Early January 1991, my baby girl - Sarah - died in my arms at 9 days old. As my mom drove me home from the hospital that night "Sara" came on the radio. I frantically turned up the volume and let Stevie's ethereal voice soothe my broken heart like it was a sign or message from my daughter. To This day, whenever I hear that song I get a few tears of joy to have had my Sarah and of agony for her loss.
My father was slowly but steadily wasting away, his brain deteriorating more and more. A fitting song had long been Mike & The Mechanics' (I wish I would have told him in the) "Living Years". Then I stumbled over James Blunt's "Monsters", he wrote to his father who was in severe danger of dying (his remaining kidney failed, the other he had donated long ago". A song of a son telling his father it is all good, you have done your job and done it well, now it is for us to chase the monsters away. A few months later it was my turn to turn out the light and close the door - for the last time. A few weeks later I came over Judith Durham's "Danny Boy" (don't ask me why), and in the comments I saw a lot of RIPs. Out of curiosity I had a look, yes, she had died on the same day as my father. There is so much music that can have a meaning - music appeals directly to your emotions. It is good as there you have the opportunity to give in to them, having a cathartic effect instead of carrying around with you. What I learned way too late - one should cherish one's life, not care what others think. One should be open and honest. That at first might bewilder people, but then (most) appreciate it. It can be so simple as when passing by someone making a remark that makes the other smile. Or showing them something that you usually never look at, but is actually nice. Like a tiny timid dragon bronze sculpture on a garden doorpost. Speaking openly when something does not work out, without accusations, without anger. We are all imperfect as the universe is imperfect, so appreciate the goods in us and let's try to find ways how to deal with the bad. Got philosophical again - sorry, but getting people to think about what we say and do to others a little more, that would make the world so much better.
@@feedingravens The day after my mom died, I went to our favorite breakfast spot on a fishing pier. Our favorite table was empty, just waiting for us. Mr. Professor of Rock, you have done all of us a great service with the entertaining backstories of artists from our youthful years. If anyone rocks, its YOU!!! Thank you Prof! 😃💗
‘The Romantic adrenaline began to wane’ What a great way to describe that situation. The talent crammed into the band then add the relationship factors it’s incredible what came out. Rumours is one of those rare albums that will be discovered by each new generation and enjoyed again and again.
OMG.... This was THE most heartbreaking lecture the Professor has ever done. Clearly you were having trouble doing this, or at least the quick cut away when talking about a life that could have been. I'll be honest, I love this one as well, but it will always feel different and it will introduce a level of pain as someone who was to be a father before we finally had our daughter, but somehow a positive test changed to a negative after about three weeks. I wonder what may have been building for us, taken before he or she could have formed. I think about it every time I see the daughter we were able to bring into the world and how she should have a big brother or sister. Now this song will always be much harder to hear than I ever thought. Thank you Professor, it was a bitter pill, but I appreciate your heart and spirit helping us through the pain. AND MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES ON YOUR LOSS.
I love this song, but never knew the entire story. I’d read little bits here and there, but you’ve put it all together. This has brought me to tears. So much heartbreak. I always knew it was a sad song but didn’t totally understand. Some of us have felt the deep pain of heartbreak, and this song and the explanation brings it flooding back. Anyway, I love what you do , Professor!!!
I used to love this song- still do, but now it’s different. My best friend, Sarah, took her life at the end of January. ‘Sara” was her favorite song that contained her name. I cry whenever I hear it 💔
It's one of those songs that just is. I can't imagine the world without it and I wouldn't want to try. But on the other hand I've known the bits and bobs behind it, and I could and sometimes feel guilty for being grateful the world happened as it did to produce this song.
Thank you for another Stevie video! It's a shame that baby Sara never came to be, and we would have a little Stevie. But she has many spiritual children out there called fans. The song is a great pep talk that we all need sometimes to remember our value and talents when life kicks us in the gut. Sometimes you have to be your own cheerleader, toot your own horn, and get back up on the horse. You have to appreciate the poet in your heart that never lets you down. This whole album is great- Storms, Sisters of the Moon, Beautiful child, Tusk. Flashbacks of being 16. Or on the "edge of seventeen" 😆
thank you, this video actually opened up a really cathartic cry session for me. I've always loved sarah as a diverse song to sing in karaoke but learning about the depths of this song brought up a lot of healthy healing emotion for me. i love what you do. never change, and don't you ever stop
My daughter, my only child, was born in 1991. I named her Sara after the beautiful song. Her mother died of breast cancer 10 years later. I get choked up every time I hear the song. Stevie's vocals are so beautiful and ethereal. My daughter is now 33 years old and the mother of a boy and girl twins. Sara is will always be the poet in my heart.
Sara was part of the soundtrack of my life. It was the favorite song of my fiancee at the time. She ended up talking her life on Christmas Eve 1980. One of the most tragic events of my lifetime. 😢
Sometimes I just don’t have the words to express how grateful I am to be able to “attend” your class, Professor.. so today I’ll just say, thank you, You Rock 💗🎶👍
My freshman year in high school, turned 15 in late 1979. Sarah was on the radio, one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Rumours was one of my favorite albums in Junior high school, everyone, especially older kids, had that album. Great song. I grew up with Fleetwood Mac. I attribute their music to helping me survive much. Much love Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John Mcvie, and Mick Fleetwood. I turn 60 years old in October. The chain remains. RIP, lovely song bird. I will always love you, all 5 of you.
Hey there! I first heard Fleetwood Mac when "Hold me" was on the radio in '82. But they became my fave band (at the time) in '87 with Tango In The Night. I went back to their previous songs with their hits album in '88. "Sara" is a great song both musically and in Stevie's emotion while singing. Thanks for this video, Prof! Keep up the cool job!
My older brother bought me this album for Christmas 1979. I haven't listened to it very much over the years, but I'm getting it out today due to your video.😊
Definitely has allot of underrated songs on it. Listen to Christine’s Brown Eyes,Stevie’s Sisters of the moon, Beautiful child. everyone expected another Rumors & it was a double album which made it twice as expensive that may have hurt sales.
From the first time I seen her on my mothers television set singing Edge of Seventeen in a red flowing outfit in the early 80's I was mesmerized and I've been in love with her voice ever since.
I just read an article about it yesterday. Stevie said it was about the child she never had with Don Henley as she would have named her daughter Sara. But when it’s Fleetwood Mac is it ever that simple?! The drama and in fighting in the band is legendary! The Chain is their vow to remain a band in spite of the five of them wanting to kill each other!
Yes, it is never simple with Fleetwood Mac and especially with Stevie. In a 2014 Billboard interview Nicks said, "Had I married Don and had that baby, and had she been a girl, I would have named her Sara... It's accurate, but not the entirety of it." Yes, she acknowledges that is part of the meaning but also clearly states there is more to the meaning. In other interviews (some of which Prof of Rock quotes) she explains other aspects of the meaning including her affair with Mick, her friend, her muse, her alter ego, etc. It's a complex song with complex meaning that only Stevie will ever fully know the true meaning of.
@@ProfessorofRock Neat, your parents had amazing taste in music. Stevie's name is "Stephanie" on her birth certificate, but everyone just calls her by her nickname.
Not exactly on topic but I was a young kid when Leather & Lace came out. I thought the female voice was "Dawn" Henley and the male voice was Stevie Nicks. Oops. 😆
Sara is so wonderfully wistful and full of longing. It’s so ethereal and hauntingly evocative. It has always been one of my favorites from her and the rest of the band is obviously great here.
This has been one of my favorites from fleetwood mac since it came out. It has a surreal feel to it that takes me to another place. One of Stevies' best.
This long running version of Fleetwood Mac had a great sound to their songs over the years but I've been listening to the earlier versions of the band before Stevie and Lindsay joined and I really like all versions of Fleetwood Mac thanks for the memories.🎶🎶
What I love about Tusk is that it is such a bold and daring experimental statement from the hottest band of the late 70s and how do you follow a landmark album such as rumours you get one of the most wildest left turns in classic rock history the Christine McVie songs are gentle and comforting the Stevie Nicks songs are a mix of ballads and mid tempo rockers and we get to the crazy genius of the album Lindsey Buckingham's new wave and Brian Wilson and Eno inspired numbers which to me love them or hate them is why I love this album
GREAT video. Amazing story. Thank you so much for this. All of us, rich or poor, mundane or famous, live lives of floating joy and crushing pain. Thank you for this tie to everyone on this world. Well done!
This is my favorite song of ALL songs in the world…That’s generally a difficult thing to do, pick ONE, but it really is. Stevie’s voice and lyrics are pure perfection on this song. A mysteriously coded, poetic masterpiece. 🌹
Omg the imagery of Stevie and Sarah in this gothic house, long white flowy curtains blowing in tall open windows at night, candles all lit, writing music, piano playing, drinking wine and the dark wing of Mick’s Porsche driving up the canyon to these two enchanting women. Haunting really.
"Tusk" is such a great record. After one of the best-selling albums of all time, Fleetwood Mac released an art record. What balls. My favorite: "What Makes You Think You're The One?"
Your best I've watched, so far. Your titles always draw me in, because I can't figure the song, singer, or band you're referring too. Then you present a whole new meaning of it, then it's stuck in my head until another sticks in it's place. Followed them since Penguin, but they lost me at Tusk, except for tis song. Now I have to read all the lyrics. Thanks for the wake up.
I remember when John Lennon was killed all the radio stations were playing this song in dedication to him. I named my daughter after this song. She grew up to be a talented musician. She and her brother bought me the Stevie Nicks Barbie this past Christmas. Professor I’m so sorry for the loss of your great love, what a heart breaking story. This song just brings out so many emotions that stir the soul. 😢 Thank you for another great episode!
Simply put...this is my favorite song of all time. Just like yourself, it helped me through a tough, tough time with a relationship with a gal that was one of those "she just wanted to be friends" but I wanted it to be so much more, and it dragged on like that for more than a few years before we finally went our completely separate ways. But more than that, the layers, mysticism, lyrics, vocals (lead and background)...just everything on every possible level is so perfect and so moving. Pick up the Tusk Deluxe box set released a few years back that has both the longer version of the song as well as a remixed surround version for an even more ethereal experience :). And although it's been said so many times before in this day and age when music (particularly popular music) has fallen into such disarray and utter mediocrity without any meaningfulness, they just do not make songs and music like this anymore. Hopefully someday the pendulum will swing back, but I don't see that happening any time soon.
The intro is iconic!!! From the standpoint of music alone, I believe collectively, it's Fleetwood Mac at their finest hour!!! For sure one of my favorite songs from them. ❤❤❤ I'd love to hear the whole song!!!
I have heard that both Lindsey Buckingham and Tom Petty hated Henley with her and thought he was way too controlling. And I gotta say, when one of your best guy friends and the ex that has legitimate beef with you hate a guy for you, it's time to listen!
POR, how do you come up with these stories. These are the most interesting and informative stories on the internet. I know it’s been said before but it needs to be said again, you are the MAN when it comes to music info
I was only twelve when it was released, but I new it was Deep...Very Deep. I feel like years and years went by before hearing it again. Then... RUclips!!!!!!!! I love it so much. The "Sea of Love... love to Drown" line is hands down the most picturesque, emotion evoking lyric for me. Ethereal for sure
Well Professor, you and I agree on one thing... Sara was and is one of my most favorite songs. I was all of 18 years old when it came out. High school was nearing its end and I had no plans. My mom left me in the apartment because she moved and basically I was on my own. I knew I was leaving and my next door neighboor gave me a parting gift of a joint. I had never imbibed and even to this day don't partake. But being 18 with an uncertain future, I lit up that joint. And then, in a moment of inspiration, I took the old two speaker stereo my mom left behind and put on an FM channel. Then, I got a pillow, laid on the floor and put the speakers on either side of my head like headphones. Well, then of course, Sara, LONG VERSION, came on. And I was mystically and spiritually lifted and my doobied mind was transported. It was such an experience that 44 years later, I still feel it in my brain. Ever since then, my whole body MELTS whenever I hear that song. In fact, if I hadn't heard it in a while and it comes on, sometimes I actually change the station because I can get overcome with emotions and if I am driving, that's not a good thing.
Thank you for doing this video, putting into the words I feel for Stevie Nicks Sara. I love this song so much. I watched this video multiple times, as you put into the words my heart feels. Sara reminds me of the baby I lost. Think of it fondly when ever I hear this song
As someone who occasionally writes, I know many of us do understand how our greatest writing comes from those deepest times of emotion and hurt. Sara certainly has spoken to millions in a myriad of ways, right where we are in that moment.
It's cathartic, that resonates from the inside out to gravitate to other people externall this helps many vent at times more than anything else can, the words you may not be able to say to someone else can become a song. It puts the muse in music
When I first heard this song at age 15 it was very confusing and made no sense. The song is called Sara but Stevie is singing about a man that she fell in love with. Then she sings about Sara who is the poet in her heart. When Sara builds her house, she's going to call Stevie and Stevie is going to go live with her. Then the song really gets bizzare and confusing when she sings about a starling that flew for days and a heartbeat that never died. I always wondered what that was all about?Years later after finding out what the song was really about, now it makes perfect sense. Maybe someday Stevie will release the original 12 verse 16 minute song.
So glad you did this song. It's my favorite FM song as well. It's haunting and makes me want to cry whenever I hear it and I'm not so sure why. Thanks.
@@marktait2371 there’s a RUclips video with a live version of _The Chain_ I think from the _Mirage_ tour where Lindsey and Stevie are literally shouting the lyrics at each other. During Linsey’s guitar solo he’s yelling ‘cmon to Mick and Mick won’t look him in the eyes. Lindsey is rage playing the solo, and I think the only thing keeping the strings from breaking is that he wasn’t using a pick.

Beautiful job Professor! You covering "The Agony and the Ecstasy" of Fleetwood Mac is spot on! Thank you for relating your loss of a GREAT love in your life. I suffered such a loss 31 years ago and Rock Music was (and still is) the soothing Balm to that hurt. My song was The Greatest Love by Joe South covered by the late, great Billy Joe Royal. Love what you do Professor! Carry On!❤
I was a record store manager when Tusk was released. We were bulk shipped a large total of albums and tapes. It was a double-album set priced at 16.99 .....and we couldn't sell it at that price then.
Yep I remember that Christmas seeing it in the record store for $12.98, pretty pricey for a 12-year-old back then. I did get the Donna Summer Greatest Hits 2-LP set for $9.98 as a gift to myself!😉
Sara has always been one of my favorite songs, not only by Fleetwood Mac, but also by Starship. I'm not sure why that name has been ingrained in my heart but it has. Fleetwood Mac's version has that haunting melody and now I know so much more about the reasons for the song, or at least the suspected reasons. Thanks for this.
I liked the song "Think About Me". The more I learn about Stevie Nicks, the more dangerous I think she would have been to be around, on a personal level.
This entire album spoke to me when it came out. It felt like it totally captured the personal turbulence I was living through in my life. I would play the entire album in the living room in the dark after my daughter was asleep. And often I would play 'Sara' multiple times before completing the album because it felt like there were so many layers that were personal to me. I love Fleetwood Mac, but this is the album that to this day is my favorite
Fleetwood Mac needs a 3 season show made about them. The first season would be about the Peter Green Era. The 2nd would be a Welch intro, but quickly move into the self titled album and go all the way through Rumours. The 3rd season would start with Tusk, and end with the live concert DVD with the Rumours lineup. I think it was called "The Dance".
I heard Sara for the first time driving my car by myself on a clear winter night. There was almost zero traffic & then this song came on KGON-FM in Portland, Oregon. It blew my mind hearding this goddess on a beautiful calm night. I remember looking up at the sky & just loving that combination. Thank you, Stevie & FWM for all your contributions to more than music.
My girlfriend's name is Sara and this song was overwhelming for me during several times when I thought that it was over between us. The music is so incredibly beautiful and the heartbreak is so vivid. 😢
Yay! Another one of his favorite songs of all time! He's up to 103 by now! But....I can't hold that against the Professor. I have at least 1000 favorite songs of All Time. Gotta love music!
I don't know how to react to this .But Sarah is one of the best songs ever made. And Fleetwood Mac , both of them , with and without the women has always been in my life, with too many incredible songs to name. From bluesband to rock band with magical harmonies. I can hardly describe how much their music meant for me,Of course , Stones, Zeppelin, and the bands from Seattle were brilliant and I've loved them dearly but Rumours esp.were different category. So much emotions .BrilliantmBeautyful and purely magical . Rumours is by far the best album wver made by anyone. And you described everything beautyfully. I fet it and share it with you.
I read (or saw an interview) some time ago that Richard Dashut and/or Ken Caillet had spent hours mixing Tusk, had it sounding really great, when Lindsey came in coked up, and starting turning every EQ knob! Said he turned some of them almost 90 degrees from where they had them because he didn't want it to sound anything like Rumours. The album still sounds great, but I would love to hear the mix Dashut and Caillet had made before he changed it. Buckingham is a brilliant songwriter, guitarist, and producer. Fleetwood Mac were really lucky when they got him in the band, and they all knew it.
They didn't mix the album - they hadn't even started to record yet and that's where the difference was in arrangements, uses of instrumentation and recording techniques. Ken had just set up the board when Lindsey came in and turned the knobs. For some deluded reason Ken thought he was in charge, he never was, not on Tusk and not on Rumours before it and to this day he behaves as if Lindsey personally robbed him of a second Rumours while at the same time reluctantly proclaiming him a genius. Ken was primarily an engineer. The band was always the main producer and in the band that meant Lindsey. When he learned to engineer by Tango they got rid of Ken. Ken acts as if Lindsey did it all on his own and bullied the rest. Lindsey had been writing new material during the Rumours tour influenced by New Wave & Punk. He told Mick he was thinking of doing a solo album. Mick told him he didn't need to do that - he could be creative within the band - Hence Tusk. Only when it didn't sell like Rumours did Mick and the band turn on him so we got back to basics Mirage. Now Mick says Tusk is his favorite album along with Then Play On.
@@caps689 In other words, Ken is a shit talker? Lol. That makes sense. I saw a video not long ago where they were trying to recreate the sound of Rumours in a studio. Ken was there acting like the big shot producer.
Great story PoR. One of my favorite bands and one of my favorite singers. I had Tusk the album and 8-track, which I played in my sports car, when I visited my brother or sister. Both lived hours away different places. Tusk was great to play when driving after working all night and traveling in the morning. Leave from work, take the top off, put in front under the hood, engine behind me, throw in the 8-track, and take off, being 3 hours one way or 5 hours the other, in the late 70s and early 80s.
I named my daughter Rhiannon....I always told myself I would name my little girl Rhiannon....I saw them in Santa Monica , in 1972. The Bare Trees era ..
I have always loved that opening line of wait a minute baby stay with me a while. Maybe the best opening of any Fleetwood song.Stevie is such a great songwriter and she definitely lived her lyrics. Sara is definitely the best song on Tusk which is saying a lot for a 20 track Fleetwood Mac album. I wanna go back to these times if only for a day. Great episode professor!
I didn't know that song and I'm not a massive Fleetwood Mac fan. But it's an amazing story behind the song. I never realised quite how complex and even traumatising their story was. Thanks for the video.
My favorite Fleetwood Mac song. I remember being really young and listening to it on the radio both in vehicles and at home on my boom box. The music and rhythm were just magical.
My memories of Fleetwood Mac are bascially the video for Tusk, where they're sitting behind the first base dugout at Dodger Stadium just hanging out while the USC Marching Band Plays and marches into the Stadium. I also remember the song Hold Over me and the video; which was played on MTV a lot when I was a kid.
That last bit was as personal as I have heard you get. Sorry for your loss, and glad that you had this song to help you through the pain.. Its not always just about keeping the music alive.. but the people and experiences that we had along with it.
I’d never realized how beautifully and painfully relatable this song could be to me until I watched this. Thank you for this story. I’ll listen to this with a very different heart after learning what it means.
There were so many great songs on Tusk. All of Stevie's songs were outstanding, with Sara obviously leading the way. I think if you eliminated about 6 of Lindsey's overly experimental tracks, Tusk would have been recognized as a great album in its own right.
I was on a road trip to Florida with my parents when I was 17. This song was played quite a bit during this time. I loved the song. I was lonely one night in a bar and saw this song on the jukebox. "Where everyone would love to drown".
My favorite Fleetwood Mac song Sara. Stevie Nicks is one of the best female singer's in my opinion. Lindsey Buckingham is one of my favorite guitar players.
Someone needs to make a movie about Fleetwood Mac. I’d love to hear it from John’s point of view since he tended to stay in the background on and off the stage.
I'd also known the stories about their entanglements. When "Tango" was being released in 1987, MTV even rehashed a lot of those, and you can see references to their interpersonal histories in the video for "Little Lies".
@@jeffalbillar7625 Carol Hinton who had sent the lyrics to a poem called Sara to Warner Brothers in October 1978. But Stevie had recorded a demo in July that year.
Thank you so much Adam, #1 in our hearts indeed! Sara has been my fave Fleetwood Mac as well, from first listen. It’s incredible how this masterpiece emerged from multiple crucibles of pain…one wonders if it would exist any other way. Kudos for the research, well done!
Mick wasn't just still married to Jenny. He had remarried her just months earlier with Lindsey as his best man. Stevie specifically didn't want Lindsey to know. Mick told Lindsey behind her back and 3 days later she found out about Sara moving in with Mick. Mick was trying to save his ass when the bleep hit the fan. He was already afraid Lindsey would leave the band - hence Tusk instead of Lindsey's plan to make a solo album with his new music. If you think Lindsey was unbothered you haven't listened to TUSK, What Makes You Think You're The One, I Know I'm Not Wrong, The Ledge, Save Me A Place, Not That Funny or That's Enough For Me. Sara and Stevie became friends because Stevie was friends with Jim Recor - actually they were having an affair. Sara didn't find out until they were already close friends. That's why her marriage was damaged and that's why Jim called Stevie. Stevie feeling betrayed was the apex of hypocrisy for what she did to Jenny and Sara. Neither Stevie nor Mick were monogamous with each other. Probably why it blew over soon and they're birds of a feather buddies.
I am 26 weeks pregnant and the name of my baby girl will be Sara because of this amazing song. The line "there's a heartbeat and it never really died" always gets me...thank you professor for this video ❤
I can only find Lindsey Buckingham's behavior toward Stevie explicable by concluding he never stopped loving her and never forgave her for not loving him back.
@@vyviennI disagree. When you’re in love you naturally want the object of your affection to feel the exact same way toward you. The sad fact is that both Stevie & Lindsey’s egos were outsized & that created a sense of competition between them. Stevie in particular benefitted from Lindsey’s production of her music. I think he truly understood what she wanted to convey & did his level best to bring her vision to reality. I truly believe Stevie is the great love of Lindsey’s life & when things didn’t work out for them, it broke him, hence his abusive behavior. I also think-in spite of Stevie’s mixed messages about him-that Lindsey is and always has been-the great love of Stevie’s life. Lindsey has said in interviews that he used to wonder what might have been, had they not joined Fleetwood Mac…would they have gotten married & had children??? We will never know…

I always knew it was a sad song but didn’t totally understand. Some of us have felt the deep pain of heartbreak, and this song and the explanation brings it flooding back. Anyway, I love what you do , Professor!!!
This song is so beautiful, I still listen to it. It's a great driving down the road with the windows down song.
Thanks!
I agree. I love the instrumental.
I used to love this song- still do, but now it’s different. My best friend, Sarah, took her life at the end of January. ‘Sara” was her favorite song that contained her name. I cry whenever I hear it 💔
One thing about Fleetwood Mac's song, they all have so much meaning. The songs written by Christine, Lindsey and Stevie are works of masterful art.
Never knew all the drama behind this band until a few years ago. All their music has so much more meaning now. Thank you for the back stories.
Thanks Debbie!
thank you, this video actually opened up a really cathartic cry session for me.
So sorry that happened.
That can never go away entirely. 😢
The mercy of time does move us away from things, though, despite their refusal to ever fully let us go.
Thanks for watching!
My older brother bought me this album for Christmas 1979. I haven't listened to it very much over the years, but I'm getting it out today due to your video.😊
Awesome!
Definitely has allot of underrated songs on it. Listen to Christine’s Brown Eyes,Stevie’s Sisters of the moon, Beautiful child. everyone expected another Rumors & it was a double album which made it twice as expensive that may have hurt sales.
@@snoops5581 Thanks!
@snoops5581 I love Beautiful Child, she played it in concert in 2004
@@rhiannon7163 That was supposed to be a song about then boyfriend Jimmy Iovine who was a small guy in stature.
From the first time I seen her on my mothers television set singing Edge of Seventeen in a red flowing outfit in the early 80's I was mesmerized and I've been in love with her voice ever since.
Thanks Professor! That was a great story and band!! We were so lucky to experience it!🤘🔥
One of the greatest ever!
It's accurate, but not the entirety of it."
Yes, she acknowledges that is part of the meaning but also clearly states there is more to the meaning. In other interviews (some of which Prof of Rock quotes) she explains other aspects of the meaning including her affair with Mick, her friend, her muse, her alter ego, etc. It's a complex song with complex meaning that only Stevie will ever fully know the true meaning of.

I remember the slew of "Sara" songs that were out back then (this one, Hall & Oates, Starship)... I liked all of them!
My sister's name is Sarah... Spelled with an H.
Sara Smile is classic
Yeah, I believe they were all written about the same Sara. She really got around back then.
@@nodangles6983good one! Haha!
I have a friend called Rhiannon, and her Sisters are called Stevie and Sara. Needless to say, her folks really dig this band! 😂
LOve it!
Fun fact... My first name is STEVEN. If I would've been a girl my parents were going to call me STEVIE.
Oops. 😆
Whenever I meet a Rhiannon I ask if their name is music related and it always has been.
Very cool!
This long running version of Fleetwood Mac had a great sound
to their songs over the years but I've been listening to the earlier
versions of the band before Stevie and Lindsay joined and I really
like all versions of Fleetwood Mac thanks for the memories.🎶🎶

What I love about Tusk is that it is such a bold and daring experimental statement from the hottest band of the late 70s and how do you follow a landmark album such as rumours you get one of the most wildest left turns in classic rock history the Christine McVie songs are gentle and comforting the Stevie Nicks songs are a mix of ballads and mid tempo rockers and we get to the crazy genius of the album Lindsey Buckingham's new wave and Brian Wilson and Eno inspired numbers which to me love them or hate them is why I love this album
I agree wholeheartedly. I wish they'd tried this later on in their career!
@@ProfessorofRock it should've been mirage as the follow up for rumours and tusk should've came in the 80s but it's fun to imagine what could've been
@@georgemathie8123 For sure!
Tusk just goes all over the place musically.
So sorry to hear about the love you lost. This song is so haunting, I just close my eyes every time I hear it, and flash back to those years.
Right?
I could even draw that image myself.
I’ve heard this song for years. When I hear it again I’m going to actually listen to it. This was a great episode! Thank you!
"Tusk" is such a great record. After one of the best-selling albums of all time, Fleetwood Mac released an art record. What balls. My favorite: "What Makes You Think You're The One?"
It’s an excellent record with new ideas. Love it. 👍
"Rumours" is the undisputed classic-- but if I could keep only one Mac record from the "new" band, "Tusk" is IT.
Pearl Jam did the same after Ten, they stop making videos & made a less commercial record Vs., even though it sold well.
The song Hypnotized is an underappreciated gem by Fleetwood Mac.
So very true. Hypnotized is one of my all time fave's. Great call William.
Agreed. Love it.
That's right
One of my faves, too.
@@10000Times !

She and her brother bought me the Stevie Nicks Barbie this past Christmas.
Professor I’m so sorry for the loss of your great love, what a heart breaking story. This song just brings out so many emotions that stir the soul. 😢
Thank you for another great episode!
It's utterly beautiful and captivating, like Stevie herself.
I have heard that both Lindsey Buckingham and Tom Petty hated Henley with her and thought he was way too controlling. And I gotta say, when one of your best guy friends and the ex that has legitimate beef with you hate a guy for you, it's time to listen!
From what I can gather from Fil's channel he's not a nice guy, not to mention miming his way through Eagles concerts for the last two years.
'Too controlling' seems very understated considering his seeming penchant to copyright strike anything remotely Eagles-related.
That has got to be one of the most confusing jumble of words I've ever read in my life.
This has to be one of my favourite songs of all time. Thank you filling in the story behind the song.
POR, how do you come up with these stories. These are the most interesting and informative stories on the internet. I know it’s been said before but it needs to be said again, you are the MAN when it comes to music info
Thank you dearly!
It's a deeply powerful song, for multiple reasons. I loved the music (esp. the piano) before I ever paid attention to the lyrics.
Professor... you never disappoint with your videos. You are a blessing to those of us who have a heart for music and story telling.
This is the band I've seen live 5 times. Wish I could see the '77 line up live one more time. RIP

So glad you did this song. It's my favorite FM song as well. It's haunting and makes me want to cry whenever I hear it and I'm not so sure why. Thanks.
In spite of all the turmoil, the music was _The Chain_ and that kept them together.

@@ProfessorofRock I always had the feeling that the song Angel was written about Mick
@@marktait2371 there’s a RUclips video with a live version of _The Chain_ I think from the _Mirage_ tour where Lindsey and Stevie are literally shouting the lyrics at each other. Carry On!❤
The mention of Jennifer Boyd in the video, made me think about Jennifer Juniper by Donovan. She was the inspiration for this song.
Thanks Catherine. Have a great Tuesday!

Jennifer Juniper. Say that 10 times fast!
I've never been a big FM fan, but Sara is by far one of my favorite songs ever recorded. It just keeps building to perfection.
You ain't wrong there.
This song takes me back to one of the happiest moments of my life, every time I hear it.
"Sara" is such a beautiful song, but I have to imagine that for awhile it was a knife twist to the gut to sing.
No kidding.
Those lyrics are packed.
Same for ''Go Your Own Way'', song about Stevie & Lindsey.

It blew my mind hearding this goddess on a beautiful calm night. I remember looking up at the sky & just loving that combination. Thank you, Stevie & FWM for all your contributions to more than music.

Gotta love music!
I had heard the story that song was inspired by her abortion. "In the sea of love, where everyone would love to drown". Very sad.

Thanks for commenting.
It’s really hard to listen closely to the lyrics.
Beautiful. I thought this would be boring but you gave the story depth.

I can only find Lindsey Buckingham's behavior toward Stevie explicable by concluding he never stopped loving her and never forgave her for not loving him back.
Which kind of makes him the perfect example of a narcissistic control freak. The man has issues.
We will never know…
You're giving me goosebumps again, Prof.
