- For my birthday this year, I treated myself to a bikepacking trip through the top of the South Island of New Zealand. I will be exploring the legendary Rainbow Road and the Molesworth Station, while also sharing the highs and lows of bikepacking with my friend Cassandra.

Another awesome vid bro! Looking forward to more content 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks so much for the support
In a Surly! Sick!
Surly Gang!
Dude, great video! Looked like some amazing views despite the crappy weather.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this awesome video! I found it really nice that you randomly were put on my RUclips page and the bike ride seemed pretty intense but you did very well! I just got back from a one day e-bike trip and this even exhausted me 😮
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would love to try this one day, just need to work up the courage to do it solo. Lovely video, thank you 😊
Thanks for checking it! You can do it! Go for it!
Awesome video! Type 2 fun though 😅
type 3 fun maybe 🤠 I remember exactly how unpleasantly and surprisingly hilly that section after Molesworth camp to Blenheim is 😅 great video!
Type 3 is similar to type 2 fun in the way that when it’s happening it doesn’t feel good at all. But unlike type 2 fun in the future, instead of laughing about it, it never become funny or a good memory and always sucks.
NZ is a very hard place to go bikepacking. Good on ya mate!
? why is that?
Hey Dude, fellow kiwi from wellington and I'm just getting into bikepacking on my hardtail. Got any tips for starting out? Great video by the way, loved how you documented the journey!
I’m gonna start working on a couple of packing videos, and gear related stuff in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime one of the easiest trails for people with not too much gear is the old ghost road. You can hire a sleeping bag for the trip. And use all of their cooking facilities. So you wouldn’t need to invest in too many bags. All you need is to be able to carry food water and layers. And also pedal up 2700 meters of gain lol. What’s your MTB experiment like there in Welly?
What bike are you riding? Are you doing a video on the bike, bags and gear you took on the trip?
In this video, I was riding a Surly Midnight Special, that's the same bike I took with me on the GDMBR that I just finished, I have a ton of editing I'm still working on from the GDMBR. Once I finish that I intend to do a video about my bike and bags, then everything I generally take with me bike packing.
You didn't ride Taylor Pass? So much nicer than State Highway 1...
I took Taylor pass, but then the highway east of Blenheim.
I hope Cassandra had some cycling fitness under her belt at least before the trip. How far did you ride on the first day?
Yeah, she is a full time cycle commuter and does day trips of the bike for fun as well.
Was Blairich your bail out campsite I wonder?
Hey Murph,
I'm trying to plan a route for January 2024. Your trip was recent? What do you think about weather / rain in January?
Thanks
This trip was in early April. So basically into the rainy season, January it should be nice and warm, less rain and much more daylight.
Hey I am planning a bikepacking route from Queenstown to Nelson and was curious which route did you find easier or prefer Molesworth or Rainbow road?
Rainbow road I think would be easier overall and more direct. Couple of nice huts in there too. And the road riding that you would have left is pretty ok.
What season was this again. Sorry if you said it on the video. I missed it… also, any gluten free food available on the NZ roads at all?
It was the fall. There should be plenty of gluten free options for you
Our last moment of the trip

so you rode for 5 days and how many kilometres all up ?
A little over 500km total
What’s your bike?
Surly midnight special
@@MoveWithMurph fun little video. That’s a nice bike, just got myself a karate monkey so if joined the surly family.
Welcome to the family, enjoy!
Murph, just a tip: When you cycle with a partner, don't sprint ahead and leave her behind all the time. Don't pay her out with sarcasm when she's feeling exhausted. Ride together. Set the pace according to the slowest rider. Be a little more encouraging. Don't leave her to struggle 25km to Hamner Springs on her own. Go to Hamner with her. Then continue on, once you know she is safely at her destination. Share the experience. You will get more out of it yourself by being a better person.
I appreciate the advice, but the plan from the start was she would ride solo to Hanmer, soak in the hot springs, and catch a ride back to Nelson. She has safely navigated multiple solo 25km + bike rides previous to this trip.
After seeing how far she has already ridden in the past two days, I cannot think of a single reason she wouldn’t be able to ride anther 25 km…..
@@MoveWithMurph My point was, it is more fun, and more satisfying, for you personally to make sure the whole adventure is a good experience for you both. It is a different way of thinking.
If I could go back and do it again I probably woulda split that first day into 1.5 days instead of one, for both of our sanity. But like I said, she’s a tough lady, she had fun anyways.
I get your point, being a Shepard of the outdoors is a delicate thing. I don’t want to turn someone off from getting outside and having fun. I have been friends with her for years. Although she has never done a multi day bike trip before. She’s done multi day backpacking before and lots of hiking and trail running. So needless to say this is not her first encounter with type 2 fun. She’s been challenging herself, alone and in groups in the outdoors for years. I trust that if she was truly uncomfortable she would have communicated that to me.
Her main goal here was to experience some new areas of New Zealand, learn about packing a bike, challenge herself, and have fun.
When I got back to town and we chuckled about the struggles of the previous week, I think it’s safe to say she accomplished all of those goals. All that adds up to a pretty fantastic trip in my opinion.
@@MoveWithMurph Yeah Murph, just a tip: Just be a better person!
Thanks Bruce…. for the vision that I’m unable to see until you pointed it out. I’m similar like Murph…. doing n thinking what we felt is ok when a partner has shown their capabilities. I’m lousy with dealing with ladies…. especially those who are like my male buddies. I basically treat them like a human of equal status.
I'm not an expert at all but it doesn't look like you fit on your bike properly.
Did you think too small or too large?
