Tomb Sentinels will spend upwards of eight hours preparing their uniform and rifle before each shift and everything has to be perfect. They will even use a ruler to make sure their pins/insignia are exactly where they are supposed to be and a lighter to get rid of the smallest stray thread. This inspection while it looks ceremonial is a real inspection and if some part of the Sentinel's uniform is incorrect they are silently dismissed back to the barracks (the Sargeant comes up on their left side instead of their right as usual and that's the signal they failed the inspection).
Perfection in everything they do is extremely important to the members of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, the Old Guard, the Army unit the Tomb Sentinels belong to. Every part of standing watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is perfectly choreographed. They take 21 perfect steps, face the tomb for 21 seconds, turn and stand for 21 seconds before taking 21 steps the other way and doing it again. They only break stride and step off the mat to admonish anyone being disrespectful (such as by speaking loudly) or trespassing in the cordoned off area of the tomb.
When Arlington is open they stand 30 minute watches in the summer and 1 hour watches in the winter and, I believe 1 hour watches at night before the changing of the guard (as seen partially here, the inspection is part of the ceremony). They stand watch and walk the mat 24/7/365 no matter the weather. Heat, cold, rain, snow, even hurricanes doesn't matter, they are standing watch and have since April 6, 1948. This is completely voluntary, in severe weather they are permitted to stand in a small shelter near the tomb or possibly retreat to a post underneath the viewing area but they choose to continue walking the mat. This shelter is also where the on duty Sentinel will stand during special ceremonies, such as a wreath laying or the ceremony held for Sentinels leaving the Guard.
Tomb Sentinels do not wear rank insignia while standing watch so that they do not out rank the unknown soldier in the tomb. The Sargeant (the person performing the inspection) will when leading the guard change but when they walk the mat themselves they wear a uniform with no rank insignia.
If you haven't I highly recommend you watch at least one of the many videos on this platform of the entire changing of the guard. It's an amazing and moving ceremony. Everything is perfectly timed and the two Sentinels (the one coming off watch and the one going on watch) and the Sargeant march perfectly in time even when not right beside each other. Their steps are so perfect you can literally see the rust stains in the concrete from the probably millions of perfect steps of the Sentinels over the many decades caused by the metal on the soles of their shoes.
Sentinels are considered the best of the best and while many may apply few are chosen for training and most will fail. They are required to know over 60 pages of information about the Tomb and Arlington National Cemetery word perfect and continuously train and practice when not standing watch or performing some other duty. The Tomb Sentinel Badge is the third rarest US Military badge (only the Army Astronaut badge and Military Horseman badge are rarer) with only 864 issued as of March 2024. It is also the only badge that can be revoked even after the individual leaves not only the Tomb Sentinels but even the military, by disgracing themselves in some way that brings dishonor on the Tomb.
These are also real soldiers, many of whom have seen actual combat or will when they leave the Sentinels, and they take their duty to the country and to the Tomb very seriously.
While the Tomb originally held four sets of remains (soldiers from WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War, it currently only holds the remains of the WWI soldier as modern technology allowed the others to be identified and relocated to a marked grave of their own. All four soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor by the president who presided over their funeral, the highest award in the US military, and the WWI soldier has also been awarded the Victoria Cross (highest award in British Armed Forces) and the highest awards of various other countries. The Tomb also doesn't just honor the soldier interred within, it honors every US soldier to fall in battle whose remains were not identified, whether they were returned to the US or if they are buried in a foreign cemetery under a headstone that says Unknown or their remains never located.
