I have been studying in Germany for 2 months and have 3 more to go. Before coming I watched your videos and my list of things is almost like the one in this video.
Sonia, for the last 9 years I have had multiple trips each year, flying here and there between 1 to 3 times every year and I thought I was an experienced traveler. Experienced yes, but I am still finding useful tips from your youtube videos. Keep up the good work.
HI, I am going to London for a month for summer school. Which means night outs and travelling. I have seen you videos on London, they are amazing. It gets my super excited. My packing plan is all mixed up from tourist shoes and bags, to clothes and makeup. Lots of summer dresses to night outs. Thank you :)
Love this! I shared it with the study abroad office at the university that I teach at! I will say that in terms of buying sheets and towels it's usually just easier to buy it there.
OMG Your channel is like gold for me. I will travel to Toronto, Canada in January for 4 mounths and your videos are helping me so much ! Thanks you Sonia ! I
A note about bringing medication with you on trips: countries have different laws and rules about what you can and cannot bring into the country. For example, I think Japan has a rule that you can only bring 1-3 months of prescription medication into the country. If you buy a year's worth and try to bring it in, it could be confiscated you will have wasted your money. Also if you're REALLY attached to certain comforts from home, like GOOD deodorant or tampons, I suggest bringing enough of those things to last your stay or asking your mom to ship you some! A lot of countries don't necessarily have those things, at least in the same quality that we're used to. Do your research before you pack.
I'm on a 5-week study abroad program in Chicoutimi, Québec right now so I wish this came out two weeks ago haha. But I *did* pack light by watching all of your other videos. I managed to fit everything in a carry-on suitcase and my backpack. My apartment ended up being on the top floor of our residence building and there's only stairs... Haha thanks for all of your awesome tips Sonia :)
I wish this video already existed when I was packing in December 2013 for my 7 months in Berlin. It was a tough transition from the freezing winter to the hot, humid summer. Your last tip was definitely one I would have benefited from, ha!
thank you so much for this video. This summer i am going from spain to china to Ecuador and then straight after going to Vancouver for a year to study. I was panicking about my suitcase and although i still am i feel much more confident! ahahha thank you so much. love your videos
May I chime in? (I studied abroad for 5 months) & ended up taking some larger toiletries (shampoo, face wash, etc) with me and was so glad I did! Depending on where you go you might not have access to what you want. If you are picky with those kinds of things (like myself) than you might want to consider packing them away (with lots of tape & inside baggies!) in your check in. But I agree with the hair tools! Thanks for another great vid :)
Depending on which country you go to, you can also find a local amazon equivalent. For example, G-market in South Korea is an amazing, cheap online store for toiletries, towels, cereal, everything. With local services, you can even get cheap same day delivery.
Omggggg yay! This is so useful especially when i'm in the midst of planning!! Woohoo!! All your vidoes have so much great tips! Thank you Sonia!!! Give you alllll my loves. Haha. Anyway, could you do a video on best countries/cities to visit solo? As i'm planning to travel a bit before school term starts! xx
I wish you posted this a year ago when I studied abroad in London. I OVERPACKED. And I mean OVERPACKED! It was a nightmare. I definitely learned my lesson for future adventures abroad! Thanks Sonia :)
Sonia Gil, Hi! I'm Ahmed, from Islamabad. Let me be straight to the point, Sonia, I am very inspired by the way you teach languages and such videos too! My oh my! You're so efficient and coherent. Love and regards...
Thank you so much for making this video! I leave in 16 days to live in London for the summer and let me tell you, packing has been the most dreadful thing on my to do list! I find all of your videos so incredibly helpful so thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us :-)
I'm studying abroad in Granada, Spain! We are a family of three. Our little Elvira Samadhi was born November 3, 2012. We LOVE to TRAVEL. We sold everything we owned to chase our dreams of traveling, living abroad and learning languages! Andrew is from Indiana and I (Jiovana) am Mexican-Spanish. Join us!! On our adventures in different countries while trying to be the best parents we can be to our sweet Elvira!!! WE DO BILINGUAL VLOGS!
I remember seeing this video only a year ago, and finally I get to use it! Lucky me, I only have to pack for 1 season weather, as I'll spend my 6 month semester in Hong Kong! :D Thanks for your advice Sonia!
Haha, I'm actually a month away from finishing studying abroad... But this is still a great video to share with my friends who are planning in it. Thanks Sonia!!!
I'm kind of in the same situation... I'm thinking of bringing my puffy northface parka, but I think I'm going to put it in a big ziplock bag and compress the air out!
+Natalie Marie I personally never used one of those bags and have heard mixed reviews. If you have them around go ahead and try, but before you go out and buy one, you may want to think about if it's worth it. I had a huge east pack suitcase bag thing (90L) and I could just roll and stuff all my things, but if you have a structured suitcase maybe it's worth trying the compression bags.
Oh Gosh! I must have watched this one year ago before packing 42 kg to stay 7 months in Australia LOL (and pay $200 for extra luggage when I was going back)!!! Love your videos Sonia and come back to Brazil for more adventures!
Great advice Sonia Gil thank you very much! Of course for us Venezuelans is really hard to buy that much things abroad because all of the government's regulations on currency exchange, but I think with really good planning it is still doable... And congrats on your Webby Awards winning!
Hi!! Love your videos I watch them over and over so helpful! I can't seem to find out your electrical conversions video, I'm on a tablet and can't click if there's a link in the video! I'm traveling Thailand for 5 months I'm from the UK shall I buy a new charger for my phone? Or will the current be fine in Thailand? Xxx
As a pharmacy tech, I have a quick tip about taking prescription medication, mostly if you are from the US: request vacation refills ahead of time. Give the pharmacies, insurance, and doctor's at least a month in advance to work on these refills. Most insurances will only pay for certain amounts of medication monthly. If your insurance policy allows, they can do what they call a vacation refill, where they fill more than one months worth in advance, but these may need a doctors authorization and many days for them to allow a pharmacy to fill. If you are carrying temperature sensitive medication, call the manufacturers for travel information. Many medication manufacturers carry this information that may not be on websites. And don't just follow any website. The manufacturers will have the most recent information. You may also need manufacturer and doctor guidance if you cannot get a vacation refill done, and on how to go about getting medication in other countries or sending it to oneself. The last thing you want is expensive medication getting detained at customs for days when you send it to yourself. Get a doctor's letter explaining any medication you may be taking with you. Check country specific requirements and with TSA on all prescription medication. Some countries restrict the amount you can bring in, and some countries may require that you carry more than a doctor's letter, or even how you can carry it.
***Psst...go to a laundromat and get some of those single-use Tide (or whatever detergent you use) packs and some fabric softener sheets. They exist in Japan, but can be tricky to figure out, and you'll have enough to deal with in the first few weeks. Plus, they're lightweight and fit easily into any nooks and crannies you might have in the suitcase. *Take layers for winter. Schools and dorms are NOT heated for the most part. *Take/wear shoes you can comfortably walk in. Public transportation is great, but you'll be walking a LOT, and there's a lot of hills and stairs around. Also, if you've got bigger feet (and by bigger, I mean a women's 8 or higher), you'll have trouble finding shoes in your size in stores. *(if you're from the US) You don't really need a converter for appliances in Japan. The voltage is lower there, not higher, so something like your laptop would just charge slower rather than fry.
Waow, thanks for the advices, very helpful. I'm from Europe so I Don't know if the voltage stuff is a problem or not. Though I keep your tips in mind ^_^ arigato
You just maybe the coolest kickass girl i have ever come across!! n that kiss u blew away in the end...you are so dope..love you 💕..n ty for the tips..I will need it this year..

THANK YOU ! The what-if part really helped me because I'm going to a really hot place for about 3 weeks and I keep wondering if I should pack coats, so unrealistic. ((:
Hi Sonia! I was offered an amazing opportunity this summer to study abroad for a few weeks in France. I don't know any French, being this is a language school I would be attending, but still I am very excited (and hopeful that I can go)! Granted, France was not my first choice (no offense to anyone, please) I need some advice. The only reason I didn't choose France first, was because I wasn't originally signing up for a language school. I was originally going to sign up for a homestay in Ireland, New Zealand, UK, etc.--a English speaking country. I know a little bit of Spanish (2 years worth), but it has been awhile for me, and I know English (obviously) and Sign Language pretty well. I will be studying the language when I get there, but I am nervous for whoever my host family will be (if I get to do this opportunity). What I mean is, I was told they will speak both English and French, but French aren't always open it seems to speaking nothing more than their native tongue. How do you learn you're languages so fluently and quickly? Do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you for your time, and I hope this makes sense, and you can help me!
There are many apps you can use to learn French, my favourite two are Memrise and Hellotalk. Memrise is you pivking the French level you want to speak at your own pace and Hellotalk lets you talk to actual French people and make friends with them helping you in the French and you help in English, have a great time and i hope this helps :)
This video is a gift from heaven.... I was clueless what to do with my winter jacket, shoes and so on.. THANKS SONIA!
I have been studying in Germany for 2 months and have 3 more to go. Before coming I watched your videos and my list of things is almost like the one in this video.

This helps me sooo much to pack for a year! THANK YOU! but next problem is packing when you come back, HOW AM I GONNA PACK EVERYTHING I HAVE BOUGHT!!!
I love your videos! they're really useful, why don't you make more videos about studying abroad or traveling for a 9 months period!
Thank you so much, i'm going one year in japan, i'll take any advice from you
***Psst...go to a laundromat and get some of those single-use Tide (or whatever detergent you use) packs and some fabric softener sheets. They exist in Japan, but can be tricky to figure out, and you'll have enough to deal with in the first few weeks. *Take layers for winter. Schools and dorms are NOT heated for the most part.
