Hello, thank you very much for this video. I'm a physics teacher and I'll show the vidéo to my students tomorow. It answers a question I had. There is a resonance for L = lambda/2 and L = 3/4 lambda. In the second case, the tube is still close by the speaker but I works. It means that there is a minimum of pressure on the side of the speaker.
@emieldeb The reason the styrofoam pieces form a series of walls rather than simple humps has to do with the way the air in the tube moves around those pieces...Vortices form around each piece, and the most stable places for another piece are either in the same plane as the first, or a certain distance away. Google 'Kundt's Tube Striations' since I couldn't post the article link...
@xhpleon Foam goes flying when music is played because the motion of the air is chaotic, with no standing wave dominating over the long term...E. N. da C. Andrade was the one who discovered this idea of the ridges being formed by vortices. The paper is “On the Groupings and General Behaviour of Solid Particles under the Influence of Air Vibrations in Tubes”
@xhpleon First of all, pressure nodes are not displacement nodes...they are displacement antinodes. Second, at the pressure nodes the pressure is atmospheric, not zero, and the pressure at the pressure antinodes gets both higher and lower than at the nodes. Besides, if the location of the foam was a simple matter of getting sucked in, then there is no good reason for the small ridges that make up the overall trend. The foam location depends on the movement of the air, not the pressure.

This is an Interessengruppen point. I assume it is due to the movement of the speaker membrane which simulates the resonance condition of an open/closed tube. Of we consider the movement of the partiales close the smaller spacings, the movement of the membrane might have been at similar amplitudes.
Could you please explain what causes the smaller lines in the waves to form? I understand how the third harmonic forms 3 nodes for example, but what is controlling all the smaller barcode-like patterns?
Good question! I wonder the same thing I'm guessing it could be electrostatic forces arising from charging via friction... the nodes and antinodes are surely responsible for the larger trend. The fundamental wavelengths are much larger than the tiny displacement you are referring to, so I'll guess it is not due to them (nodes and antinodes)... even if they were from harmonic overtones, there would be evidence of larger gaps for various harmonics. I could be wrong :-/
That's because the velocity of the wave is constant, and only vary when you change the environment( v= lambda X frequency). So as the frequency goes up, the lambda gets smaller
It seems like you want to build your own tube. I built one myself and it’s quite easy. For the speaker: Since the the manufacturer’s informations are pretty much arbitrary, just use a speaker if a sufficient size (mine has a diameter if 13cm). It shouldn’t cost more than 20-30$. The length of the tube doesn’t matter much. If you use a different length, the frequencies with which you can generate the figures in the styrofoam will differ from what you see in the video. I‘d recommend a tube length of 1m-1.5m. But you will need a decent frequency generator with a strong enough output. If you use your cell phone and an amplifier, you will grill your speaker. I don’t know why, but I’m guessing it has something to do with blind currents.
Sir i tried making this using a flourescent tube .cutting both edges removing mercury. Placed a piston at one end and a speaker at other. Applied every audible frequency from hz to kh but the beads wouldn't move. What might be the reason ? Kundts tube is my final year bsc physics project topic. How can I make these thermocol beads move and measure length between nodes and determine velocity of sound . Please help
@auburnisaak1 No, sorry...though it seems several people have done it with a related demo (Ruben's Tube), so it definitely could be interesting...If you do it, post it! It looks like it's one of the few things that youtube actually doesn't have!
Stepping up frequencies to the ultimate limit is only possible in imagination of the superimposed wave-particle positioning 1-0-infinity probability limit, which is the circumstance of the "Full Message" of holography. So the inside-outside presence of an e-Pi-i Apature distributed in absolute zero-infinity transverse trancendental sync-duration harmonic is at least comprehensible from this simple demonstration device.., when you think it through the due process expected of a Math-Physics Researcher. Because, raising the frequency of the tube is what is done in Accelerators like the LHC, which we all know has a limit of construction that ends in making a Black Hole, a Singularity wrapped up in zero-infinity frequency range vibration, or the ultimate Reciproction-recirculation positioning of holography that leads directly to the conclusion that the Universe is Holographic Principle Imagery projection-drawing in Black-body Superspin AM-FM Communication In-form-ation. If you can navigate your way to recognise Euler's e-Pi-i 1-0-infinity instantaneous trancendental, spin-spiral cross-sectional interference dimensionality, that is the Observable constant creation connection exemplified in the demonstration device shown. (By observation, the theory of the supposed Big Bang, [a half-truth picture extracted from Actuality], is unsubstantiated)
1:57 - that's not 179hz, sounds more like around 150ish. The others sounded off as well, but just so happen to know that 179hz is just slightly higher than the note "F", and yet the sound (coming out of my speakers at least) was closer t D#
I have an idea for a potential industrial use for this that could mitigate some significant environmental damages caused by the mining industry. If yur interested in testing the theory using your apparatus, here it is. If you do it, I'd like to know the results. Take a dry sample of black sand gold ore concentrates and place them in the tube. You can find "paydirt" online for less than $20. Play around with the frequencies and angle of the tube to see if you can get the gold particles to separate from the rest of the pile. Maybe oscillate freqs?? If you can accomplish this, you have a real winner....... just a matter of engineering a system from that point. That's what I do.

well my physics teacher told they use talcum powder... does that work too?
But shouldn't the small peaks be the actual waves as the wavelength should be significantly small as compared to the larger waves

Hi. At 1:38, after you're set the frequency, what did you do to change the speaker's end from a closed end to an open end?

Does this tube have open ends at both ends for first two frequencies? That way ends behave like displacement anti nodes and pieces will fly off.
