover every detail that goes into capturing a captivating, larger-than-life Rock recording!
We’ve included the all multitracks of ‘Girl’ by Manny’s band The Chavez Ravine.
The choice is yours: Mix the song, create a remix by adding your own parts, or simply study the details of every track, as well as the arrangement.
As the driving force of the group Distortion Felix, Manny Nieto got bit by the recording bug after working with recordist Steve Albini on their I'm An Athlete album in 1999. Manny quickly built a studio in East Los Angeles, Manny's Estudio International, and soon bands like Chokebore, The Breeders, Vaz, Health, Trash Talk, and even Los Lobos, were tracking records there. But a decade on, something snapped in the head of Manny Nieto, and soon he was off on a recording odyssey that took him to China and Southeast Asia, including the cities of Singapore, Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Chengdu - even venturing into New Zealand for sessions. Along the way he recorded some of the best acts that you may have never heard, like Pairs, Poubelle International, Reign Lee, UNiXX, Boys Climbing Ropes, Snapline, Forget the G, Proximity Butterfly, Hedgehog, Chui Wan, Cheating Sons, In Each hand a Cutlass, and Obedient Wives Club.
Thanks, Manny. You’re very generous with your time and so freakin smart.
Excellent, Manny. Some interesting and not predictable mic choices. And, I appreciate where you suggested some cheaper alternatives. Top man
Thanks and appreciated you checking out ;)
For snares the Ludwig Supraphonic is the all time go to for studio recording and believe it or not the Pearl Sensitone sounds great. My last recording I did with a punk band I had to retune an entire Ludwig Cavern kit, Supraphonic, and used my own Cymbals. And got to witness Reel to reel tape splicing and editing 1st hand it was so cool.
I appreciate a lot what this guy makes, what a problem for those with so much, doing much less than this guy! Congratulations and all the best to you,
Awesome t-shirt! Excellent film. One of my favorites and probably one of the best sequels of all time. Just had to comment about that:)
3:02 Really smart approach if you have the channel count and mics to pull it off.
So nice that you share great knowledge in such a down to earth and nice manner. Cheers Manny & produce like a pro:)
Thank you MM for sharing ;)
I record drums in much the same way - Glyn Johns as well as conventional, and then I decide in the mix what works, sometimes a combination. You can use different setups for different parts of the song, like GJ for the verse and wide modern for the chorus, and perhaps just the front kick and overhead for a retro mono vibe in the bridge. Glyn Johns works great when the drummer plays with lots of dynamics, like jazz drummers often do, you get a better blend of how they hear the drums. Great video, thanks Manny!
Great info Manny. I'm gonna give the floor room mic technique a try with my pair of Oktava MK-012's with the omni capsules -- also, you mentioned Stager mics out of Nashville. I have a pair of their SR-2N ribbon mics and have been using them as overheads for a few sessions. Really great if you have lower ceiling in your room (like mine) to round off the highs from the cymbals and they just have a really nice smokey phatness to them. And if you need more topend they take eq really well. Thanks again for taking the time to impart your wealth of knowledge -- much appreciated.
Always and same at you for sharing how you plan to use the above as well.
Can I ask that if those tom mics are identical with the Audio Technica Midnight Blues series?
I’m not sure except when I need some I search ATH230s
👍✌😎

A drum miking video with no audio samples. This is why RUclips got rid of the "dislike" button.
