As a new blue belt I find myself getting tapped by both white belts and higher ranks which can be frustrating at times. The best sessions I have is where I go in without any expectations and just try to have fun. Great video again Will!
I needed to see this video. I have been training for 2 years and 5 months now and last month we had a graduation at my gym. I thought I was going to get my blue belt and when I didn’t it really crushed me! But that disappointment has made me work harder. Seeing this video made me realize that I enjoy being on the mat and all a belt does is keep my gi closed. At the end of the day earning a blue belt is not going to magically make me better. The most important thing is to enjoy the journey and be better than the day before.
Beautifully said, my friend. I’d rather be a tough white belt over a soft blue belt any day. Keep up the solid work. That mindset will help you see great success.

Good stuff. Im a four stripe blue belt and I stopped worrying about stripes and getting smashed by these younger people when I got my second stripe. Instead I'm there for the journey and knowing that other 57 year old women are not on the mat like I am and I feel great after every class. I am slowing down a bit so I have to start incorporating cardio and strength. Just another goal I have to add but all for the best. My son and I are out at Legacy Pasadena in Pasadena California. Keep the good stuff and realness coming. OSS

Well said ! I’m 55 years old ! I’m a 4th stripe white belt and I love where I am at! I’m never pushing to get promoted or my stripes like you said ! I’m still working on my fundamentals and learning my defensive goals etc! I have no problem tapping out because tapping like you said exposes your holes ! I always ask questions amd better ways to solve it! Well said on your previous vlog! I train 2-3 days and I have 212 hour jobs ! So, when I go I focus on bjj etc! It’s fun and very humbling ! Keep it up amd I’m looking forward to your next video
New sub here! Thank you for all your words of wisdom. I signed up in March and was nervous, insecure and scared to show up and felt like I was holding back the more experienced athletes from training. I’m female and 245 lbs. I stuck with Muay Thai at the academy so that I wouldn’t feel like I was wasting my membership. I have recently started to go to BJJ classes and am in love with the art. I do gas out quite quickly but love the community involvement because everyone including all the professors are beyond supportive and inclusive. I cannot do quite a few movements but have noticed improvements. I really do appreciate your videos and encouragement to continue on. Thank you again for your support!
You were the one of the big factors I started doing jiu jitsu it’s been 2 months and I’m enjoying it every single season well at the beginning I had one or two terrible weeks because as you said high expectations but now I’m getting better and the first terrible time I was so frustrated that I was thinking about quit but listened to you some other guys helped me to overcome so thanks for your advice you are doing a great job thank you brother
I love this mental side of the game, and Will you explain it so well. There is a 100% parallel in - of all things - golf. The top performers in golf are paid to do it, they do it all the time, and they have unreal talent. But even so, what we see on TV isn't "real." Pros miss 5 foot putts more often than most people think. They miss greens, they three putt, they even double bogey from time to time. Pro golfers only bring their A-game to the course a few times a year at best, usually they are playing B or C game. Why would be compare ourselves to what little we see of top pros on tv, and set an expectation of ourselves based on that false reality? The difference is that these pros 1) expect that they won't have their A-game all the time and 2) have the mental toughness and control of their ego to keep grinding, in control, within the game that they brought that week, that day, or even that hole. And all of these lessons apply to daily life. At work, in personal life, otherwise.. having that toughness and self control, that stoic mindset, to accept what is reality both external and internal, to see the moment for what it is, and apply a reasoned best effort to solve the problem that's in front of you. This is the way.
Im new to jiujitsu and every train i get submitted around 50 times but somehow i love it. Yes, its frustrating but every roll i do i learn something new and thats why im on it . Good Video!
Great advice both for BJJ and life in general. Being really bad at something that challenges you, takes you to failure, breaks you at times sounds undesirable on the face of it, but this is a feature, not a bug, a valuable experience that BJJ usually provides in a good, healthy environment allowing this level of risk taking. "Doing your best with what you have and what you are given" - golden.
Solid advice as always. In the path to martial arts you have to remember it's not a stopping point when it gets hard.... you're just pressing pause until you adapt.🙏 Solid content Will.
i'm 34. been training 2 years. got my blue belt after 1.5 years. had no grappling or martial arts experience starting off. had no expectations going in. have had to raise the bar in every aspect of life to even tread water.... dont care what belt i get to, just want to see what it feels like to swim - lol.
Recently started my journey into jiu jitsu. I have being struggling with expectations and ego for a while without realising it. A massive thank you for helping me see that and focus on the here and now! God bless
Good stuff as always. At 55 i have learned over the past 2 years of consistent training to have realistic goals and expectations of what i can and cannot do. My main goals have been to enjoy the training, train hard but smart and make recovery an important component. I only compare myself to me. I think more people should do the same as this can keep one training and having fun for years to come.
Awesome content!!! I've had to learn this a few weeks ago among other things. I've learned to focus acquiring a skill set escapes and defense. Trying to get ahead start on offense but my main focus is on the defense. To me it's better to have skills rather than a belt. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences
Thank you for the video, not only is this solid advice for bjj but also for life, I try not to best myself up when things get difficult, but not always successful. White belt on the mats and in life as well, it's okay to fail
I have had this video on replay for two days now when I’m doing things: you have helped me understand that this is not implemented only in JJ, but in life. I have been training for a year now and felt like I hit a plateau coupled with things that are going on in my romantic and personal life, I feel like a train hit me and I don’t know how to react. Thank you for your guidance, set goals, not expectations
Good work Will! Been watching these for a while now and it’s helped heaps, been focusing on improving attributes. Got my blue last month, the grind is real but enjoying the journey. Keep ‘em coming please 🙏🏻
As a 38 yo family man with a FT job, I totally relate to everything you said in this video. One thing in particular, one week I get subs, the next I'm wrecked and gassed. Also the comment about expectations in your personal relationships.
Thanks Will! Recently started training BJJ. Going to save this video so I can watch it every few months to remind myself this is like a marathon not a sprint
I really enjoyed this video. This is a conceptual subject in martial arts that isn’t discussed frequently. You touched on some extremely deep philosophical concepts that could be analyzed for a lifetime without reaching full understanding. Thank you for making this video.
I train at Lineage BJJ, in California, MD. There are two sister gyms to this which are called Watershed and Calvert MMA. To my knowledge Lineage and Calvert are under Relson Gracie. Though I’ve never been to the sister gyms, I’ve been going consistently for nearly 5 months now and am a two stripe white belt. I taught myself how to hip hop dance so moves come quicker than most. I really think Lineage has been a great place for me to get to know good people and learn this fine art. I can’t wait to keep going. My goal is blue in under a year. Idc if I reach it, but I’m aiming for that.
Good stuff! I read somewhere that JT Torres started out just training twice a week while working at McDonald's due to life demands! I have been a consistent twice a week guy (nothing like Torres other than that!) and have found it useful to be mindful and present with the limited mat time I have. There are guys who have started after me and passed me up but that's their journey. I am better than I was the before I started training and significantly better than the folks who quit or didn't even try!
You’re setting a great example. I get asked alllll the time of 40 or 50 is too old to start. We have a 70 year old white belt and he’s doing great. Solid work, sir 💪🏼
Great video - I’m a white belt and look at blue belts wanting that belt sooo badly but deep down I know I’ve got a lot to learn and be patient with my rolling and hopefully 🙏 it will come I’m one a one stripe white belt atm
I love your content brother 💯! I just started BJJ two weeks and I love absolutely everything about it. If you’re ever in Atlanta I roll at Independent MMA & Fitness
Thanks for all the awesome advice! I'm a white belt 4 months in and attend Ascendant Martial Arts in Regina, SK. Our gym loves having seminars, you should reach out!
As a 46 year old 2 stripe white belt ...Im just enjoying the journey and process. Forget about belts and stripes ... I'm more focused on defense and positioning.
Thank you not only for the advice but the motivation I train At Black Samurai team Suriname Paramaribo in the building of First class boxing have a blessed and good Jui-Jitsu journey Friend #Never give up 💯🔥🔥🔥
@@willbrooksofficialthat's great. I started BJJ about 3 months ago now and enjoying it. Just taking it as it comes, learning along the way and enjoying the process.
Some people just need to accept that you may just be average at bjj, and thats okay . Just keep showing up to the gym and enjoy the process and remember that you do bjj because of the love you have for it.
Well i blew that. High expectations of myself to be good that i failed to reach goals. Received my blue at 57 . Again had a fight inside my head. Off and on. Recently just came back. Almost gave up. So small goals. Have fun number 1 and 2 work on my guard. What is my game. What type of guard should a 5 feet medium build play, with short legs. 😅 I'm happy to be back. High expectations of over thinking. Keep it simple. 💯. Thank Coach. Oh 60yr old = purple belt before 65.
@@reginaldanglin4264 lots of valuable lessons to be learned, my friend. I’m glad to hear that you’re finding that value along the way. If you have trouble with clothed guard, there are many different variations of open guard that could be really good for you. Keep up the great work!
What if you just suck? Like me. It doesn't matter what sport I try and no matter how much I show up to practice I still see zero improvement. 3months in and I'm getting destroyed by people for are like 3 weeks in. Im not confident in my submissions. Everyone in my gym has size and weight advantage. Im only 5'4 and everybody else is like 5'10 or more. No matter what sport I try I always been terrible. Football, soccer, swim team, wrestling team, baseball and skateboarding. Was always completely trash. Doing Jui jitsu is extremely fun but damn I'm just terrible. Are some people just not built for BJJ or sports in general? It's very frustrating for me to be passionate about sports but just completely garbage at every sport I try. I'm gonna continue to practice and practice hopefully in like 5 more months I can eventually win one match .. I don't need to be a state champ or anything special but I would like to get one win in my life. Idk why I'm so terrible and not a fast learning as everyone. It's embarrassing and frustrating. I feel like I disappoint my coaches because I'm not learning as quickly.
@@ZacharyFabbian I understand but to be honest, you’re supposed suck after only 3 months of training. It doesn’t matter how bad you are because if you keep going, you will improve. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You may be a slower learner, but some of the toughest guys I’ve faced have been slow learners with years of experience. Don’t let it deter you. Just keep going and eventually you will improve.
I know ppl wont believe me but as a WB I gave up on chasing the belt and stripes and jus have fun. I figured the more I am on the mats working and getting better the belts will come
Great advice sir. Just got my first stripe on my white, turned a shitty day into the best day into a long time. Everything you said was true! Oh and I train in Tucson AZ at Undisputed, whole lot of really cool guys, great atmosphere. Come by for some muay thai and some bjj rolls, would be an honor to chat and get tapped out by you lmao
Congratulations on your first stripe! That’s a big deal! There are so many rewarding moments in bjj and you’re getting to experience that. Well done. If I’m ever in the area, I’ll definitely stop by for some good training. Thanks brother 🙏🏻
im starting BJJ at 43. I accept that im old, fat and not flexible. I dont ever want my blue belt. I dont want the pressure of getting there, or the pressure of having it. I know I only have a little while before I have a career ending injury. all I want is to learn and lose less. I finally went an entire class without getting submitted. Honestly, that made me feel great. I feel like i have a year to go before i get a sub.
Six months in i just rolled my first no gi. Wtf? In the sweat and nothing to grab on to? Brutal but something tells me the sooner one starts NG the better you’ll be in Gi. Vancouver but soon to be on the road stopping at various gyms enroute to Texas 🌱
I’ve accepted that I am pretty useless at Bjj, been trying to figure it out for awhile now. White belt no stripes, likely will stay that way. Doing it for the fitness now and likely looking at quitting this year. Had my moments of enjoying it though and some of the people are good.
Always give yourself another month. You had a bad month? Give it one more before you quit. You had a month filled with confusion? Give it one more month before you quit. Even if you are a slow learner, with time you will grow. Don’t look at the results you aren’t getting right now. Think of the results that you will get in the future. Trust me on this. We all go through it at different paces. Stay the course and don’t quit.
Just feels that when I finally start to get some progress I get shut down by colour belts who don’t give me an inch and practice the moves in the fundamentals class. Then with other white belts they’re either so much stronger and fitter that they muscle out of everything and the whole round is me just trying to survive.
Thanks will, I was very close to quitting this morning and calling into my academy. But I’ve been looking around and I think I need to go elsewhere that offers more basic classes.
@@benjamindelfs2718 you’re very welcome. Nothing wrong with finding something that better caters to you. If you stick with bjj, I’m certain it will reward you greatly in time. Keep up the good work.

I havent even trained a year and people are talking about me getting my blue belt soon, I must be the only person who has done bjj that is dreading getting their blue belt so soon 😅
Haha I get it. I’ve felt that way about my brown belt 😂 I think it’s good that you feel that way tho. Better than bugging your coach to give you a blue belt lol
I know a BJJ white belt whose skill set level is that of a high level purple belt. Reason why he isn't purple or brown ? He meets with insecure instructors who are afraid to belt people, period. One of the most unlucky students I know.

Amazing, thank you for your encouragement and advise.

Thanks for all the awesome advice! I'm a white belt 4 months in and attend Ascendant Martial Arts in Regina, SK. Our gym loves having seminars, you should reach out!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you’re enjoying it. If I’m ever out that way, I’ll definitely reach out. Thank you!
As a 46 year old 2 stripe white belt ...Im just enjoying the journey and process. Forget about belts and stripes ... I'm more focused on defense and positioning.
Wisely said!
So well said! Thank you.

@@willbrooksofficialthat's great. I started BJJ about 3 months ago now and enjoying it. Just taking it as it comes, learning along the way and enjoying the process.
@@Steven-bp7ow you’re on the right path 🤙🏼
Some people just need to accept that you may just be average at bjj, and thats okay .
Just keep showing up to the gym and enjoy the process and remember that you do bjj because of the love you have for it.
Totally agree. Learn to have fun with it and it won’t matter what your skill level is. Well said
Great advice
Glad you liked it, Mike. I have more in the way 🤙🏼
Well i blew that.

Excellent video, even though I'll never get a belt cus I only can train no Gi,the message is the same,Thanks 🤙
I appreciate it, brother. The feedback means a lot 🤙🏼
All I caught was the heel hook in the gi 😂 & that cross ashi entrance lol sick vid man.
Hahahaha I was waiting for someone to point out that gi heel hook 😂😂 thanks man 🤙🏼
Well said thank you bro!

Love this channel ❤.
You just made my day with that 🤙🏼
Good video and great concepts. The tiny punching bag 😂
Thanks man! Hahahaha I couldn’t help it 😂
I know ppl wont believe me but as a WB I gave up on chasing the belt and stripes and jus have fun. I figured the more I am on the mats working and getting better the belts will come
@@stevecruz779 love that. Acquire the skills and the belts will come.
All facts brother 🤙🏼
Thanks bro 🤙🏼You know how to it
Great advice sir.
Keep up the good work! That’s solid progress right there 👍🏼
I’ve done two entire lessons and still don’t have my blue belt 😭
Haha it’ll take some time
Six months in i just rolled my first no gi. Wtf? In the sweat and nothing to grab on to? Brutal but something tells me the sooner one starts NG the better you’ll be in Gi. Vancouver but soon to be on the road stopping at various gyms enroute to Texas 🌱
Love that. Yea, nogi will definitely help improve you overall. Enjoy the journey and safe travels 🤙🏼🌱
@@benjamindelfs2718 don’t worry. This is more common than you think. Keep going and you’ll grow past it 🤙🏼
Thanks will, I was very close to quitting this morning and calling into my academy.

I’m a 4 tip white belt. 51yrs old. Training 1.5 years. I’m obsessed w Wristlocks. Should I feel guilty? It’s not the only thing I do but it’s what I enjoy. When I get caught w Wristlock, I laugh like a sadistic pOS.. I’ve been in wristlocking frenzies w classroom sickos. Is this wrong??
Nah, it’s not wrong. Wrist locks work. Just don’t go crazy hard on them haha. I say enjoy the wrist lock 🤙🏼🤝

Don't just eat plants
Don’t be offended. Wasn’t meant to trigger anyone 🤙🏼
I know a BJJ white belt whose skill set level is that of a high level purple belt. Reason why he isn't purple or brown ? He meets with insecure instructors who are afraid to belt people, period. One of the most unlucky students I know.
Very sad. Sounds like he needs a new gym
