The Pömmelte Ring Shrine, also known as the Pömmelte-Zackmünde circular moat, is a fascinating prehistoric ritual site in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The complex is often referred to as the “German Stonehenge” and dates back to the end of the 3rd millennium BC. It was discovered in 1991 by aerial prospecting and later confirmed by geomagnetic surveys. The complex consists of several concentric circles, ditches and palisades, which were probably used for a variety of religious activities. Interestingly, the Pömmelte ring sanctuary is part of the "Sky Paths" tourist route, which leads to various archaeological sites in the region, including the site of the discovery of the famous Nebra Sky Disk. This bronze disc with gold applications is over 3,600 years old and shows the oldest known representation of cosmic phenomena. The Pömmelte Ring Shrine is open to the public all year round and offers regular public tours from April to October. It is a testament to the complex social and religious activities of our ancestors and offers insights into the early history of humanity. Visitors can wander the site and absorb the atmosphere of this ancient site while learning about the significance and functions of the various structures. The complex is not only a place of archeology and history, but also a space for education and culture that brings the past to life and stimulates reflection on humanity's long journey.
