      @@chanunnaki gaming is pretty much all digital. when those servers go down or the license expires you rely on piracy (if its even possible on the system). even if you're buying games on disc you're getting a crappy version that was probably built 2 months before the game was sold with no dlc support. then theres games where the main selling point was the online component. dont even get me started on Nintendo's self destructing digital only games like that mario battle royal. nothings being preserved.

    • @ContemporaryCultist
      @ContemporaryCultist 2 года назад +23

      @@ContemporaryCultist the Switch and Steam Deck hits different parts of the market. They both play games, but one is a fairly closed system with a fairly controlled experience, the other is a fairly open system that has avenues to tailor your experience however you want. One pushes the limit to being a handheld size, the other is a "handheld" technically but let's be real.
      The Switch was never designed to be a powerhouse, it was designed to be a Nintendo experience on the go. Steam Deck was designed to bridge the gap between handheld and PC gaming so it needs to be optimized in some areas and relatively powerful to deliver an acceptable to good experience.
      There are also competitors looking to see if they can enter the Steam Deck's space with even better hardware, but time will tell.

    It actually brings tears to my eyes to see that we are emulating Xbox 360 and Playstation 3s on a handheld device. I recall an issue of Next Generation Gaming or EGM magazine that said that we would have PlayStation 3 power level handheld devices by 2030. At the time I thought that it was ridiculous because the PlayStation 2 was the fresh hot thing and I just could not imagine anything strong enough to emulate that on handheld. I am so happy that we are finally at this point and I hope that the community continues to drive us forward into better and better emulation.

    A comparison of the 360-emulated version and the native PC version of "Condemned 1" would be great.
    The PC version runs maxed out in 1280x800 (1280x720 + black bars) stable 60 fps and uses only 7.5 - 8.5 watts.
    The 360 version seems to run with 40 - 45 fps (can the emulator be set to 40Hz/40fps?) with probably lower settings.
    And how long is the battery life while running emulated Xbox360-games?

    The big thing missing for me is kinect support. Controler titles are better on PC. Consoles with their inferior compute power were only interesting to me for their motion controls. Modern TVs with their low latency make kinect games a lot more responsive, but rendering them at fluid 60 in 4k would help the experience even more. Sadly microsoft doesn't provide back compatibility for those titles. If they are not preserved through emulation they will die with the consoles. Also an iOS version of the emulator with a software kinect could become interesting, as apple uses the prime sense tech of the first kinect for their device unlocks.

    Gonna wait till the xenia version on EmuDeck gets updated to this build, I've genuinely no interest in putting Windows on the Deck. Super impressed with those gains though. Might finally end up playing through that Red Dead game.

    • @marsilies
      @marsilies 2 года назад +1

      There isn't really an EmuDeck specific build of xenia, instead EmuDeck runs the Windows version of Xenia (the only one available right now) in a Proton container. So you're running an emulator through a compatibility layer, which adds complexity, and thus bugs and stability issues.
      The Xenia developers are working on a Linux-native build that they say is coming "eventually," but there's no set date for that, so it could be years away.

    • @Latchfpv
      @Latchfpv 2 года назад +1

      @@marsilies Eeh, dxvk/proton stuff is pretty robust as is, it'll run Xenia just fine. Hell it runs a lot of things just fine and sometimes even better than on windows even though it's through translation layers. I just suspect that the build in EmuDeck isn't the latest canary is all, just a matter of waiting for that to happen in my usecase.

    No need to emulate if you want to try out Condemned: Criminal Origins, it's available on the Steam store and is rated platinum over on ProtonDB so should run really well on the Deck out of the box. The sequel however, now that's a game that never came out on PC, though I believe it struggles to be emulated with visual artefacts impacting the experience.

    Using a 60FPS patch for Fable 2 got me a steady 60 with very infrequent drops and stutters. I played through the entire game from start to finish and it felt great. Red Dead would run at 60 at the beginning but the FPS would slowly drop off down to the low 40's for me and I couldn't find a fix for it. What I mean by that is I could save quit the game and restart the app and it would run at 60 but then it would slowly drop off again down to 40 over the course of about 20-30 minutes. Crackdown wouldn't load past the start menu, Need for Speed Most Wanted had terrible FPS issues but that's just an issue with that game, and I played a few Lego games that ran perfectly fine. Xenia is miles ahead of where they were just a year ago and many games are legitimately playable now.

    To get MGS2 and 3 to work in Xenia you need to extract its xex-file from the iso using a program called isoextract. That way you can start the individual xex-file for the game you want to play. It might sound like a hassle but it's really easy to do, isoextract does the work for you as long as you have an iso-file.
