This music was written without lyrics for quite some time, it was the passing of Myke's father that fostered the creation of the words and melodies. "What it means to me is realizing that you have been asleep for seemingly your whole life, as I have felt until being slapped in the face by life. Something like the death of a parent can really do that to you, I found out the hard way as I'm sure everyone does. It puts things in perspective, and let's you know what is truly meaningful in life. That is what this song is about, that moment of realization." - Myke Penney
During the recording process, the band actually recorded all of the guitars and bass before doing the drum parts. They used their normal live rigs with some additional amps here and there for some different flavors when under the microscope. A little unorthodox (to record drums after guitars and bass), but it worked as the band worked with an excellent team at EMAC studios, Matt Grady at the desk recording engineering and mixing, Nick Fetchison assistant engineer and then Noah Mintz mastering at his studio in Toronto. As well, our good friend Jeff Cox on the drums providing the beats. We couldn't do it without these excellent people.
The riffs and solos from this song are inspired largely by hard rock bands from the 70's, even leaning a little into prog territory, and even grunge like guitar sounds, Take Me Away has endless layers and meaning behind it, it's the farthest step The Jailbirds has taken outside of their comfort zone genre-wise this far.
