I've been building websites on webflow for 8 years and I don't understand why this thing is necessary.

I don’t think anyone is saying it’s necessary. It’s definitely not necessary but it is a very welcome feature. Especially for bringing newer CSS to your design without having it in an embed or in the page/site Custom code areas which as you know, don’t render in the designer.
