It is a shame how rare it is to find a modern edition with that classical look, fabric on cover, embossed letters and all… these to me always look like cheap young adult novels, with the paper flopping around…
I’ve always found the battles for Beleriand and 1st age tales more epic than the latter ages, maybe because I didn’t know much about the earlier stuff before I started watching NOTR, credit to you Matt keep up the good work 👍
Had received mine today as well, Incredible and worth the money. Looks remarkable on the shelves. Hope everyone can snag also the Maps of Middle Earth to. Which includes 4 fold-out maps by John Howe himself.
I love the Art of my fellow Canadian John Howe! He's a huge influence in my own Fantasy Illustrations. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't read The History of Middle Earth...yet. My summer reading list 😉. 🤘😎🖖🇨🇦🕊️
Does it look like the letter print has improved at all? That was the one downside i found with the first set is that the letters look zoomed in and smooth and filler in. One comment i saw described it was the paperback print stretched to fill the fuller size page, which i could see it being.
Today is one of the happiest days in my life. I've been trying to complete the History of Middle Earth collection in the old spanish print of these books for the last 10 years. Minotauro, the spanish distributor, has not reprinted them since the late 2000s. I'm only missing The War of the Jewels. Now that I know they are reprinting them in english I'll probably sell all my spanish copies to collectors and buy the new prints. It is damn time I had the entire collection. (Did not buy the print on demand versions from Harper Collins because the covers were kinda dull)
Strangely enough, the first two of those three covers are actually sort of...my least favorite John Howe images. Oh well. The cover for Volume 6 is really cool.
Those books look beautiful. I have the original hardcovers. The Book of Lost Tales Vol 1 was my first Tolkien book. The Lost Road was my favorite of the early books. I'm interested to see what Volume 3 will look like. Original the covers had brilliant artwork by Alan Lee and not the single color covers.
I have Box Set One. My only complaint is that the pages are thinner than I would like. I'm keeping mine with the John Howe art showing. That's pretty much the whole reason for this set. I already have that 3-volume set that was published a few years ago, which I now need to re-home.
Great video! I’m currently reading volume 4 so I was curious to see if the eastern and western expansion maps would be reproduced any better in these new editions compared to my paperback. Doesn’t look like it. The eastern extension is still illegible!
@thebrowneyesofmandalore6524 it's an older version with a light brown blank page at the back that unfolds a few times into a like 3 foot by 3 foot map that is still attached to the book so I'd have to cut it out. It's very big and detailed.
@@duncanramsay9262 That’s sounds really cool. I just thought we might have the same one as the one I have also has a big poster sized map. At this point I know the geography of Middle Earth better than our own world. 😂
How are you getting the HC printings? Or is it possible to get those in the US other than the WM imprint? It’s kinda of annoying my H+LOTR box set has the HC mark and these all have the WM mark…
I wonder if these will get the HarperCollins Deluxe Hardcover Slipcase treatment; individually, as opposed to the History of Middle-Earth 3-Volume Box.
I've been buying these same books for 30 years. When is it going to be enough. Let's hope these sets are it... Probably not. ¡¡But I'm not buying Fall of Numenor!! That's just ridiculous.
Una pena que la encuadernación sea tan pobre. Va pegado. Es como un libro de bolsillo al que le han pegado la tapa dura. La calidad del papel es solo un poco mejor que la versión en paperback anterior. Un poco decepcionante.
What I love about the classic book covers is that they give off a very regal look. But I agree that John Howe’s work is too much to cover up.

Same
Agreed and I do think there’s a thematic point to that.
“Once that once was is lost…”
Me too. I am a first age girl
you should totally do a tolkien collection video

That Ulmo art is superb. Thanks for the video, Matt. Great as always
I love John Howe's art! He knew how to depict Tolkien's world!

Also, happy birthday, my friend! 🎉
Amazing!!!! They look so good next to each other! Thanks for reviewing them, Matt!

The Book Dragon in me is stirring
Those books look amazing for collecting, I'm glad they made new versions! I was wondering if you could do an updated vid on minecraft Middle-Earth?
Matt--is the Amandil-Elendil dialogue content you mention starting around 8:50 also in the Fall of Numenor book that was just published last year?
Very interesting 👌 personally I prefer a cleaner cover, but this art is great 😊

Once seen... 1:07 Could they have used the same alignment for the titles? Some are left aligned, some are centered.
I have all of these on my amazon wishlist. Thanks for the review. Hope all is well! God bless!

Gosh I need to get my hands on these box sets!

Amazing book covering, always great to see new book versions 😊
I want to be that old lady in the old folks home, that relives her old life in Middle-Earth! 🥰
I thought The Tower of Elwing was in Aman. If so, how would Orcs get near it?

Congrats for the recognition by Tolkien Society! =).
Thanks so much! It is definitely an honor!
would you reccomend getting these over the older black edge covered single books from 2000 i believe
That's so cool, so I'm assuming the next 2 box sets will be Vol 3:The Hobbit Trilogy followed by Vol 4:The LOTR?
Is there a Hobbit/LOTR box set that matches up well with this new 4 box set look?
Yes, the Alan Lee one from 2020.
How is the language in the books? (English) is it on par with the actual Trilogy?
Is there anywhere you can buy prints of John Howe's art? I'm sure I could find some online but I'd prefer to support the man directly if possible.
I'm using these releases to finally read HoME.
My copy of the silmarilion has a huge map of Beleriand in the back that unfolds i want to frame it
Is yours the big book with the illustrations by John Howe? I have that one and it’s one of my favorite books I own.
@thebrowneyesofmandalore6524 it's an older version with a light brown blank page at the back that unfolds a few times into a like 3 foot by 3 foot map that is still attached to the book so I'd have to cut it out. It's very big and detailed.

Thanks SO much for this, Really helpful :D

Look under the product details before you buy.
Also:
William Morrow = US market
HarperCollins = UK (and Commonwealth) market

they won't.
@insurrbution why?
Man my wallet, but I think this will be worth it. Rather than getting each one by one. ❤🤙🏽👏🏽👍🏽Thank you!
How good are the quality of the books?
Glued binding and thinner paper.
what is that game pad?? I need it!!!
what is that big green and blue volume in the background on the shelf underneath the legos
I think you are referring to the new edition of History of The Hobbit by John Rateliff.
Wowsers! How cool!😍
Happy birthday!
Disappointed in the quality of these books. Thinner paper and glued bindings. Love the Howe art but the books are not worth the price.
Are they different in quality from the illustrated hard cover series? Those are sewn with thick paper.
@@michaelzoch2306 yes. These new home sets are cheaply made
