I can't believe the majority of comments is about Grass being in the SS. People, reality is not just black and white, and people are conditioned by historical circumstances. And people can repent. And do something to make a change, like this man did. If only had you read his work you would understand that such words just cannot stem from hypocrisy. I am very grateful to be able to listen to Grass' words. Thanks for sharing this.

+ariel osemberg should I do it?
Should I break you verbally by giving you astute arguments and just dominate you by showing how neurotic you are? Are you smart enough to be open-minded or is it the other way around?

He was born 1927, so he was six in 1933, and 1939 at the start of the war he was 12, 6 years conditioned by hardcore nazi propaganda (from 6 to 12!) and now you want to tell us how a bad nazi the 80 year old man is because he lived thru the war, in a tyrannical system, from 12 to 17? ...
I wouldn't judge what a 15 year old does ... if it is during nazi time, or under Stalin, or Mao, or during British massacres in India... what could a 15 year old know?

You can not force the writing to be faster. The quality will be compromised. He said something like that. It is remarkable.

Was will man denn bitte von einem 12-Jährigen erwarten?

I read the flounder and I’m currently halfway through the tin drum. His writing is just magical. He loves to write about food that’s for sure 😂

It`s so crazy to finish reading The Tin Drum and, in the next moment, hear the author discussing modern reality... Facebook and smartphones and all the other crap..
As for his 'SS' story, remember the lines from the book. When Oscar made a prosecutor steal from a store. That prosecutor, after that, became the most compassionate prosecutor in the city because he understood that every person is flawed. So, do not rush into criticizing people when you hear someone did a wrongdoing of some sort. Next time, it could be you.
