The point of Clarice getting chastised about not checking the corners, is due to it was in HER zone. Her partner did what he was supposed to do when entering and had the main assailant covered, but Clarice endangered the mission by not fulfilling her complete responsibilities...by not checking the corner, the assailants can take her out, creating a casualty that wasn't necessary.

It didn't have any nominees for Best Actor, so it wasn't even possible for it to win the Big Five after the nominations were announced. It did however receive four nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress (two in each category). Pretty sure it's the only film in history to receive four acting nominations for women. There are only three movies in history to win the Big Five Oscars: The Silence of the Lambs (1991), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and It Happened One Night (1934). This might be a controversial take, but I think Mads is every bit as good as Hopkins in the role. It's not only cleverly written, it is stunningly gorgeous, the sets are unbelievable. The casting is all fantastic, especially Chilton. Every episode feels like a movie. I wish all my favorite reaction channels would react to it.
The framing of scenes with Jodi Foster was done to show she was in over her head. You have remember she was still a trainee, Clairce is a POV character and severing as the Avatar for the audience. As always Micky is reading too deeply into something he doesn't fully understand, When clearing a room you are responsible for your own Zone which she fails to do because she's still in Training!!! It wasn't a way to show she was some how less than as a woman it was to emphasize SHE'S STILL LEARNING THE ROPES BECAUSE SHE'S A TRAINEE!!!! This is a basic storytelling tropes its not rocket science and you don't need to dig that deep. You establish she's bad at something then when you get to the showdown with Buffalo Bill the scene is more intense playing into what Pat pointed out she she wasn't clearing the rooms right and now you earn your victory when she defeats the villian and is rewarded at the end.
When Hannibal says “love your suit.” To the senator i think maybe he is implying that she is more concerned with her appearance and image and not so much about her daughter
This movie is not for everyone. Legendary film critic Gene Siskel - of Siskel & Ebert - despised this film, and panned the writing, acting, and directing. Everyone he critiqued, won the Oscar.
I'm pretty sure he hated every classic film that was released when he was around, and praised every middle of the road, forgotten piece of crap he saw. Probably the critic who was the most out of touch with audiences in history.
Don't know about this scene specifically, however many of the extras in this movie weren't even actors, they were crew who got roped into double-duty. Hopefully they got payed extra for appearing on screen.
10:33 Mickey look at it this way.. the Male Agent had his firearm drawn on the main perp, Starling as his partner has the responsibility to clear the corners while he’s preoccupied. So fun fact, the asylum prison corridor set is actually located at the Hollywood Museum in Los Angeles, and you can walk through it and into Hannibal's cell. The chair used by Jodie Foster is actually much shorter than it seems. I got to walk through it once because my graduation from makeup school was held in the building. The whole Dungeon of Doom exhibit is pretty neat really.
19:11 If you’ve ever been around a rotting, decomposing body you’ll appreciate putting some Vics or Vaseline under your nose. The chemical particles will cling to your nasal passages, and you’ll be smelling dead bodies for days/weeks. The salve helps to capture the particles and it avoids the smell. I did mortuary work and search and recovery. Bodies decompose very very fast.

I believe earlier they show you that Clarice is the fastest in her class, and later in the movie we see her reflex at the end and gets the drop in Jame Gumb. And she was at fault for not clearing the room in that exercise. You're meant to clear the side of the room you enter. So she's good, but still learning. EDIT: also i believe Clarice in the books does kinda date that bug guy who was staring. don't quote me on that though
Bug guy was sweet, showed genuine interest in Clarice, and asked her out for hamburgers. In the book it is implied they're dating at the time of her graduation.

The first time we meet Hannibal Lecter is in the 1986 movie "Manhunter" played by Brian Cox and directed by Michael Mann (Well worth watching). It was remade as "Red Dragon"
Lol, is so funny comparing younger peoples perspective when watching older movies. Mickey was surprised there were no cameras in the room where Hannibal escaped the cage. It was the early 90s, there were just simply not a lot of cameras. It’s funny how what’s acceptable can change so quickly. I remember hearing about cctv all of Europe and thinking that’s crazy, that can never happen in America, but here we are.
Navi: why do they keep calling him Dr Basically Hannibal: It's Dr. Evil, I didn't spend six years in Evil Medical School to be called "mister," thank you very much.
Yeah, regardless of what anyone might think of him, and his actions, he still earned his doctorate. It’s also a matter of respect, and courtesy, which Dr. Lecter values. He may consider himself above a great many petty things, but he still seems susceptible to some degree of flattery (as long as he detects the proper sincerity behind it). Is he always aware of that susceptibility? Honestly, I’m not sure.
My brother in law is very jumpy, and rarely watches horror movies. We convinced him to watch SoTL, with the lights off. Knowing the basement scene was coming up, I sat silently in the kitchen for half an hour so that he could forget I was there. When the basement light shut off, and Bill was about to reach his hands around the back of Clarice’s face, I snuck up behind him and timed it just right to reach my hands around his peripheral vision. Years of watching him play basketball, and I had never seen him jump that high. 🤣🤣🤣 Took him 20 minutes to calm down enough to finish the movie. I never scared him again. Figured there was no topping that.
As always mickey trying to act like he knows it all n always right. clarice failed, her partner is covering him she should check all sides when entering a room basic COD mindset!
33:43 - If I recall correctly, Hannibal Lecter was a trauma surgeon before he became a psychologist. He's also depicted as being a very skilled cook. So yes, skinning someone's face off with a pocket knife seems feasible. Had to be hell of a sharp knife and the mangled result was probably an intended and welcome side effect, so quite a bit of acceptable margin.
I’m convinced Ted Levine’s (the actor who played Buffalo bill) career was hurt due to how well he played buffalo bill. He was so effective and disturbing people couldn’t see him as anything else. Casting directors thought so at least
I don't know I think he was always destined to be a character actor/supporting player for the most part. I can't imagine a version of his career where he is a leading man or box office draw. At least he hasn't seemed to have much trouble finding consistent work.
@@williamroper5422 I hear you but you’d think such an iconic pop culture role & performance would’ve resulted in more noteworthy roles. I think a chunk of mainstream audiences were legitimately weirded out by him after Buffalo bill.
This films climax is super intense. I saw this film in the theatres in 1991 and people were literally hiding under the chairs of the patrons in front of them.
(About Hannibal) "I was expecting more out of him" Yeah, it's funny, isn't it? Hannibal is SUCH a compelling character, and has such an amazing presence in this movie, and yet, he's only in less than 15% of the movie. Anthony Hopkins got an Oscar for his performance, and he was barely in the movie. And yet, he's the first thing anyone thinks of when they think about this movie. Very iconic. Definitely earned that damn Oscar with that performance.
Idk, he was in almost half an hour of the movie, that's a good amount of time for a thriller to build up a villain. Buffalo Bill wasn't on screen nearly as much as Hopkins, and he is still so memorable and well-known. Everyone harps on how Anthony Hopkins didn't get much screen time, but he got a pretty standard amount in reality, and he deserved that Oscar for it, for sure.
25:24 A lot of people don't get that Lecter wasn't taken directly from that one scene to the airport. They said "clean him up and get him ready to go" before the airport scene. They got him off the thing, and later they put him in the thing again. He got the pen in between. 30:55 It was a temporary stay, they weren't planning on having him there for a long time.
Scott Glenn, the actor who plays Jack Crawford, plays Stick in "Daredevil." Also, the actress who plays Clarice's friend, Kasi Lemmons, is married to another actor on the show.
"It's odd seeing Anthony Hopkins in a scary role." Oddly, back in the 90s, for the audience it was the other way around. After this he did stuff like Remains of the Day and it was hard to shake Lecter from our minds when we saw him in anything else.
He's had a few scary roles but this one stands out. "Magic" is probably his second best scary role and it lags pretty far behind - although his voice work for the ventriloquist dummy is pretty cool.
Was worse for Ted Levine as Bill. It killed his entire career. Same thing happened to Geoffrey and Malfoy. They nuked their career by being too good in a particular role.
You're right chronologically, but (sticking with just the Hopkins franchise), Red Dragon is after Hannibal in release order. For this specific franchise, I feel like it's better to watch in that order. Although obviously read the books in order.
@@jenk4545 Due to it being set prior to Hannibal being arrested, yes. However several of the stories of the TV show are "remixes" of the various books and do not follow the books chronologically (for instance they adapted large parts of the book "Hannibal"). The alterations are due to the fact that the studio that owns the rights to the Clarice Starling character (and SotL) didn't want to play ball.
Mickey, she didn’t check her corners. She was in the wrong. When clearing rooms each person has their own section of fire, Clarice overstepped and was covering the section of fire of her partner (the guy to the right). She should have been covering the left section of fire and corner which was her responsibility. This is standard protocol for room clearing.

One point about the lack of cameras in Dr. Lector's mobile cage setup: This was 1991. Cameras were heavy, large, and difficult to setup. And the picture quality was awful compared to even a cheap GoPro today.
It's still wrong. Every coroner will tell you that. You need all your senses, yes, also your nose, to check the body. In case you notice some special smell that might be important.
@@cherrypi_bthis is true. Wounds are a specialty of mine and it’s amazing how much a few breaths will tell you when you walk in a room or uncover a person. Even so, I still used the Vicks lol. Being a psychiatrist (also an MD) Hannibal craved being able to psychoanalysis someone new after being locked up for so long. He was fascinated by Clarice. He ordered a second dinner purely to escape after observing their routine the first time. The security and that cell was put together fairly quick and not secure enough for someone of his intelligence. They underestimated him. It was only a temporary holding area. He had to make his escape quickly before they got better set up or moved him. In 1991 cameras were not everywhere.
"Why does he (Dr.Lecter) get newspapers?" In Thomas Harris ' source novel it's clarified Hannibal has full access to his newpaper and magazine subscriptions and voluminous mail correspondence thanks to his excellent legal representation (why he's in a hospital and not a state or federal penitentiary in the first place). This is much to the annoyance of the asylum staff who have to meticulously inspect his deliveries for dangerous contraband, remove staples, etc. Dr. Chilton may occasionally suspend Hannibal's deliveries as punishment or as a safety measure, all the more reason Chilton makes the top of his shit list lol. Enjoyed the reaction, thanks all! Fun fact: the FBI Director who calls Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) about the scam transfer offer made to Hannibal was played by recently departed King of the indie/B film industry Roger Corman, who gave director Jonathan Demme his start in the business.
Fun fact: the backing track in dungeon scene of Buffalo Bill dancing is “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus & Garvey, went kind of viral and movie collectors drove the prices into the stratosphere. Ebay prices for the album and later CD, go for over $300! But it’s also on the “Clerks II” movie soundtrack for under $15.
You guys HAVE to watch the Hannibal tv show. Its fantastic, Mads Mikkelsen does a fantastic job in portraying Hannibal in a different way. One of my favorite shows of all time.
Both The Silence of the Lambs and Mindhunter were both filmed in Pittsburgh. My office building is basically on the grounds of the hospital where Hannibal was held. The house at the end is now a bed and breakfast can stay at.
Oh I would be so down for a Hannibal series reaction. It's such a good show and there are not enough reactions to it. Mads Mikkelsen plays a different but amazing Hannibal.
Red Dragon is actually a better movie than Hannibal, but it's a prequel with the agent that caught Hannibal Lecter named Will Graham as the main character.
Saw this almost 30 years ago and the scenne where Clarice is in the room with the deputies staring at her while towering over her still lives with me. That and the face in the storage facility. Twice she goes in alone without backup, Clarice is literally the "let's split up, well cover more ground" type of character. Please watch The Mist next, it is SO good!
A little Easter egg: One of the reasons Hannibal was able to escape was his low heart rate. In the beginning, it was mentioned that Hannibal's heart rate never rose above 55 even when he ate the nurse's tongue. A true psychopath

Her partner did what he was supposed to do when entering and had the main assailant covered, but Clarice endangered the mission by not fulfilling her complete responsibilities...by not checking the corner, the assailants can take her out, creating a casualty that wasn't necessary.
It's one of those standard foreshadowing movie lessons that has a pay off later in the film.
A small but essential detail that also adds nuance to Clarice's character. She makes mistakes.
This film won the big 5 at the Oscars: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture
And Billy Crystal rolled out wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask to start off the Oscars.
Best actress too !
It didn't win a Supporting award. It's 2 acting award wins were for Lead.
It was the first movie to sweep the main categories since ALL ABOUT EVE in 1950.
@@RolandDeschain1 All About Eve won 6 Oscars - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound Recording.
Everything Everywhere All at Once came pretty close, but it fell one short and missed out on Best Actor. It wasn't even possible for it to win the Big Five, because there were no nominees from the film in the Best Actor category. It did however win the Oscars for both Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, and is the only film in history to win 6 above-the-line Oscars (Big Five + Best Supporting Actor/Actress), and one of only three films to win 3 out of the 4 acting awards.
18:30: I was laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face.
I scrolled down to make sure someone commented on this. My stomach hurt at her reaction! I had to watch it several times.
The look of horror on the Normies ‘ faces throughout the movie makes this a horror film.
And all the screaming!

Anthony Hopkins and Jodi Foster both won Oscars for their roles
The Hannibal tv show is AMAZING, definitely worth watching
It's criminal, that they didn't end that show properly.
@@Rollotomasi79 Given the circumstances, the ending could definitely have been worse. And so they got out of it gracefully. Many series are not so lucky.
Absolutely- the sequels/ prequels are pretty good too. Very enjoyable. The series, great. A couple other psychological thrillers ( with female leads), “The hand That Rocks the Cradle”, “Wild Things”, “Two Days in the Valley”, “Fatal Attraction”, “Basic Instinct “.
It's also WAY more bloody/disgusting than this movie. I personally think it's done well, not just gore for gore's sake, but it has to be said that if this movie made you squeamish at all I think the show will affect you far worse lol
@@JustForTheTunes I fully agree, some of the scenes get.... intense, but they are always thoughtful. One of the things I always like about this series is that they could very easily overdo it, to the point of ridiculousness, and yet the creators managed to maintain balance and intrigue.
The movies in chronological order: Hannibal Rising > Manhunter/Red Dragon > Silence of the Lambs > Hannibal
Manhunter is such a damn good movie. And the music. Heartbeat by Red 7 is so catchy.

I know the TV show Clarice is after Silence of the lambs, is it after Hannibal as well? I haven't watched Hannibal recent enough to remember anything of it.

18:35 "How bad can it be?" Bad bad, Navi. If the forensic police/mortician/person who works with dead bodies daily, preps that much and says I need Vicks or whatever that was, you definitely NEED it.
Highly recommend the TV series, it's so cleverly written and Mads Mikkelsen is phenomenal.
💯
It was more about his admiration for style and contempt for lower class attempts, like how he critiqued Clarice at the beginning.
Or about the fact Bill was making a suit...
This movie is not for everyone. Legendary film critic Gene Siskel - of Siskel & Ebert - despised this film, and panned the writing, acting, and directing. Everyone he critiqued, won the Oscar.
Sometimes Siskel’s reviews would make me wonder if he was on something, and what exactly that something was, so that I could avoid it.
I'm pretty sure he hated every classic film that was released when he was around, and praised every middle of the road, forgotten piece of crap he saw. Probably the critic who was the most out of touch with audiences in history.
Ebert was the better critic :)
I'm sure he would have loved Prometheus.
well the director never had success after this and Philadelphia
"We're extras. We're gonna act." 😂😂😂😂
Don't know about this scene specifically, however many of the extras in this movie weren't even actors,
they were crew who got roped into double-duty. Hopefully they got payed extra for appearing on screen.
80% just joking around, 20% talk about the movie
this movie does an incredible job at putting you in the shoes of a woman in a male dominated field, absolute masterclass in directing
10:33 Mickey look at it this way.. the Male Agent had his firearm drawn on the main perp, Starling as his partner has the responsibility to clear the corners while he’s preoccupied. Yes a lot of the writing and cinematography perfectly captured the patriarchal nature of the FBI and being “in a man’s world” but here this isn’t one of them. Her job was to clear the corners, we learned this in Dark Knight Rises and the movie SWAT

The show Hannibal is so good, I highly recommend it. Mads is perfect in it
that show is terrifying, made me paranoid about secret murderers everywhere
I'm not sure if this is a bold take, but I think Mads is as perfect in the role as Hopkins was.
Yeah they dont seem to understand just how bad it is.

Navi: why do they keep calling him Dr
Basically Hannibal: It's Dr.
Figured there was no topping that.
reminds me of when i was watching scream with my best friend (who isn’t big on scares) and i had my cousin call her from an unknown number

@@caylincoleman8758 Very true. He plays the character completely differently.

(About Hannibal) "I was expecting more out of him"
Yeah, it's funny, isn't it?
I have to insist you guys react to the Hannibal tv show now that you've mentioned it. Truly S-tier television
"I'm having an old friend for dinner." One of the great lines I cinema.

Holy crap that is Stick 😂 idk how I never noticed that
I learned that Anthony Hopkins based his Hannibal voice in part on Katharine Hepburn and I can never unhear it.
"It's odd seeing Anthony Hopkins in a scary role."
Oddly, back in the 90s, for the audience it was the other way around.
Trivia: Brian Cox was the first actor to play Hannibal Lecter. Michael Mann's 'Manhunter,' an adaptation of 'Red Dragon.'
as for the movies: the order is
Red Dragon
Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal (The movie, not the tv show)

You're right chronologically, but (sticking with just the Hopkins franchise), Red Dragon is after Hannibal in release order. For this specific franchise, I feel like it's better to watch in that order. Although obviously read the books in order.
Hannibal the TV show is a prequel to everything else.

For that matter, Memphis is pretty much the definition of Midsouth.

Hope you watch Hannibal the series version too. It starred Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐
“Bro Why you eatin people you so f’n smart” 😭
