For the fellow species frostbite can cause infection, depending on the severity, you can warm the area and apply antibiotic ointment to it and keep him comfortable for a few days that should help him bounce back. Stress can also cause roosters to become ill and succumb to death. My neighbour is an old farmer and what he used to do with his roosters if they are prone to frostbite is to keep the chickens and roosters area as dry and warm as possible, and if there was frostbite, he would warm up the cone slowly very slowly and put on Polysporin. It’s an antiseptic pain, relieving ointment and with Elvis being at your place and warm for a while, that would be the best time Also, he said to use straw as bedding as it does not retain moisture it’ll keep them warm and dry and insulated. Just an idea for you sending love and prayers to the entire farm.
Ok I’ll try polysporin we have that anyway. Maybe that’s what’s happening to him, since his comb has frostbite he’s stressing and his immune systems aren’t working right. Yes I’ll add some heat lamps as well when Elvis is ready to come back to his coop. The animals actually do very well in winter usually, Elvis is just having a hard time and that frostbitten comb is affecting his overall health.
Heat lamps are dangerous. But I use electric heaters inside metal dog cages. They turn off if overheated or they tip over. Work wonderful in my hen house and dog house and cat run. I have a set up for my nigerian dwarf goats in their barn also.
I think sushi needs to be out of that crate now, it’s such a long time for her to be in there and she needs to stretch her legs. Also she would appreciate a little heated house like the other cats have. I think once she is more comfortable she will open up to you more. 😊

I really enjoy your vlogs. Having lived all my life in Alhambra Southern California 🌴 snow never comes to us. I do wish we had some rain, it would help with the 🔥 we have had to endure....
Hay Chad. Maybe the rooster isnt getting enough grit. He looks hunched up. I also use a heater in the hen house to dry the moisture in the air in the winter. I understand moisture causes frostbite. So far its working for me. I use a heater in a dog cage that shuts off if it overheats or tips over. Up on a shelf.
Ive read that you can put petroleum jelly on a chicken's comb to prevent frost bite. Since Elvis is prone maybe you could do that after he heals to prevent it again.
@@jewelsoftime399 google it and you’ll see that it’s not a good idea in these cold temps. The Vaseline also becomes thick and cold and only makes things worse. I did this a few years ago and another issue was whenever he bent down to eat the feed would get stuck in the Vaseline. Then the hens started pecking the feed on his head. Anyways I don’t do it anymore.
15:41 Quick note, my chickens are molting this time of year. I noticed a lot of chicken keepers laughing over their chickens molting in winter, so I guess it's more common than you would think.
It doesn’t seem to affect them anyway so I guess it’s fine. Funny how it’s only a few of them. I was more worried about Elvis although he’s doing much better now.
Hey chad! Recycling suggestion. Throw your ash into the compost pile. Lotsa nitrogen in ashes and is easier for plants to absorb since the ashes is so fine. Blends in nicely with the soil.
12 days in the cage for a cat is a long time. He needs to be out move around & be active otherwise he gets depressed. He needs to jump around and strache his legs otherwise his joints get stiff😏I like your videos and love your dog. He is adorable 🐶❤
Please give Sushi a warm shelter or box. She looks like she's freezing❤love all your animals❤❤❤❤they do need extra food to build fat and thick straw for the birds to keep warm, If there kept in harsh cold.
It’s just nature really. The birds have feathers, pigs have blubber, Olive & the rabbits are double coated, and the cats gain weight and a winter coat. It’s amazing actually.
🇦🇺Hi from Queensland Australia. It’s almost 11pm on Monday 20th. It’s 21C at the moment but 82% humidity. On wed the high will be 35C and Friday 36C. Not nice.
Chad I think the reason that Elvis is not faring as well as the others is that the Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock breeds are considered cold hardy. Whereas the Leghorns are a heat tolerant breed. Once it gets below zero (-17C) Leghorns tend to not do so well. So, it could be that his body just couldn't keep up with the calorie requirement to keep him warm. Especially since he seems prone to frostbite. Depending on the wind direction etc it may be a little bit warmer in the white Leghorn enclosure versus the black. Glad to see you put a heat lamp just in their enclosure. I really think that will help.
While that all may be true this is the first year I’ve seen him almost dying. He’s had a bit of frostbite every year but this year it’s affecting him too much…maybe cause he’s 4 years old now too. And why hurt him? Why not any of the leghorn hens? Anyways he’s doing much better in the house but pooping every 20 mins 😂
I just saw a video of a girl who has chickens, and she commented about lice in chickens. I think that's what Elvy Presley has. Lice eat the crests of chickens because they suck blood. You should find a remedy to put in the chicken coop, if one has it, the others will too.
It's really not lice. It is easy to determine if your chickens have lice and are usually found at the base of the feathers on the skin. Elvis has had this frost bite every year since he was a chick but for some reason this year it's affecting him more, maybe cause he's getting older. He's doing much better in the house though so I'll keep everyone updated on his condition as we go.
I tried it a few years ago and it didn’t work, every time he bent his head down to get some feed the comb and wattle touched the feed and stuck to the Vaseline then the hens were pecking at it so I stopped doing it.
Love seeing Olive run in the snow! Chad hope you are keeping warm. Poor Elvis hope he feels better. It’s so cold 🥶 We finally got our freezing weather but it won’t last. I shouldn’t complain 😅 we may see a dusting of snow tonight into tomorrow.❄️ sushi looks beautiful. Wow she’s eating from your hand! Won’t be long before she is friends with all the other cats. Love all the animals ❤😊 Sorry this was suppose to be a comment. Not sure how it ended up in a reply. Ugh still learning this yt. Did not want to delete and start over 😂
Any way you can put a bed in Sushi's crate & the heated pad inside it....she seems pretty cold? I had 6 cats here on my farm in Indiana & they came in every night when I called them. Heated my single car garage for them in the winter. Some lived into their 20's!
She seems cold? Not sure you can tell that from watching a few clips, her behaviour wasn’t all curled up, shivering or whining or nothing. As you can see all the other cats are out and around the cat house not just staying on the heaters. I think Sushi has a thick coat and a bunch of extra weight so she’s fine. If noticed something was wrong I would act. You’ll see her out of the crate this Thursday.
Yes it happens to him every year but this time he was acting way different and I felt if I left him he wouldn’t make it. Once I put him in the heat he started to move around and eat.
@@HiddenSpringFarm I had to bring in 2 roosters last year becouse of the cold, so far this year they are doing good. But ya the ones that like to get there faces in the water or snow are the worst.

@@HiddenSpringFarmthat's awesome, so does our Samoyed. He's spoiled as well.
Feeding Sushi tuna cracks me up!!
The irony 😂
So happy you were able to help Elvis, hopefully he will make a full recovery.
He’s doing better in the house for now.
@@HiddenSpringFarm OK. Guess I didn't do enough research on it. Thanks for letting me know before I did it to my roosters.
That frostbite must be painful for Elvis. I'd keep him somewhere warm, maybe inside the protected part of the chicken coop, if not in your house.
We’ll keep him in the house as long as we can, only trouble is we had those 7 baby chicks hatch so it’s a poopy zoo in here 😂
Olive, your loyal, steadfast companion.
@@denisegilmore88 definitely 💯
15:41 Quick note, my chickens are molting this time of year. I noticed a lot of chicken keepers laughing over their chickens molting in winter, so I guess it's more common than you would think.
It doesn’t seem to affect them anyway so I guess it’s fine. Funny how it’s only a few of them. I was more worried about Elvis although he’s doing much better now.
@@HiddenSpringFarm oh that's good to here. Praying for Elvis. ❤
Beautiful place, good thing we have snow to shovel to keep us busy in the winter eh. Lol🙄
I’m ok with it for a while but now I need spring 😆
Oh, that Sushi is a riot :)
Hey chad! Recycling suggestion. Throw your ash into the compost pile. Lotsa nitrogen in ashes and is easier for plants to absorb since the ashes is so fine. Blends in nicely with the soil.
@@Rich-t6w I did that, didn’t you see me talking about it? 😝
I ❤ Oliver

12 days in the cage for a cat is a long time. He needs to be out move around & be active otherwise he gets depressed. He needs to jump around and strache his legs otherwise his joints get stiff😏I like your videos and love your dog. He is adorable 🐶❤
Happy Monday it's below zero here in Michigan 😊
Yeah it’s cold and been so windy too making it feel colder
Glad Elvis is better.😅
Lesgo another banger vid
🤙
Please give Sushi a warm shelter or box. She looks like she's freezing❤love all your animals❤❤❤❤they do need extra food to build fat and thick straw for the birds to keep warm, If there kept in harsh cold.
@@RoseWaddell-k6e she’s not freezing, she’s great actually 😉
@@HiddenSpringFarmOh that's great 🙏 Chad.
❤
I Love your farm and you vids... I hope mor pepols cum to this Solution.....
Thanks 🙏
Hi Chad. I still don't see how your animals can tolerate the frigid cold. I'm glad the cats are ok and safe. Sushi is a beautiful cat.
It’s just nature really. The birds have feathers, pigs have blubber, Olive & the rabbits are double coated, and the cats gain weight and a winter coat. It’s amazing actually.
Do you keep Olive outside?
Nooice! 😎 STOC
🇦🇺Hi from Queensland Australia. It’s almost 11pm on Monday 20th. It’s 21C at the moment but 82% humidity. On wed the high will be 35C and Friday 36C. Not nice.
Yeah that’s warm. 21 is nice though. It’s way past your bedtime though eh 😜
We are expecting 3 or more inches in Houston. Crazy
Did sushi actually make NumNumNumNum sounds with that tuna treat ?!
Yes she does that nom nom sound as she eats, especially if I’m petting her at the same time.
@HiddenSpringFarm Their lifespan is usually only 4 to 6 years so age probably has something to do with it. Are the hens the same age
Who else watches for the cats?
Would putting vaseline on the roosters crowns help prevent frost bite ? The oils in it should repel moisture.
Love all the animals ❤😊
Sorry this was suppose to be a comment.
Its normal for some roosters to have a hard time in the cold.
How about fresh straw for the kitties?
