After watched this film about 8 years, even if I already forgot the title of this film, this dive, silent then parachute moment still melt in my memory. I just want to apprecaite the director, he gave audience such breathtaking moment.
After the great stunt, we have a great song named 'Nobody Does It Better". After the song, we have a great film ahead. Those lines pretty sum up 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.
Tom Cruise's new stunt for Mission Impossible 7 definitely took inspiration from this. Its always good to see practical effects and real stunts in modern movies.
Sylvester was the first man ever to do a skiBASE jump. He spent two weeks at Mt Asgard on Baffin Island waiting for ideal weather conditions with the location unit. The 30 seconds of footage cost about £250,000 - a huge sum in the 1970s.
@@iainmcclure416 Only 1 camera caught the whole thing. They had multiple cameras set up around the mountain. If you watch closely the skis fall off of his feet in the air and 1 of them nearly punctured the parachute.
Hands down, this is my *FAVOURITE* opening sequence of all the Bond films. OMG... An actual skiing BASE jump off of a cliff? *This* is why CGI will never best practical special effects stunts! Can you imagine computer animators coming up from scratch every nuance depicted in the freefall?
Nice scene. Always one of my favorites. But you can see they must have had several takes because the track leading up to the cliffs edge has been skied before this shot. I doubt if there are many casual skiers doing this on a remote part of Baffin Island Canada.
Apparently the stunt was only performed once. The stunt guy considered it to be a dangerous stunt and at that time he was the only person able to do it. He waited several days before the weather was clear and once he had a window of opportunity he went for it. The trail in the snow was, I believe, because they had to ski to the edge to check all was safe just before he did it etc... There are interviews with him on youtube. These days they would remove the trail with CGI...
Everybody needs to forget about this phenomenal stunt because we're all supposed to be amazed when Tom Cruise does the same stunt in the latest Mission Impossible movie.
Some amazing work here, but a modern audience can't help notice the back projections when Roger is in frame. The man could ski, could they not have filmed the shots of him on while he was really skiing?
@@Granto-ni9qw no problem there have stuntmen who died during the Bond series run including Bob Simmons one of the more well known stuntmen died at 65 in 87 and John Jordan was injured during filming of OHMSS and was killed filming Catch-22 while filming a stunt in a plane.

The clumsy cuts to roger moore clearly on a soundstage are hilarious, in the parachute cut he isn't even grabbing the parachute pulls lol very funny.. comments here are talking about CGI but let's talk about how diva actors from this day couldn't possibly do their own stunts and how actors like Keanu and Jackie Chan or even Tom Cruise have set such high standards since then.
Probably the greatest opening sequence in movie history-breathtaking!
was super cool.
The jump was filmed on Baffin Island, in a region with some of the tallest precipices on the planet. :)
Because only Bond would go skiing with a parachute pack.⛷
The total silence from the jump of the cliff to para opening is music to ears and feast to eyes!
When i saw this at the cinema back in 1977 the whole audience clapped and cheered when the parachute opened!
A question for you. How did the film look back in 1977? Pristine quality like this or was it like watching 360p on a full HD screen?
Me too, the whole place erupted in huge cheers.
...and rightly so!
Ha ha great memories,I watched Moonraker, coming back from France,on a Townsend torsend ferry, something I will always remember
Thats cool, happy days back then.
Hands down, the best opening sequence of any Bond film.
The spy who loved me is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING James bond movie
Rest in peace Sir Roger Moore
Utterly utterly epic! Off the scale fantastic.
Rick Sylvester.....is his name.....give him the credit. He will forever be part of cinema and base jumping history. I bow to you Sir Rick!

Thanks, Sir Roger Moore 😊

Still incredible, super awesome!
James Bond films will never die ever
.
Rick Sylvester made that jump in July 1976 off of Mount Asgard on Baffin Island in northern Canada.
You mean Roger didn't do that stunt?
Would have been a much better film if Roger Moore would have actually taken the time to learn how to freaking ski ?
He was a teenager when he did it

Magic opening
the very best ever
RIP Roger Moore
It's only half of the opening sequence, but the parachute stunt is still great, obviously!
This was the most expensive stunt ever made at that time, and still is! :) So cool!
generalaxel hi Dr
This even got the future King of England on his feet.
Oh James...Union Jack parachute really? You're meant to be a SPY!
I was thinking that was kind of dumb for a spy it was still cool though
But it's that kind of goofiness that makes Moore's Bond fun
Not to mention a yellow suit, just Moore fun from this Bond. Love it.
Union Jack parachute, standard MI6 issue.

Nope.
Three takes.
I wonder if the skis and ski poles are still there in the snow someplace.
No Body Does It Better !

The last scene was shot in Canada, according to Wikipedia
this scene is so cool

King in Yellow,
the bad guys after seeing the parachute: Ah, we are fighting the British. Thanks for the info!
I gotta a fever and the only remedy is more BOND!

Kind like the way we go from non stereo sound to stereo sound when he lands, whether that is just how it was recorded, not sure Lol.
It's an error, only one channel is playing.
very nice
Just watched Rick Sylvester on an old episode of "To Tell the Truth."
YES
Tom Cruise will do a similar stunt in the next Mission Impossible movie no 7. ...
These BLUE SCREEN sequences hurts in my eyes
I may be wrong , but I was told the stunt man was killed a few years later ?! Could be wrong ??
Rick Sylvester who performed the stunt is still alive today.
