4 Days Winter Bushcraft Camping - Fatwood Light - Log Heated Hot Tent

  • Bushcraft and camping in cold weather. The Fatwood torches/lighters were in every home in the boreal forests for thousands of years. They cut the bark off the base of pine trees, waited 5 years and harvested the resin saturated wood. Cut it up in thousands of little sticks and lit up their everyday life in the darker months. In Falu Copper Mine 10 000 sticks where used every day. They where holding them in the mouth, therefore allowing the use of both hands, crawling into narrow places. They where also used in summer, at night or during night fishing. Each light burns about 10-20 minutes. As I have understod from reading what I could find, in Sweden, a stick burning for light was called "lysesticka" (light stick) and when tied in a bundle "Tjärbloss" (Tar Torch). I imagine the latter was specially used during night fishing. At a museum I saw a holder for the stick made out of metal, so in this video I do the wooden version. It all worked very good. Fatwood from pine burns with a very bright strong flame that lights up more than normal wood. I had about 7 sticks and they lasted all night lighting and putting them out, relighting them over and over. I did not use them in my mouth though, I guess house wives of old times were made of another material because I couldn't stand that nasty resin smoke in my eyes for more than 5 seconds ;).
The Log placed for burning in a closed tent like this is a Sami tradition from the north of Sweden. That is the only time when I use a fire in a stone circle like this (something I like to call Donald Duck Fires). Fires are to be made on rocks. Pointless outside a tent to make stone rings. But you see them everywhere I'm afraid. In Sami the fire place in a tent is called Arran. In this video I'm not doing it exactly according to the Sami tradition, as always its with a Swedwoods tweak.
That last fire I made out on the ice was magic. Every fire is unique. After all these years there it was. The perfect fire.
I'm using both steel and matches for fire in this video. I have a reason for doing everything and I do not care at all about internet trends and social media rules of engagements. Thank you so much for watching!
Merry Christmas to all my Subscribers!

The best tool is any tool that does the job and it’s there when you need it. Great stuff as always! Anything can break or get lost/forgotten at home, it’s always better to have alternatives.

Future archaeologists finding Swedewoods camps: They seem to have been a nomadic people, sleeping at many different primitive camps. How the 5-star cuisine was procured we haven’t figured out yet. 😂

I wish the entire planet smelled like fresh fatwood! It is almost intoxicating. And your right that was the perfect fire. With basic knowledge being in the wilderness is like writing music. Let your senses tell you what to do and before you know it you are proud of what you've done.

I love the beauty of winter, the biting cold (as long as I can get warm when needed), the different sounds the snow makes when you step or lay on it, and the taste of food cooked over a fire. Thank you for your video and letting me enjoy those things through you.

Was -17 C yesterday here in Småland.
SOmehow these cold winters remind me of the 90's when i was a kid. All day, everyday out playing. Skating in a hockeyrink we kids cared for ourselves. The memories.
Our of those childhood friends, i have lost 4 and had to end friendship with one. Life moves quickly.

Several video's back, year or so, I commented that you remind me of someone that isn't just a "bushcrafter", but rather, I believe you continue to be a student of your craft. That is made even more apparent from your entry above, talking about the history and tradition of the Sami, the copper mine, and the tradition of the fatwood lights and lanterns. You are an inspiration on numerous levels. With the new year fast approaching, I hope you and yours continue in good health, and long, happy trails. Roger

The action itself filmed in vid is rather simple, not been "patched up" by lots of "survival tips". And it is ok.
Most impressive thing to me was the magic lighting of near-midwinter night. Very good!

-16c = 3.2 degrees Fahrenheit for my fellow Americans out there. That’s a chilly one. The coldest night that I’ve been out camping in was around -14 degrees Fahrenheit. I kept my two 1.5L water bottles that were both in insulated sleeves in my -20F rated sleeping bag with me that night, and we all stayed very warm. That night I stayed in one of the many free to the public shelters on Vermont’s Long Trail, a 3 sided lean-to at Sterling Pond in the Stowe area of Vermont. It’s snowing like mad outside today, and watching a Swedewoods video makes me want to pack up and get out there!! - Jason/Freedom Fighter Until Death/Vermont, DSA (‘DSA’, meaning “The Divided States Of America”)

Swedwoods👍👍 Awesome! Interesting fact on the Arran fire. I can see in Sweden a rock ring is not needed account the abundant moisture but here in the states, if an open fire is allowed on federal lands and forest anyway, it has to be contained one way or another per regulations. Usually a rock ring is used to keep the fire from spreading/creeping to adjacent combustibles, we're much dryer here. I go camping etc. to have a good time not survive, so I make fire any way I can period and agreed on the naysayers.. Filming was award winning as usual, the drone shots are epic, well done. Fires and food was Swedwoods all the way, I'm warm and full. Thanks for the winter adventure, the snow and cold there makes up for the lack of it here in the desert southwest, I knew it was close to Christmas time... Enjoy!

    • @Swedwoods
      @Swedwoods  Год назад +2

Oh I know what dry is. My humus enriched soil around here is disaster waiting to happen. In summer this is also important. You can make a ring sure, but the important thing is not to let the fire creep down into the ground. So always fire ON rocks. Its essential not to have a ring elevating around the fire because: easier to ignite because of better airflow, it heats your body better and faster, it burns better with less smoke. Some awesome books out these days on the matter. And yes, we have all been doing it wrong!
