When my mother got herself her last cat, she went to the Tierheim (animal shelter) and deliberately got an old cat that nobody else would take. She did not want to leave behind an animal that was used to her. I cared a lot about her cat when she was in the hospital. They both ended up dying within a week of each other.

      @rewboss  6 месяцев назад +26

The last cat my parents adopted was also an older rescue cat for precisely that reason: not only did they not want the cat to outlive them, but they were themselves quite old and wouldn't have been able to properly look after a very young cat.

Our cat Emmett passed away last year at the age of 16. He was a brown tabby that no one wanted. My wife was going to the shelter to adopt a Siamese (later named Lilly). The shelter implied that Emmett would have been euthanized if no one adopted him, so she got two cats for the price of one. He became a happy part of her life and then later mine when I married her. Emmett didn't look "pretty" or "cute" but he was a total sweetheart and was friendly to all strangers. I was honestly more upset about his passing than I have been for most humans.

Sorry to hear about Lilli, we lost our cat Pawl about the same time, Like Lilli he was a long-term stray that was hard to rehome. He bought us 7 years of joy before he passed away. I'm glad that you and your wife now have Anneliese. to keep Clyde Company. We just took in a kitten from the same shelter that Pawl came from and BOY is she proving to be the life of the party.

Andrew, you see my RUclips name? It was years ago I took up that pseudonym. Eisi was a tomcat who suddenly appeared in my yard. He had a white fur with a few black spots, so I named him "Eisi", like "Eisbär", or "polar bear" in English. I had a few other cats already, but Eisi was a diplomat, he never wanted to become a leader. He died some time ago, must be four or five years since, from "inner organ failure", the vet said, or maybe just from old age, as his real age could never be determined. Sometimes I think of him and wish he were here, but, oh!, here comes Ophelia! (That's her screen name. In reality, she's Lotta.)

    As a German:
If you have leftover physical toys etc to donate, go for it. If you're going to spend money to buy items to donate, please go ahead and just donate the money! Shelters can often get items cheaper in bulk, probably get way too much of some and not enough of other items, and receiving money gives them much more freedom for what they're going to use the money for. This goes for ANY charity you could donate to - money is always better, even if it might not feel as nice, warm and fuzzy as donating toys. BTW shelters might also have use for clean, old towels you'd otherwise throw away.
I used to volunteer for 3h a week at a local shelter when I studied, and found it quite a good experience that was valued by the shelter staff. The key point I think was that I did it for a long-ish time (1.5 years) and was dependable, so they didn't have to waste much time training them. It was a quite rewarding experience for me, getting to see cute animals every week and being thanked for my effort every single time by the staff, without fail. Mostly my job was cleaning cages for small animals (mice, rats, gerbils, rabbits etc). I didn't end up cuddling the animals much and got bitten a few times, but boy do I have hundreds of adorable pictures from that time.
We now adopted our own cats from a small rescue in the UK, which was a horribly long-winded process with honestly too much scrutiny, but at least we finally succeeded in the end.

My mother basically has her 2nd stray cat now, both were probably abondaned and at one point house cats. The first died of illness and was abused and had signs of old injuries, the second one was a stray that was caught, neutered and then ended up in my mothers household from a friends recommendation.
It should be noted that the first cat basically adopted us, sat under the balcony and demanded entry and after some time of getting to know each other basically was taken in forcefully and after about 6 months was finally relaxing. And yes, veterinarians and the shelter were involved, but they had no clue where this cat came from so we could keep him there was no chip either.

My sister is a photographer and regularily works with a couple who have a rescue organization for street-cats and -dogs from eastern Europe. The have contact with shelters there and regularily bring animals from there to their home here in Northern Hessen, Germany. My sister then gets to take pictures of them, she edits them and the rescuer-couple then upload them to their Facebook page. My sister has so far adopted three cats and a dog from those rescuers, and a friend of mine ha adopted three dogs and two cats from a different rescuer. Luckily there are plenty organizations like that here, and supporting them or a shelter is probably equally good.

I got so lucky. Got my Weimaraner through one of our vets at the agency.
The dog is utterly afraid of squirrels since he got abused by one as a puppy. The breeders didn't want to give him away to a hunter without thorough therapy and testing but eventually found him unfit as a working dog. My colleague caught the story when she was inspecting the kennels and called me immediately.
Nevertheless I was to underwent 3 months of painstaking scrutiny before they would legitimately sign the dog over to me.
IMO it's a good thing that a lot of shelters will also require a testing phase before they finally hand over the animal.

Given that cats do like to not be alone, much like humans in general too, do you think you might adopt another cat so that Clyde will have someone to be with her when you and your wife can't be home, and ease up a space at the shelter too?
I wanted to name the cat that my family adopted back in August Luna given the black fur she is covered in and also after one of the protagonists in one of my favourite manga series, but we went with a different name in the end.

We need to wait for Clyde to process the loss and for Lilli's smell to fade. Then we'll see if Clyde shows signs of depression or loneliness. The problem is that Clyde generally doesn't get along well with other cats, and we were surprised at how well he took to Lilli. Choosing the right companion for him isn't an easy task.

The greatest sadness of my life is being extremely allergic to cats. I LOVE these cuties sooo much! But despite trying several methods over more than 20 years, I just can't live with them. Luckily for me, my sister isn't bliged this way, lives just above me, and shares that love - maybe even more - so I get to get my fix every now and then by going up there for a few minutes.
I'm so thankful to you for being such a thoughtful care taker. Too many people are way too obsessed with kittens, in a world where older and ever so sweet and loving adult cats more than deserve to have a cozy home.
That being said, and with all the appreciation I have to shelters here in Germany: Some really take it a little too far. When my sister sought out to home another cat (to accompany her first one that was a private rescure), the "ladies" that came to assess the new home wouldn't accept anything but PERFECT conditions. No compromises. And they were on board, until our mom came over for a stint. Such as she was, she was (as sadly always) holding a lit cig and ashtray. My sister didn't smoke at all. But that mom's visit alone was enough to cause to elongate the process for several days, and my sis having to make excuses and promises to the point where she was close to say scheiß drauf.
I fully understand and VERY much appreciate that shelters look out for good homes. But letting "absolutists" make the call isn't helping anyone. Not the animals, nor those wanting to home them. Please, everyone, find some common ground.
That being said: I'll make sure to wire some cash to the shelter you mentioned. They appear to be good people with bad luck, deserving of all the help they can get. God speed!

Yeah, I had similar issues trying to adopt a pair of cats in London. All regular shelters we found only rehome cats to homes that will let them go outside, which is not only impossible in our apartment, but also just not advisable in central London IMO. And who is rich enough to own a private garden in central London for their cat?! We applied for a few cats that couldn't go outside for medical reasons and one shelter turned us away because they 'don't give cats to homes above the 3rd floor, because they might fall'.
The smaller rescue we eventually found after months of searching simply solved that issue by requiring us to prove that we secured the windows with cat safe screens, which we were very happy to do. It was a nightmare honestly. Now we are proud owners of a beautiful FIV+ cat and a tripod tortie, both of them are really sweet despite their street history.

I'm sorry for your loss. My mother-in-law has a similar looking tomcat that she adopted from a shelter, together with his mother who was also named Lilly. Our Lilly was a very slender, shy and traumatized cat, who must have died during the pandemic. She appeared to be sick, and we took her to the vet, but it was almost impossible to give her any medication because she was full of fear and viciously faught us when we approached her with the medicine. One day she didn't return from a stroll, and we can only imagine what happened. Thank you for the idea to ask for donations for the animal shelter that your Lilly came from.

Hope you don't mind me adding another way to help as well, as someone connected to charity projects, if there is a donations centre/shop in your area (my English isn't the best but basically a place which collects items for people with lower incomes) its worth checking if they accept pet supplies, only because it can help people who are less well off take care of the animals they love and whom provide comfort and emotional support.

Over the years we had a lot of "used" cats. All those cats were thankful creatures. Most of the cats come to us on an unusual way. My wife works for the church, and sometimes when elderly peoply die, their pets need a new home quick. The oldes cat we get this way was 18 years old and lived only 2 years here in the house. Getting old cats is sometimes hard, cause our old guests have often only a short stop for some years at our home and our cat friendly garden. Every time one goes, you lost a furry friend.

Cats prefer to live in groups? You might want to tell them that.
Had two cats, one that was an extrovert, the other an introvert. I had friends who even after years believed I owned but one cat as the other was always invisible, hiding away. After the first one died, the second one thrived unbelievably and is now almost always around me.
If the cats have already made friends in the shelter, that might be something entirely different, but cats are IMO not always happy about company.

Generally speaking, cats actually do tend to live in colonies. That's not to say that any two random cats will automatically get along together: Clyde has a very long list of requirements, and we were extremely fortunate with Lilli in that the chemistry just happened to be right.

I'm really sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace.
I'm going to share my cat story, maybe someone is interested.
My father had an cat allergie so no one was thinking about getting a cat, but that changed after my fatther sadly died in September 2008, two weeks before my third birthday. In early 2009, my mother went to the shelter with my brother and me, but said something arround the lines of: "Wir gucken uns nur um, wir nehmen kein Tier mit." which translates to "We're just gonna have a look, we won't take a pet with us." At the shelter, we went into a room with a few cats and one of them approached us immediately wanting to be cuddled. The lady at the shelter said: "Tja, den müssen Sie jetzt wohl mitnehmen." ("Now, you have to take him with you") and then proceeded to explain that he usually just hides anywhere since he fears people and one other cat always hits him (that cat also hit me, which is one of my earliest memories lol). So we went to the nearest pet store, bought the essentials for having a cat, drove back to the shelter and took him with us. Over the years, he became a pretty social cat, always beeing interested, who was at our house if we had visitors and trying to get cuddles from them. He always fought with another older cat in the Neighboorhood, but at one point, he just went to their house and instead of fighting, they just laid down next to eachother. A few days later, the other cat passed away. I think he could sense that and wanted to say goodbye to his friend and the fights propably werent "real" fights, just a duel between buddies. In February of 2022, he spent the night with me in my bed as he did sometimes, and when I was about to get up, he got up too, jumped down from the bed and then wasn't able to move is back legs anymore and you could tell that he was in a lot of pain. So my mum and I immediately rushed to the vet and they rold us, that a plug of blood builded up where the veins split into the legs and that we had two options: 1. A painful procedure over the span of weeks where he had to stay at the vet with a successrate of only arround 30% or 2. Euthanization. In tears, we both decided that the second option would be the better one, as we promised him in the car that won't be in pain anymore after the visit at the vet. I think he realized what was going on the moment my mom and I broke up in tears, as he stopped crying and just let us cuddle him one last time.
After growing up with him and spending my childhood as well as half of my teenage years with him, I'd say that I lost my best friend this day. My condolences to everyone who lost a pet. A pet is not just a pet, it's a family member and a good friend.

Oh and the 5 cases I know of where people got a cat from a shelter, they got a single one into a home where there was no cat.

In Germany, pet shops might not sell dogs and cats, but they definitely do sell bunnies, guinea pigs, rats, fish, all kinds of mice, hamsters and small birds. Even snakes I think. Shelters, on the other hand, sometimes are extremely picky about who can adopt a pet. They demand things like: the cat needs to be able to go outdoors (this leads to the cat sitting in a tiny cage at the shelter longer when they could have a whole house or at least a few rooms for themselves), that you can not be too old, that you do not work too many hours, maybe even that you do not live alone. It is reasonable to some extend but they tend to overdo it (overdoing everything is kind of a national disease here). I guess I would not be able to get a cat from a shelter because I work 24 hour shifts (about 2 to 3 a month) and I would never let a cat roam free for a multitude of reasons. So, the breeder it was for me. Had wonderful years with my expensive, purebreed furballs.

None of the shelters I have ever dealt with demand that all their cats have access to the outdoors: on the contrary, they distinguish between indoor cats and outdoor cats. When we got Lilli we were told she was an indoor cat, but this proved to be incorrect.

    • @MR-rj2qw
      @MR-rj2qw 6 месяцев назад +1

@@rewboss that is true. But whenever I checked at my local shelter, most of their cats were labeled as outdoor cats. I realize this is because they were able to go outside before they came to the shelter but I wonder if they would not adapt to the couch life. In the end, it does not matter as long as they get adopted. I just roll my eyes whenever I hear shelters complain that they have too many animals when at the same time it is not possible to meet their high standards as pet parents. I think they try to weed out the people who are just unprepared and will bring the cat or dog back for stupid reasons, but like I said, I too would probably not qualify.

Support your local shelter! At ours you can get a dog for an hour or two to give them a nice walk on the leash. It costs nothing and is healthy!

Before I was able to adopt my dog, right after moving into a new city I wanted to do so.
I wanted this because I missed the dogs of my parents and I hadn't much social contacts. So it would have been an absolute win-win-situation.
But the shelter required a membership in the local animal protection association for 25€/month.
So sadly I couldn't afford this.
By this time I hadn't much money thats why I couldn't also afford to own a dog.

We had (or still have?) a local cat shelter in our area, but unfortunately after the "main guy", he who really worked for the cats with his heart and soul, passed away, it seems like the ones who got in charge just took all the donations and simply did not care for all the cats properly. I do not know if they closed but it seemed like it was imminent after word got out about their, well, deceptive behaviour. Unfortunately a whole lot of the cats were too sick because of the malnourishment and non-caring :-(
I really do not know where there is another animal shelter around here, but at least I believe we here in Sweden have basicallybthe same regulations as in Germany, and you cannot buy pets in stores, and I think (at least I hope) we do not kill off healthy animals... I do know that dogs that are smuggled into the country unfortunately has to be put away which makes me angry.

my question is, what is more moral?
getting a pet through a pet shelter or from someone you know, who happens to have newborn kittens/stray cats they cannot take care of?

    • @rewboss
      @rewboss  6 месяцев назад +5

I don't think you can make a simple statement about which is more "moral": it depends on the exact situation. But if your acquaintance's cats will go to the shelter (or worse) if you don't adopt them, I would venture to say that both options are equally moral.

I'd say it depends how good you know "someone you know". In any doubt, I would prefer getting a pet from a pet shelter. They may question you about things you may not have considered yourself before, they usually know at least a bit about the pet and its behavior, the pets have probably gone through a screening/seen by a vet for possible health issues. So after all it would probably be safer and better for you and the pet.

Well, pet shops often sell small animals like rodents, rabbits, fish or reptiles. So it's not completely impossible to offer living animals.
