I would love to see more facilities like this. I like the conservation aspect of what they are doing. The fully mature fish that are too large to keep In captivity any longer, they release.
I am so thrilled that mahi mahi breed so easily in captivity. Mahi mahi is my favorite fish and I want to be able to grow my own on my property some day.
Guys, releasing farm raised Mahi Mahi into the wild will not increase the population of wild Mahi Mahi. However reducing commercial fishing pressure on Mahi Mahi, due to Mahi Mahi fish farms, will increase both the population and average size of Mahi Mahi in the wild.
Thank you sir for this education. Looks this pompano is gift of God to humankind. Moreover researchers like you can help guys like me understanding life cycle. Jussojuan
Thank you for the very engaging video and education. Hope this research facility continues...and perhaps to include some Tuna and Salmon in the future! 🐟 👍
As stated in the video, the females release an incredible amount of eggs. This is a high fecundity species. They have no problem repopulating in the wild.
Captain mike have you ever boated a blue marlin? Do you target them at all? Why is the blue marlin fishing so poor around the Miami area when it’s so good here off the SC coast where I live.
Yes, I've caught many, but only one locally off South Florida about 350 in 650 ft. Conditions are different, bottom terrain is different, more tuna up there (primary forage). - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing Lol you don’t marlin fish much do you. the term ‘boated’ or ‘landed’ in the blue marlin world means to kill and bring the fish aboard. Almost every marlin tournament has a ‘landed’ category. The 5 tournaments in SC the minimum size limit is 105 inches to kill in a tournament. And it usually pays well over $100,000 if you are the only team to boat a fish. Other than that yes always release
i had an idea like the video, but I was wondering if regular people can grow fish but not farm them but release them after certain size. For example mutton snapper if I were to farm them until they reach 12" then release them to the ocean that way there more in abundance just a thought.
I work with a company out of eustis fl called aquatic nutrition I would love to talk to you guys some more very interesting video I have so many questions
This fish is classified as "Least Concern" conservation status meaning this is one of the rare species that restock themselves faster than we can take them.
David Fray Cross breeding is almost definitely impossible considering how different these species are. The amount of time since mahi shared a common ancestor with snappers or cobia is probably tens of millions of years, so genetically they’d be very unlikely to be able to interbreed. They could possibly isolate the gene for fast growth found in mahi and insert that but there would need to be a lot of testing to see how that affects the development of snappers and cobia. I hope that someone’s working on that though!
The little bit of info was cool. But… just talk normal next time. No need to make it super slow , drag it out , make exaggerated expressions. We talk slow here in Tennessee as well. However , this video is almost cringe worthy due to the actions and awkwardness of your gestures. 👍🏻 other than that. It was definitely interesting and I learned a few things.
Florida Sport Fishing they better taste as good as the ones out in the ocean man cuz I support this!!! This right here is the smartest shit people could do
Any health benefits from fish could easily be found in a plant based diet. Fish is high in cholesterol, fish are sentient beings who feel pain, and the fishing industry kills one dolphin every minute. End this demand now, boycot animal exploitation!
This was an incredibly informative video. I never knew mahi were farmed like that
Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
Only at this facility, and it's not profitable.

Awesome video. I had no idea this was happening in south Florida!
Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
interesting how different the color of the Mahi kept in captivity is compared to in the wild.
They change colors, amazing fish. - Capt Mike
Excellent and informative! Great video.
Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
🐠 very interesting 🤨
Great video intro on mahi fish
Very beautiful, please can you guide me to have my own pond ?

I don't see a downside. - Capt Mike
Awesome to see thanks !
Thumbs up! - Capt Mike

Best farm
Amazing ..!!!!!!
Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
You’re most welcome ... we have learned so much from you guys ...!!!
Great insight, so interesting! 👍great video
Thank you. - Capt Mike
Thank you for the very engaging video and education. Hope this research facility continues...and perhaps to include some Tuna and Salmon in the future! 🐟 👍
They did blackfin tuna for a bit, but they're not easy to keep in tanks
So, they can't be farmed in fresh water?
Awesome! How about releasing bunch of them out in the nature?
As stated in the video, the females release an incredible amount of eggs. This is a high fecundity species. They have no problem repopulating in the wild.
Great video.

Florida Sport Fishing Awesome. Nothing like a blue marlin bite. Most explosive bite there is by far
Florida Sport Fishing What did you do with the marlin? Did you smoke it? Where you in a tournament
We release all marlin, regardless if there is a tournament or not. They are worth far more alive. Smoke kingfish. - Capt Mike

You have the resources to do that?
Florida Sport Fishing is it lawful? if it is I'll do it.
Please do update us on your adventure.
Could they use shrimpers bycatch to feed the fish?
Very good question.....dont think there is anywhere near enough of it though. - Capt Mike
I love to join with you,❤❤❤
Awesome. Wild fish alone simply can't keep up with the demand.
That is correct! - Capt Mike
We need more videos of this place . Do they have their own channel ?
UMiamRSMAS is their channel.
I work with a company out of eustis fl called aquatic nutrition I would love to talk to you guys some more very interesting video I have so many questions
A dolphin is a mammal and breathes air. A fish has gills. Mahi Mahi is a dolphinfish. Not a dolphin.
you should release more mahi into the wild and grow the population
This fish is classified as "Least Concern" conservation status meaning this is one of the rare species that restock themselves faster than we can take them.
we should cross breed mahi with red snapper or cobia or other species and pass that gene that allow them to grow fast.
David Fray Cross breeding is almost definitely impossible considering how different these species are. The amount of time since mahi shared a common ancestor with snappers or cobia is probably tens of millions of years, so genetically they’d be very unlikely to be able to interbreed. Interestingly, they are currently experimenting with crossbreeding grouper species. Its happening now. - Capt Mike
@@blakew.5736 tens of millions of years huh? Have any proof of that? 😂
@@cwill114 It was a guess. They’re very different fish and not closely related.

The answer for what
Start with tilefish the get over fished a lot
They live too deep, can't farm raise them. I asked. - Capt Mike

how about birth control for humans ?
Fish grown to die
Yup! - Capt Mike
