That's some classic English humour mentioned "the area used around Las Palmas used to grow tomatoes, until 15 years ago it was discovered that the arid land also grows concrete and the planting has gone on ever since."
Thumbs up on that one Thames Tv. 👍🤣🤣🤣
Brits had a great dry humor in the old days
There's a much more Lucrative Crop grow in them there Hills🍁🍁🍁😜 Now ,Cha,cha.😜🤣.
I was there as a teenager in about 1986...so this brings back memories! I have to say I had a brilliant time! 😆👍
Love the bloke going up to the buffet in his Speedos 😄
How nice to look at earlyer times,we came for the first time in 1971,we loved it!(still)
Mi tierra Gran Canaria ❤❤❤
My God I was in England at that time, I'm from canary islands, people didn't know where it was I had to show it on a map. Thames, London week television, I love that 😘😘
"Wish you where here"? I WAS there at this Time! 😮😄
"It's a big, sprawling, characterless resort.."
What a ringing endorsement.
"You should write for Hallmark" 😄
Journalist's being honest - a sign of the past.
@@fluxington Good point. At least you knew what you were in for, I suppose.
Used to grow tomatoes.. Now growing concrete.
"A holiday industrial estate" 😀
I love this!! Thank you for posting!!
The Hotel Tamarindos is now the Paradisus
I never realised at the time how blunt and ironic the commentary was. As for naked flesh around the buffet...... Don't think they'd allow that these days lol. Still a great place for winter sun, let's hope their tourist trade recovers after covid, sad to see so many places shut or deserted right now.
I go there twice a year I love it but then I'm Irish I love anywhere that's warm
My island 😍😍😍
This must be before the obesity epidemic.
😂😂😂
Good coment! 👍
And before tattoos became compulsory!
Yes, and before the sea of drunken "bruises and graffiti"
My lovely island
Honeymooned in Hotel Tamarindos in 1981; my first time abroad, I loved it.
Location scenes for the Cliff Richard film Wonderful Life were filmed there in the early 1960s.
Gran Canaaaria

Que recuerdos, en el video se ve un camión se 7UP , trabajé en esa época de repartidor en esa zona de Seven up
Went here with friends in 1990. Coming of age trip. Seems like yesterday.
we were in Andalusia around this period, where my fathers from.
Hotel taramindos is still there and looks quite a nice gaff now.. Altho its called Melia Taramindos..
Never as simple as looks - It wasn't just a case of Chris turning up with a camera crew. The "WYWH" team would have done a "recce" two or three weeks before shooting. They would have to pick the best sites for filming, obtain filming permission, ask local propiotiers if they would be willing to be interviewed on camera for the show, arrange parking for the equipment trucks, hire somebody to guard them, book accommodation for the crew and presenters, etc all before they could start filming.
Awesome
After years of stress and over work..... two years of pandemic, stress and fears... Im not sure if workers of spanish "industry"are OK to work at same level as before. Good luck to all. Thnks to all of u
Bendiciones a todos
That was an interesting find. That big white stepped hotel near the beach, Corallium Dunamore was there in 1980! I've only been going to GC for a few years and I've assumed that's a very new hotel! And in September I'm staying at the Buenos Aires, near Jumbo - and that was there too.
And how blunt the commentary was. 'Sprawling and characterless' I think he said. Wow.
Hello,
nice movie from Playa del ingles and San Agustin. Enjoyed it.
For a long time I have had a project that will compare impressions from old times (80s and 90s) with current images.
In this context, a request. Can I copy material from your GC-films and use it in a new film? That would be great.
Would be nice to get a positive answer.

Stayed there in the early 70s at the Hotel Beverly near the Wi kii ki.
I remember the fishermen's shanty huts dotted along the coast at that time and it wasn't to long after that they were knocked down by building developers an the fishermen had to move on else were or become farmers.
Soux city was a fun place to visit as a kid, i think they filmed some Hollywood cowboy films there ?
Also them times there was no problem for a kid to buy a replica gun from the cowboy town shop and bringing it back hone in them day's, i think that they fired starting pistol caps as well .
Visited again 30 years ago and couldn't believe the development from there all the way to Purto Rico. and Morgan. Over the many years now I've preferred Malta for the sun, sea, great food and culture.
I'm writing this is 2024 when the Canary Islanders are marching in their thousands & shouting 'tourists go home'. Good luck with maintaining your way of life with the back-braking work of growing tomatoes again. Adios!
Brilliant
3:50 Hotels were expensive in 1980, £312 One Week half board (Inflation calculator suggests that's the same as £1300 in 2024). Forward to 2024, I've just booked a 3* hotel in Tenerife half board for One Week for £450
Traslated into English the beach will be: "The English(man)'s beach". Greetings from Gran Canaria.
Nowadays there are more looky looky men than tourists
Puerto Rico far nicer . Amadores beach is stunning 🤩
You're not really selling it to me.
Playa del Ingles is where I go on holiday now and then . And yes it's to rented apartments. And Las Palmas is a great place to visit.
It's funny seeing how it was in the 1980's.
I always wanted a wife like Judith Chalmers. Never at home.
😂
Hotel ' ells bells"..
chippings with everything
@@alfienoakes6441 you think we eating this rubbish.
Welcomings Welcomings.
Where's Mr Farkyarse

£15 per day to hire a car - 41 years ago!
Beautiful ladys xx
I kind of decided to help Maapalomas (many pigeons) economy - going 4th year in a row now. Yes its concrete, yes yumbo looks old, and Cita is a pieces of disart in itself, but dunas are magnificent, people ale welcoming, its uber safe, hot, sunny, There are decent waves to enjoy ocean or go say Puerto Rico for swimming proper. Great mountain views many barrancos to explore if one wants to get out of the town.
As awful in 1980 as in 1998 when I went. Chris hit the nail on the head.
2:03 Roy Hodgson hasn't changed
He didn't like it did he. Even the Costa Brava was better. As expensive as the West Indies ... and it's rubbish!! Like Arab souks with expensive drinks and too many Germans. Chris! Chris! We are not worthy of your honesty. Rip of Swedes as well.
Not a fatty or a tattoo in sight, what a refreshing change.
No mention of bars pubs booze night clubs.. He must of led a dull existence
Grand C'narrrrria
How depressing
Too crowded, I prefer the naturist beaches.
Hey they worked out it grew concrete 🤣😂🤣😂 ah the days before skin cancer 😥😥
Gran Canaria > West Africa (Part of EU)
Very Americanized.. especially the tourist areas.. 👈
The weather is great , but goodness me the Yumbo needs demolishing
It was awful then and still is
You had to go to the interior of the island otherwise its benidorm.
Simply not true. Plenty of tat in P del Ingles but the Faro 1 area around Meloneras and Maspalomas is very upmarket with some truly beautiful developments
By law very holidaymaker had to lay an egg.
Isle of Sheppey in the sun HORRIBLE
the abomination that is tourism 😥
True
Makes you wonder why we travel, why we spend good money? For the heat, the beach, the trinkets, cultural permission to go round half naked, cheap drink & food, boxed into a concrete room with views of the urban jungle, going on all the recommended tours and visiting all the recommended spots & eateries, then convincing yourself you had a great holiday on the plane home! ✈️😎
Of the course there is mainly two reactions to this insight (a) Let's go now to the Playa del lngles, or (b) Let's take lots of drugs to help us hang on!! 😁
@@James_BAlert Traveling is not the same as tourism... nothing wrong with traveling wherever you want to go, visiting places, cities and so on, but tourism... that's another story
Worked in tourism for 2 years. Put me off any form of organised travel for life. Some of the punters wouldn't have been out of place in a zoo while most of the hotel managers and local tour operators were just shysters touting jerry-built hotel rooms and crappy tours designed to fleece your pockets.
