  • Three incredible hikes to do in Kauai Hawaii. None involve a permit, all are public and free. The first trail is the Moalepe \ Kuilau trail (easy). It's a hike through a forest with an arboretum, and jungle and has spectacular mountain and valley views.

The second trail is the mahaulepu heritage trail (moderate). It follows the south shore along cliffs and beaches and is perfect for whale watching in the winter.

The third trail is the makaleha falls trail hard). This trail is more of a jungle crawl, that passes through a bamboo forest, criss crosses kapaa stream, has an emerald green plunge pool and finishes at a waterfall to swim under. All are amazing hikes and the first two are family friendly. The last trail is a true Hawaiian adventure, suitable only for the more hardcore hikers and adventurers.

The first trail is near Poipu on the south shore. The last two are on the East side of Kauai near Kapa'a, Wailua and Lihue. For an easy walk, the first hiking trail is best. For a more moderate but still easy hike the second trail is perfect ,with an added bonus of being in a perfect whale watching area. The last hike is a monster sure to satisfy anyone looking for a challenge with an added bonus of having wild fruit to pick along the way.

Good morning DS&T! Thank you for the great video! I used to hike Mahaulepu every morning after working out. The Labyrinth at 5.20 was a shrine to a gentleman’s wife, it was her favorite place, sadly The stone has gone missing in recent years…. I would always stop and say Hi to her and leave a shell or sea glass as I went by. Mele Kalikimaka!

Thank you very much! Some painfully obvious things about making videos occurred to me lately. Now I'm trying to be less of a caveman just crashing around with a camera ha!

Great video footage of these really amazing places.
Your explanations are precise and to the point, I enjoyed your adventure videos.
I’ll be visiting Kauai this coming September and these hikes fit right in with me.
    Thanks again.

DS&T - I haven't seen any posts from you recently - glad to have you back. Think you might ever remake the bicycle video you created but had tire (chain?) issues? Really curious about where you would have ended up on that ride. Mahalo for the videos!

Alas my Kauai adventure posts have been replaced with Utah adventure. I was very sad to move off island but there's a ton of great stuff to do around here that rival Kauai, so at least there's that. Double bummer was I didn't have a camera with me when I hiked the road I mountain biked down. And the end of the road is truly spectacular. Perhaps I'll get back on island one day to finish that adventure on a bike.

Personally I like Kauai more overall, I like the small feeling off the island and the vast rainforests are amazing
