Hong Kong 4K - Morning Drive - Protests Aftermath

- Saturday morning drive in Hong Kong to check out the protest aftermath. I could hear the protesters from my hotel as I was checking late Friday night. So I woke up around sunrise to see what was left. I was surprised by the aftermath. Broken storefront glass (Starbucks, banks, etc), trash, graffiti, remains of roadblocks, etc. Pretty intense gatherings once the sun goes down. Very different from the Paris protests late last year.
Fun facts about Hong Kong: Hong Kong hosts the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals of any city in the world. Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, there is severe income inequality. The city has the largest number of skyscrapers of any city in the world and its residents have some of the longest life expectancies in the world. Over 90% of its population uses public transportation.
Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (HKSAR), is a special administrative region on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China. With over 7.4 million people of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after Qing China ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War, and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. The territory was transferred to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of "one country, two systems".
Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages, the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centres and commercial ports. It is the world's tenth-largest exporter and ninth-largest importer, and its legal tender (the Hong Kong dollar) is the world's 13th-most traded currency.
Hong Kong is a highly developed territory, ranking seventh on the UN Human Development Index. Air pollution has resulted in a high level of atmospheric particulates in the city.

Big mood

I went to Hong Kong in 2018, very nice city. Love Hong Kong, from Cambodia
are you a google map driver? haha
That's a good question!
Trust fund baby?
hahaha
You can see the back of the Hong Kong demonstration on the street,
I think this is also a true look at the travel destination.
Thank you for showing me a vivid image of Hong Kong.
Appreciate your high quality video. I think the world should understand what the government has done to the people in the first place. There were numerous peaceful protests but the government turned a deaf ear.
Look what your peaceful rioters did to your own city.
23:53 I really like that white accented building in the background. Looks so futuristic.
that is a university
Yes. The Uni was, is and will be great look and a great place. :-)
Designed by Zaha Hadid
Wow, except China's national companies or triads owned shops, no other local shops are vandalized, amazing
amazing???
I'm glad at least some of the traffic lights are still functional
@Yvonne Cheung bro are you there? I hope you're ok
Seem most Hong Kong city not affected but due public transportation affected so few people can go anywhere.
The traffic is more efficient and safe without functional lights, every one act their responsibility
I like how everyone saying people drive more responsibly but literally just on Wednesday some guy died due to no traffic lights.
Hi J Utah, what camera are you using? The video looks crisp and stable. Sound is great, too. Love your videos
So this video took in the early morning? 6am? Of course No shops open in the early morning 😂
A lot of this still looks clean and peaceful, just like the Hong Kong I grew up in.. (2001 - 2017)
Honestly I don’t see what’s wrong with this. This is what Hong Kong looks like everyday in the early hours before 7:30am. And it feels so refreshing to be able to enjoy the city without the hustle and bustle.
You mean the trash on road thing as well ?
despite the mess I still think it's beautiful, hong kong has such a unique character to it
yes, it's uniqueness is not able to be replaced and "copied" by any China cities. So this is why Hongkongers struggle to protect it.
agreed. We were playing this game where our friend shows us a video from this channel and we have to guess which city it is. We were able to guess Hong Kong in under 6 seconds.
So sad to see all this...
This is so cool thanks for posting.
This has transcended after-work chillout channel to become journalism
Came here to say this. Holy shit, this channel's gone next-level.
what time was this on Saturday morning? seems really early since you passed by Tsim Sha Tsui / Nathan Road and there were no shops open and few people around.
I live in hong kong for 12 years. Everyday, I can feel the magic moment of hong kong. And I also learn to record hong kong by dji pocket 2.
The last time I went to HK is when I was 3 . This is not the HK I remembered.
Please give me the Hong Kong I remembered
Ivan Ho I am bloody surprised you remember so well at the age of 3
Yep the first time I went overseas with my mom and dad to Disneyland
As long as China doesn't change HK you'll get it back
Wich year? I before 1997? if yes HongKong Still Under British rule 😁
One very sad fact:
The world is less interested in Hong Kong than most most Hong Kong people thought.
Hope the Taiwanese and the rest of the world can learn something from what happened in Hong Kong after the British betrayed them 20 years ago.
what makes that a fact? It's just self-appointed opinion!
Seriously
The British gave Hong Kong back to China where it belongs BY RIGHT
@@louischau7982 There are two Chinas and Hong Kongers should have been given the vote to either join the ROC, PRC or be independent like other former British colonies. As far as history teaches us, the CCP and its army have never actually taken control of HK before 1997, so it does not belong to China by right.
Damn...its like a city in tv series "the walking dead" 🤭
they are more active when it is dark.
I also love walking dead, especially the scene when millions of zombie walking on the city street, which really frightened me.
Lol so true
Should be able to shoot a movie. HAHAHA
@@amaterasu_neko999 It's China who made your shitty city be one of the richest places in the world. So be respectful or just get out of chinese land such as Hong Kong.
Whampoa, i study there lol
there are some broken traffic lights that few weeks on Nathod Road near Jordon, did you go there? Somehow I feel the bus I took was faster in that section :p
looks like it's very early in the morning.
Stand with Hong Kong, fight for freedom and democracy!
From mainland China,Anhui Province
Have been to Hong Kong many times, I found the video depressing. It's more like a war zone rather than a modern metropolitan.
true
its very depressing to be here and see this but this is hk now
Why would a tourist want to go there? depressing..
This video was shot on a Saturday morning around 6:00am. Therefore it's normal to have all the shops closed & few people on the streets.
This video only shows 3 districts of the Kowloon side: Hunghom, ToKwaWan & a small part of TsimShaTsui.
I've lived in Hunghom & ToKwaWan. Quiet morning street scene remains the same as before protests have started. A slight difference is the white flyers on the road. Everything looks the same. No traffic lights is damaged. So, this is no aftermath but click-bait title.
Probably the youtuber stayed in a hotel in Hunghom, the video started from Hunghom Whampoo garden, via ToKwaWan to South TsinShaTsui, to west TsinShaTsui and ended suddenly.
He had missed all the big protest locations.
He should stay in hotels along the Nathan Road of Kowloon side or Hennessy Road of Hong Kong island (Use the google map). Many tourists have witnessed the protests & aftermath with their own eyes, but without getting hurt.

You should go film in Israel, that would be very interesting.. thank you for your videos ,you are doing an amazing work
It make perfect sense if it’s 6-7 am lol, every city looks empty in this time
Not in malaysia, 6-8 will be so jammed in this hour
Cs K You never been to Manhattan, Chicago, LA, Vegas, or any major city lmao
It’s so strange how Hong Kong’s road are still heavily influenced by the British
The law still sets the road marking to British even though they are in China now.
It was not influenced, they were built by the British, it was colony for over 150 years.
Because the road style, regulations and "standard", e.g. road surface markings, have not changed even it has handover to China, and due to One country two system, they are not needed to be changed.
Thatd be a hassle to change an already working existing system
Built by the Brits. They didn’t have any roads before they came. Hong Kong was merely a fishing village with lots of hills
"I am the legend"
At which hotel did you stay and what was the room rate?
How about Finland ? that would be interesting.
When will this 'beautiful sight to behold" happen in the USA?
it takes like 10 min to drive around the biggest city :D
Actually it is in the morning about 6:00
Still a better country than the Philippines lmao
If you hae ever read the video description, you would know how to define Hong Kong. Hong Kong is not called a "country".
@@qikaigao3991 it will be independent
Yeah but philippines is a country with multiple cities and Hong Kong is one mega city
Redentor gabriel ulsano this is a civilized world and we speak laws. I believe it will never legally happen
I won't argue with you. At present, HKU has arguably the best medical school in Asia. In 1960s, it was University of Rangoon.

Libya poor country now.
Their peoples regret for being demoncrazy country.
I doubt HK protesters are convinced that USA is for true democracy in other countries. They are just trying to play towards their own favours in this geopolitical game between Washington and Beijing. For the most of them, the ever growing shadow of CCP presents a much more imminent threats to their ways of life than USA does. I guess USA is just the lesser evil of the two in their context. For the extremists among them, they have nothing more to loose. For the Washington, it is a golden chance for them to exploit to curb PRC’s expanding regional influence especially amidst the height of a trade war. For CCP, they just assume people would get tired of the destruction caused by a small band of extremists who have abandoned peaceful protests. After that, I guess the CCP is planning to make a little concessions to reach a temporary truce with the majority of the HK society, such as the rumoured plan to replace Carrie Lam with an interim chief executive.
Xi and his allies are probably now busy forming a contingency to stop the resurgence of his enemies’ cliches within CCP. In fact, political infighting within CCP might be an important factor that has ignited and escalated this whole crisis. Many evidences have shown that Xi did not order Carrie Lam to push through the now withdrawn extradition bill. It could be a coincidence this bill just happen to elicit strong enough emotions to get 2 million people to the streets. Or, could this bill be slipped in Lam’s portfolio by Xi’s political rivals within the CCP to cause enough trouble for him? I could not tell. Still, I just don’t see the logic behind the argument that it is Xi who tried to push through this legislative bill.
Another awesome video
Incredible my friend..
This is history!!!
Yes indeed. History of Hong Kong people and how they've betrayed themselves
u mean DOOMED .
On the screen viewing not like what I am understand past year city.
I didn't know countries had better streets and roads than USA and Europe. That's amazing.
Never thought HK would look like a warzone
This is not the warzone area, not aftermath afterall.
This video only showed 3 districts, HungHom, ToKwaWan & a small part of TsimShaTsui, in the Kowloon side.
The massive major protests everybody watched on global news were NOT happened in the streets shown in this video. With a careless mistake, the youtuber had missed the real spots. Blame it to the taxi driver who gave wrong info. Just another click-bait title.
This video was probably shot in the morning around 6:00am, hence all the shops were closed.
I know because I'm living in HK.
Well what a lovely morning drive enjoyed much thnx to assist me in looking all this one
They will put this look into zombie game.
“Divide et impera was an old Roman maxim, and it shall be ours”, wrote Lord Elphinstone.
Sad to see that Hong Kong got into a wreck. Still looks beautiful though.
16:42 I remember I've stayed at that hotel on the left in 2017, it's crazy to think that 2 years later, ~500m away would become a semi-war zone
good report
it looks like early morning
that’s because it is lol
Love Hongkong from S.K
This is the face of real democracy,at first look you think it's dead city. But it will become more economic power than before in next year 2020. A very beautiful sight of real democracy.
your video is very nice!! by taxi or your car?
The protest is more than just a couple of people. The government needs to talk to the people and work out peaceful solutions.
No one truly cares about the ppl
The protesters themsleves need to calm the f down first before "peaceful solutions'
The biggest problem is the Hong Kong government is a puppet state of Beijing China Central Government. The protest now turn into a revolution for the complete downfall of the Chinese Communist Dictatorship government. There is no talk under dictatorship base rule.
Is this really early morning? What time?
98% of this video looks like a regular Sunday morning in Hong Kong. The other 2% has some extra bit of litter scattered around.
Which camera do you use ?
Are you riding in a car or just driving around for fun?
So peaceful. No wonder they call them "peaceful protestors" .
0:36 Lamborghini Urus YUHHHHHHHHHHH!

are the protests over?
Next: battle of Idlib in 4k plz :D
It looks such a mess that it looks even worse than what downtown Manhattan was like on 9/11/2001.
Next season's Walking dead can be taken directly from Hong Kong
I was in HK two weeks ago, and I didn't notice the protests at all during my stay
Before and after might be helpful though I can see clear signs.
Great, good job. I would like to see what is going to be a happy ending.
Oh my God! Hong Kong looks like a war aftermath
TBH, this is actually the fine art project on a large scale done by "educated" fine art artists. It requires people to not DARE to walk on the streets. Its about emptiness and loneliness!

@@jasmithyantro9680 yeah I was about to say the same thing. some cities there have been reduced to rubble. HK just needs to take some time to repair and clean up after they resolve their issues.
So much damages and the town is desserted! 😢
That is because it is early in the morning. Hong Kong still has 7.3 million people.
It’s convenient to see and blame the damage on the surface but not the causes behind.
@@peter238 when you say still..im-😣
Nah, it's just super early in the morning. Nobody likes getting up at zero-dark-stupid.
If you really think about it the only damage I see is the broken barriers and that there’s paper everywhere. Plus it looks to be really early morning so it looks deserted.
thats not much damage, LOL it's only paper and temporary rock bock for maintenance being moved out. And it's 6am in the morning, that's why not much people walking around. Hongkongers are pretty used to that, even there are wars in university between protesters and police, even there are rally in CBD, even protest are in 8/18 districts in HK, people still go out for work:)
Notice the good weather now in HongKong? Good time to visit. Don't let the protest stop you from going to HongKong! There are 2 sides to every story.
There is only one side, they are rioters not peaceful protesters

The Extradition bill was removed from consideration. At least for now. Not a fan of the destruction of property, but to be fair, it worked.
