However, when I go to calibrate for Rec.709 in slot 2, it changes the color profile to the newly created icc profile. I've noticed, sine updating to Ventura, that my 271C flickers a lot. I'll be working in an app such as Lightroom or Chrome and when I click the window of the app, the screen starts to flicker. If I close the app, it stops. I can even reopen the same app and have normal behavior. It happens quite randomly it seems. I never noticed this until recently and I'm wondering if Ventura is the culprit.
You’ve mentioned in your past videos, for heavy retouching on capture one you recommend at least 24 gpu/32 ram. With the new release of capture one 23, do those specs still apply? Considering the new version is more efficient and faster
I'm traveling at the moment. I'll run some test next week and will probably publish a video on it. However, based on what I know so far about C1, I would still consider GPU upgrade to give you the advantage and just more horse power in general. But stay tuned.
hey Art! I'm running an apple M2 Max with Ventura 13.3 and Palette Master Element V1.3.19.0, Calibrator V1.3.7 (iD220) and trying to calibrate 2 BenQ SW321C's. Hello! In a video you recommended not using HDMI to connect the Benq monitor, I have the SW271c, but if I want to get a clean signal and use a blackmagic ultrastudio, I must connect it via HDMI, is it advisable to do it that way?
When I click on the affiliate links, both Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro and Plus lead to "Pro". Since you said no device on the market can calibrate MacBook Pro display, why are they claiming the Plus device is supporting up to 2000 nits displays?
Amazon list them on the same page, you just have to choose the device. These devices are meant to calibrate all display not just MBP. And the plus model can support up to 2000 nits, that is true, it has an updated sensor. To do that on the MacBook Pro the display brightness needs to be brought up manually to the higher nits. And for clarification it is not no device can calibrate the display, you can but the software and matrix / spectral data has not been updated to accommodate for these displays yet. Although there may be a solution as of now... investigating.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks, I mean, if you cannot calibrate MacBook Pro with them, it's false advertising - the federal Lanham Act allows civil lawsuits for false advertising that “misrepresents the nature, characteristics, qualities, or geographic origin” of goods or services. 15 U.S.C. § 1125(a). The FTC also enforces false advertising laws on behalf of consumers. In other words, you could sue them and win! :)
I have a great relationship with the company and I don't have any intent to sue. They never advertised that they can calibrate XDR displays, which didn't exist when the plus device came out. They didn't mislead because it can calibrate displays up to 2000 nits brightness. Be it any other displays, this can be done but with Apple it requirer and API integration. Also you can calibrate but it is not recommend, the gamut is smaller. I'm just taking technical and not legality here. I rather leave the latter out of the conversation because it just distract from the subject at hand.
I'm using a SW240, Mac Mini M1 running Ventura with a x-rite i1 Display Pro. All is well with PME until I get to the very end to click FINISH and the screen goes Black (still backlit) I waited for 30 mins the first time bc I thought it was still running/saving the calibration results. But I have no keyboard controls (force quit doesn't work) I had to turn off the monitor and was back to a desktop without being convinced PME worked :( Any advice? i.e. Should I downgrade to Monterey?
There's a bug in PME that cause this issue, what you have to do is just turn off and on the display and it should work. If it does not then pull the display connection out and reconnect it again.
The Mac studio with Ventura 13.2 and Benq PD322OU . With 4K , texts are so tiny, unable to work. Larger font brings down the display resolution and display becomes worthless. Color is washed out and dull. What should be the settings for the best possible display with great color, contrast and sharpness for editing with big fonts that are comfortable to eyes. Thanks in Advance.
Lots of issues there. So washed out color can be because HDR is enabled. If it is disabled it. If not then it is the matted panel coating and some are not used to this especially when coming from smart phone and modern devices. As far as text size it is a scaling thing and it does not bring the resolution down, it is more complex than that. Are you asking for the setting or display spec. This is all based on personal preference, but you always have to option to just get Apple Studio Display as well.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks for your response. HDR is off. Please advise the Ventura 13.2 System setting and PD 322OU menu/Display Pilot settings. Would really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.
Forget display pilot for now. Just use Ventura setting, what you need to do is just choose the scaling resolution that works best for your vision. There's no magic selection or number it is based on what works for you. For the display put it in P3 Color mode and just go with that, You should get good colors.
Thank you Art, for all your very informative videos! Has been a great help already! I have however two question since this is my first HW calibrated monitor.. After I've gone through the calibration proces, the PME software stores the profiles on my SW271C under either one of the Calibration 1,2,3 settings, but it also puts those profiles on my M1 Max Colour profile settings. Now I've made one for Photo and one for Video work... The second question I have is, .. ---If I want to switch from Photo to video work.. do I have to switch the color profile on only one of them? Either the Monitor or the Mac..? Or do I need to change it to the same profile on both of them? Would really appreciate the help, as I havent found an answer to these questions anywhere.

For Resolve I need to use the Rec709 Profile I created with PME..? I do however more work and more with DCI-P3 as it's more common these days with new LED OLED tv and smart-phones. - Interesting you brought this up. It is where the industry is going but it has not become the de facto standard just yet, which is disappointing. And another question I have, With Photoshop, in the Color Settings Panel, do I keep using the standard Adobe RGB 1998 profile as my working spaces?, or should I now also use the Newly created PME Profile? (I shoot with my camera's RAW and work in Adobe RGB 1998.) -Either will do just fine. I should make a video about this. The technical answer is Adobe RGB or any reference color space will have greater compatibility between displays. Choosing your display icc profile lock you into one. Either will do, but display icc will give you a slight edge, but not one that will really change visually what you see or do. I know at export I should always use the standard RGB/sRGB profile. -Yes that is correct.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks for the replies! I do also really hope DCi-P3/P3 gets the facto standard, Rec709 really is a limiting factor when most video formats these days are 10-bit color and up. I guess I can leave Photoshop at Adobe RGB then. Didn't notice a big difference between it and my display icc calibration, other than a slight higher wider color and larger dynamic range. ---Just one last question, (and then I'm all set :) I use the latest PME 1.3.19 Was my assumption correct to set the black point to 0.3 nits when I created both my Adobe RGB and Resolve profiles? (Using a xRite i1 Display Pro-- on my BenQ SW271C monitor) Is it better in Absolute black, considering 0.3 nits gives more headroom to edit/grade the shadows?
P3 will be the standard some day, it is just a matter of when. Using 1.3.19 I would give absolute black a try and see how the scaling works out. I put a link to download the test asset in the video.
please, i can't get a correct calibration, i have a benq sw271c monitor, an imac and davinci resolve, should i activate "mac display color profile" in resolve? can i use decklink card with benq monitor? what is the best calibration option for color grading in resolve?
Yes activate. Yes you can use decklink card, first calibrate BenQ without decklink and then add decklink in. Best calibration option, if you are using REC 709 is REC 709, Gamma 2.4 black 0.3. Luminance choose what you like between 80-160 nits.
The error is not necessary related to the OS. It is the calibration software and changes made to the M2 Pro / Max that prevents calibration app for software calibrated display from working at the moment.
Somewhat, Most if not all of the settings shown here are still valid. They put in some dynamic links into the system dialog, i.e. Screen Saver now has a link to Lock Screen. Because of this logical grouping change, the dynamic link should have been there from the starts, at least this is getting fixed now.
@@ArtIsRight well it took me a while to find the "Resolution" button, I think it takes an "Option" click now. However I don't play with that setting much so maybe I was looking in the wrong place.
Resolution should have just been the slider selection, it is still there on all of my test machine. That is a fundamental settings and will be there persistently.

what Mac OS version, laptop, desktop, what cable are you using to connect, what PME version?
@@ArtIsRight Ventura 13.0.1 /Mac studio PRO/cable using that came with monitor Benq PD3420Q/PME 1.3.18
Ventura needs PME update, in the works....
Yes, Ventura is rather buggy in my opinion and has been many display out put blunders in many of the past os releases
What version of palette master element do you recommend for macOS Ventura 13?
At this time none, they are working on an update
my mac does not recognise my screen anymore after macOS update! any idea how can I get it to work?
go through diagnostic process, restart, swap cables, try other connection, etc. contact display manufacturer support or apple for further help on this
hey Art! I'm running an apple M2 Max with Ventura 13.3 and Palette Master Element V1.3.19.0, Calibrator V1.3.7 (iD220) and trying to calibrate 2 BenQ SW321C's. After I choose all of my setting and click calibrate the program crashes. Am I missing something or is the software not compatible with this new version of OS? Thank you for all you do man. You are my go to guy for anything motor related. I've learned so much from your channel.
Try 1.3.18
After calibrating with colour palette master element. Do I leave the high dynamic range off in the settings? I'm finally getting passed validation after calibrating.
Don't turn it back on.
@@ArtIsRight Thank you
Nice & Thanks :)
Welcome!
Hello! In a video you recommended not using HDMI to connect the Benq monitor, I have the SW271c, but if I want to get a clean signal and use a blackmagic ultrastudio, I must connect it via HDMI, is it advisable to do it that way?
You can use it in that situation
@@ArtIsRight is it better to use the blackmagic ultrastudio 3g? or not really
I'm getting one into test and do extensive video with in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.
@@ArtIsRight thanks :)
if you alt tab to a different program and back to the xrite software you should get the window back
The Mac studio with Ventura 13.2 and Benq PD322OU .
@@ArtIsRight Thank you! Appreciate your recommendation.
Thank you Art, for all your very informative videos! Has been a great help already!
I have however two question since this is my first HW calibrated monitor.. BenQ SW271C
The first question, ...do I need to set the Colour Profile settings on my M1 Max to a specific profile before I want to calibrate my BenQ monitor?
Like setting it to a profile that corresponds to the one I want to create? Or does it not matter at all?
After I've gone through the calibration proces, the PME software stores the profiles on my SW271C under either one of the Calibration 1,2,3 settings, but it also puts those profiles on my M1 Max Colour profile settings.
Now I've made one for Photo and one for Video work...
The second question I have is, ..
---If I want to switch from Photo to video work.. do I have to switch the color profile on only one of them? Either the Monitor or the Mac..?
Or do I need to change it to the same profile on both of them?
Would really appreciate the help, as I havent found an answer to these questions anywhere.

What video program do you use. If you use Resolve you should have a calibration for it. Other programs you can always use Photo Setting the color management module in the OS or the app will take care of the rest.
@@ArtIsRight Ahh thank you so much! Have been looking for that info but couldn't find it.
I am starting to learn Resolve, as It's a great program I want to use more, but for now I have been working (and probably keep on doing so as well next to Resolve) keep working with Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro.
For Resolve I need to use the Rec709 Profile I created with PME..? I do however more work and more with DCI-P3 as it's more common these days with new LED OLED tv and smart-phones.
And another question I have,
With Photoshop, in the Color Settings Panel, do I keep using the standard Adobe RGB 1998 profile as my working spaces?, or should I now also use the Newly created PME Profile?
(I shoot with my camera's RAW and work in Adobe RGB 1998.)
I know at export I should always use the standard RGB/sRGB profile.

- Interesting you brought this up. It is where the industry is going but it has not become the de facto standard just yet, which is disappointing.

-Either will do just fine.
---Just one last question, (and then I'm all set :)
I use the latest PME 1.3.19
Was my assumption correct to set the black point to 0.3 nits when I created both my Adobe RGB and Resolve profiles?
@@ArtIsRight thanks a lot!!!
@@ArtIsRight is it better to use a decklink or connect my benq momitor directly to the mac with the usbc cable?
You can do either actually, especially if you use Resolve.
How do i calobrate the display for my mac mini m2 pro? The system settings are very different...
What device do you have?
@@ArtIsRight A Mac Mini M2 Pro, and a LG HDR WFHD Monitor
M2 Pro can't be calibrated yet. Also the M2 Max as well. Some changes on the chip prevents calibration software from working properly.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks for clearing it up! By "yet", do you mean a future OS update could enable it?
The error is not necessary related to the OS. It is the calibration software and changes made to the M2 Pro / Max that prevents calibration app for software calibrated display from working at the moment.
Ventura 13.1 seems to have changed that settings dialog again.
Sir my mac in system setting >display in brightness slider bar option not available & unable to disable auto brightness…..please help how to change?😂
sounds like you have an external 3rd party display.
@@ArtIsRight Sir I’m purchased mac mini m2 using with Lg 4k monitor bt display brightness option not show in display section & 2nd issue is
When i am setup with 4k resolution all window menu bar too small & default resolution size show 1080p or view normally? Please suggest how to correct ?
Display bigness control in macOS is for Apple displays only. 3rd party display like what you have, brightness needs to be change manually on the display. Nothing is wrong with the OS. And scaling is fine, 1080, 2K, choose what works for you
My additional monitor will no longer rotate after MacOS update
There should be a display setting that give you the option when you select the external display.
3:24 That Preset mode isn't there anymore.
It is for XDR and not for Normal LCD
There is no brightness or True tone option
Not all computer will have this. Older laptop or desktop will not have this.
There are no presets either
disclaimer in the beginning of the video, not all functions are available on all devices. Presets are only for Apple XDR displays.
