- Of all of Mark Martin's runner up finishes, he says that 2002 hurt the most. He was so close and needed just so little to punch it through, and he's running out of time in his career, but fate had other plans. But, as his career begins to fade, one more chance emerges, and takes him to the highest of highs yet again as he enters the 3rd decade of his career.

If you're wondering where part 3 is at, my 1998 video effectively covers that season in its entirety, so I've folded it into this series. Retreading the topic would have just felt stale, imo.
You can watch part 3 here: ruclips.net/video/17Izl1tZXJA/видео.html
Mark: Can I...
Racing Gods: No
Racing Gods: But we'll let you get infuriatingly close
The racing gods were ruthless
Mark: I just want to win a darn crown jewel event
Mark: Gonna let me win a championship?
Racing Gods: No.
Mark: Then can I at least win the- Racing Gods: No.
i since listened to his podcast about his last few years. he had fun, meet a lot of good people. and raced-competed till he had nothing left to give. Man has 0 regrests. sure he wishes he won daytona or a championship. but he knows he had a great career. sadly in his own words he didnt think he was HOF worthy....... which blows me away. imo he raced against the best the sport has ever offered to date, dale sr, jr, stewart some seasons, jeff gordon ofc, few others. and yet mark consistantly competed and even won vs these guys week after week year after year decade after decade and most the time in lesser equipment....
NOO NOPE I’ll give Mark his well deserved due, he is most definitely the best driver to never win a championship, and maybe even the best driver never to win the Daytona 500, but Smoke makes that call a tough one. For all Mark was given, he did astonishing well. 4 wins in a row in 1993, fastest race ever run in 1997 at Talladega, and a career of length many drivers would kill for. He truly is one of the best of the best, and I might even say he is better than other 90s superstar and Ford driver, Dale Jarrett. Don’t get me wrong, DJ is amazing, but look at what Mark has to go through for his wins and then DJ, and I think it adds up quick why he is the greatest to never hoist the cup at seasons’ end.
6:14 "But aw he can't do that" The Legend Benny Parsons LOL!!
I've been a fan of BP since 1999 and I miss that man. RIP ol BP.
Benny like mark is a fan favorite
The way you write and tell this story is like a Greek tragedy. We know the ending. You've told us the ending at the beginning of Part 1. But still, hearing the way this video ends, part of me is pleading, "He must... Surely... The racing gods can't be so cruel..."
Mark is the peoples champion. And never will there be a man so respected
Mark is the best and he holds the greatest title that is the people's champion/ fans champion
Idk man, Kenseth taking out Logano was a people’s champion moment
@@ObservationofLimits Anyone taking out Logano deserves a Medal of Honor.
Christ, guy, you’re working my emotions with the sound editing at the end
This is one of your best videos ever. I feel your pain and anguish as a fan in the emotion you poor into your scripts. You are undoubtedly a Mark Martin fan and this video is so enjoyable! Listening to you over the past few weeks talk about Mark has really reminded me of how great a driver he really was. This next episode is going to hurt though. 2009 was the year I thought Mark was going to do it. Keep up the great work! I hope COVID hasn’t been kicking you in the rear with your shipping job that hard.

Thought it was a viagra joke tbh
So Mark’s championship hunt got
Hard?
No, it went up in smoke.
Am I allowed to say Mark came out flat when it really mattered?
Anyone else have any flaccid jokes they wanna make?
Viagra sponsored someone notorious for coming second. It writes itself.
He made part 3 8 months ago he is a genius
Who are you talking to
Kip He doesn’t have to be talking to anyone please don’t be such an asshole.
FlyingJay he asked a reasonable question and wasn’t rude about it
Red Ram true but I just hate how people judge others for talking to themselves or just talking.
I was just leaving a comment goodness y’all chill out seriously
I love the editing on this episode. Sterling’s introduction and the sort of Mark Martin montage at the end with the epic music. Great episode.
Slapshoe, I'm totally reliving history through you, listening to these Mark Martin offerings about Mark's career, I was driving then as well, a truck driver, working for a company based in Springdale AR. one of their favorite places to send me, to start or end my runs near their terminal, and my home in Mo, was Martins hometown of Searcy, AR., where, at the time on raceday, even CB radio chatter in the area was more concerned with Mark Martins racing, than where speed traps were on up the road. Good memories of one of Nascars greatest. Keep em coming.
Kickass 😂
He should have had that 2007 Daytona 500, still boggles my mind that day that they didn't. Newman's crash finish in 2020 and Martin's 2007 loss are the hardest to watch and take.
Should have? He could have if a had a spotter worth a damn. Didnt block Harvick when he had a chance .
I can think of another harder to watch and that I refuse to relive, but I feel your pain.
Honestly, makes it seem like the organization has a permanent grudge against him. Loses a championship because of a non-rule, years later, loses a crown event win because NASCAR decides to not enforce a rule
@@ObservationofLimits At least Mark Martin took it like a man. The man is a champion in who he is as a person and he is a driver. He may not have won a championship but he does have many other accolades in a great career. Biggest issue I had with Roush with Mark was they were too conservative when they needed to be aggressive. And sometimes too aggressive where they needed to be conservative so to speak.
@@rdaws73 And to this day, people despise Harvick for "stealing" Martin's Daytona 500 win.
This actually almost made me cry as sad as that is. I really wanted Mark to win a championship the more I look into it. The more I look, the more I see just how much work he has put in.
Mark Martin will forever be my favorite driver. 2009 was a magical year.
Ed Harris was born to play Mark Martin in a movie.
Dang, I forgot how good Marlin was for a minute. His '02 season really could be its own story of what could have been
Damn S1ap, that ending was incredible. Imma rewind it and watch it again it was so good
Man, this series is making me re-live my 20's. I used to live near Mark when he lived between high point and Greensboro. I remember when Matt was born, I remember Rachel, hung out with his nephew Christian Lovendahl.. the good ol days for sure. Just found my strohs light t-shirts the other day 😯
The 2007 Daytona 500 is my most painful non-death motorsports moment of all. I actually cried after that. A 22 year old man-child in a frat house crying because his guy lost by inches. I even had to look away when you showed the finish. I just can't.
Jesus Christ get a grip LOL
This series is superb S1ap, as a relative newcomer to following NASCAR, this has increased not only my knowledge of 80's and 90's NASCAR, but it has also increased my respect for Mark Martin
Mark Martin was my childhood favorite all the way into retirement. This series is everything I wanted.
one of these days, fox and NBC will pick up the documentaries you guys do and actually put them on TV. These are gold and thank you for what you do.
I wish my dad was still around to see these videos. He was a long-suffering Mark Martin fan :)
Wasn't the No Bull bonus the top 5 from the previous No Bull race? If you finished top 5 at 1 race, you were eligible for the next race. Enjoy your content. Keep it up.
That Daytona finish is just so heartbreaking
I raced with Stirlin Marlin on iRacing about a month ago. good kid. and speaking of the 2002 daytona 500. We were asking Stirlin about that race and Sterling said that he is glad he did that and had to pit because the rub would've blown the tire anyway.
Me being a hardcore prankster, and a class comedian, looking back on the early 2000s and my hardcore fandom of nascar, I'm actually surprised I didn't have any Mark Martin apparel and wear it to school once or twice just to turn heads...
2:00 Ohhh, so that's why Mark had the Mark Martin car in NASCAR Thunder 2002
Love this series!!!! Absolutely love it. The knowledge and quality of information and how you are presenting it all is brilliant.
Thank you
Mark's every 2nd or 3rd place finish is thousand times more respectable than Logano's fake chase championship.
Loving seeing these NASCAR cards from the early 2000s, nobody ever talks about NASCAR cards it seems and that was one of my favorite ways to express my fanhood from 02-15
The road to 100k , started on this channel with the 9 types of Winners video and have been hooked ever since . I've loved seeing all these motorsport youtube pages blow up . The future of motorsports is bright and it's in part due to amazing content creators like yourself.
Same video pulled me in
Loving these videos as a lifelong Mark Martin fan. Appreciate the “pulling a Quinn Houff” reference 👌🏽
This series is fantasic. PLEASE do more retrospective stuff on drivers. Could watch this all day
This series is absolutely so good dude. One of my favorite videos so far, and an amazing series. Awesome job man
As a Jeff Gordon fan I will say that when Mark won at Chicagoland and Jeff came in 2nd... any other driver I would have been fuming... but it’s Mark. I couldn’t be mad.
This series is SO GOOD. Thank you so much!
That was so freakin good. What an episode! Good job Slap and keep it up! I’m loving these so much!
Awesome! Can't wait for the epic conclusion of this series, S1ap! Your content is excellent, and honestly, I really have appreciated and enjoyed Mark Martin more thanks to it!
Pixar should hire you with the way you’re destroying my emotions over here. Mark was my favorite too. The amount of times I just had to look down and sigh after a piece of misfortune are too many to count.
Your use of foreshadowing with his choosing the number two for his car was brilliant. Well done brother
Mark will forever be the greatest drive to race NASCAR. he showed what a true winner is. a person who can loose but yet have a stoic pride that no one can touch.
That Ben Lesley intro was amazing
This feels like the Seattle Mariners SBNation video... And I absolutely love it.
As a Mark Martin fan this era was always the most painful imo. Seeing him come so close again to a championship, then seeing his teammates win it back to back years and then seeing them finish second in back to back years as Jimmie Johnson's era of dominance began, to Martin's retirement tease and shift to part time, the 2007 Daytona 500 finish..... and yeah the Viagra jokes. And as much as I loved Martin I despised Hendrick Motorsports. When he signed with Hendrick it really felt like he took a deal with the devil to win a championship. The epitome of if you can't beat 'em join 'em.
This stuff should be on tv its great!
Mark was favorite driver in the 90's as a kid and when this Dale Jr guy showed up in cup I basically had two favorite drivers at the same time from 2000-2010, it was a very weird and strange time having two drivers I cheered for almost equally but I loved it, good times :)
You are hands down, without a shadow of a doubt, the best nascar content creator on RUclips
This guy used SOPHIE and music from Jon Bois's 'Pretty Good'. He has some awesome taste.
Love this series, thank you! Watching Mark try and come up short was a big part of my childhood through the 90s and 2000s. I'll always consider him the best to never get the trophy.
If anything, this feels like a bigger shoutout to Sterling Marlin since this was essentially his only real chance at winning a championship, and nobody but us old fans remember him that well. Mark Martin, on the other hand, was prominent and successful enough that I think most fans put him in the superstar category. He was good enough long enough for me to see him as a champion. As a Jeff Gordon fan, I knew to watch out for that 6 car in the late 90s. It was a fantastic rivalry in my opinion. Eventually, by the 2000s, I did start to see Mark as an old guy, but that only made me appreciate him even more. I probably would've had him in my favorites if he weren't so negative in interviews. "Can you win the (2005) Daytona 500 in a back-up car?" "Absolutely not."
Being a Mark Martin fan was like being a Cub fan or Red Sox fan...except in the end they did win. Mark just had fate tell him to take a hike over and over again
Motorsport video essays.. Sign me up!
8:44 I’d completely forgot about that!
I am a huge Mark fan too. I remember when I went to my first race at Michigan in 2005. My family thought it would be nice to see him race before he retired. I was 8 or 9 so I feel ya when you say it was weird wearing a Viagra shirt in middle school haha. I wore it proudly
I think its fair to say this is your best video ever. Keep up the good work, Slap...
Previously, I held "The Greatest Championship Battle Ever..." as your best.
I was a Jerrett Fan but I now have a new found respect for Mark!
The production of this video combined with the presentation and info is amazing. Well done Slapshoe, this series is going to get so many new people into NASCAR.
I feel your pain my friend I absolutely love mark the best driver to never win a championship
I love that mark actually saved lives with a brand deal. That’s amazing.
Man I miss those early 2000s gen 4 cars and just overall excitement it was watching it back then. Excellent series, my dad was a big mark martin fan as well. Used to pull for him a lot. Great series looking forward to the next episode
That Sterling Marlin intro made Sterling Marlin the coolest driver ever.
That Viagra Car looked 🔥
Me: Viagra was sensored in the NASCAR video games and known as “The Mark Martin Ford”
NASCAR Video Games: You kids will understand why someday when you’re older...
Nascar Thunder 2004 had the car sponsored with the parent company Pfizer
@@biggallcaps Damn... that’s right...
I didn’t really pay much attention to NASCAR. It’s pretty unknown in Europe, but, one day one of your videos about a forgotten track drops into my news feed. Little did I know a southern native was lining me up with a rabbit hole and getting ready to push me down it. Now I’m bootlegging race broadcasts because Britain only gets 45 minute highlights and I’m on to my 2nd season on Heat. I’m holding you responsible for all of that.
Wow. Another episode. This is great content!
I teared up watching this video. Mark is a true sportsman, and I don't care that he didn't win the damned Championship. In my eyes he did it right and he is a Champion in life. Throughout the years he drove I only remember 4 times that he ever caused an accident. Your feelings mimics mine and how I felt those days. Wondered what would have been if he would have driven for another organization like Henricks. Wouldn't he be the 8th time Champion and remembered as the best driver ever driving in Cup? I wish him and his family all the best. Miss him a lot and sad he is not somehow involved anymore. But I am glad he is healthy, and enjoying life. I hope some how he reads this article and knows how much he is loved and missed by nation of his old fans.
5:55 you fail to mention the change to the iconic silver bullet paint job had to contribute to Sterlin's success
I really love the music on this one. Well done, you’re a gifted story teller S1ap
The Harvick Martin 500 battle makes me sad and angry to this day.
I was at that 2002 Coke 600 and got to see my favorite driver beat my second favorite driver (kenseth). It was incredible, I was 12 years old.
Here we go
You nailed it (again) Slap. Excellent production work by the way.
I cried when he lost the 07 500. I hated Kevin Harvick because he wrecked my favorite driver, Scott Riggs, at Texas the year prior, and Mark Martin was my second favorite driver.
Not gonna lie, of all the places I expected to hear SOPHIE, this was probably not one of them. Massive respect, RIP SOPHIE.
Mark will always be in my mind with Valvoline.
God DAMN that ending tho!!!!!
I guess you could say that the Kansas race _stalled_ his championship hopes
WHAT IN CARNATION SENPAI NOTICE ME
I see what you did there
These have been so awesome to listen to on Sunday mornings. Thanks for making these man!
Your vids are so poetic and enthralling which is why I love your channel!!
It’s amazing what you’ve done within the 2 years I’ve been subscribed my man! Congrats
What an awesome job on the video. Man I miss rooting for Mark on Sunday afternoons.
Mark Martin: I’m not throwing away my shot!
Universe: Well, actually...
The most cursed driver in nascar history as far as coming up just short or being "snookered"
Great content. Keep em’ comin’
These videos are literally the best👍🏼
As an Elliott fan, there is no driver I wanted to win more than his son than Mark Martin. Mark Martin is only second because of NASCAR. You've politely mentioned 'racing gods,' but honestly, no. He should be 3. 3 Championships. And I would have loved my driver finish right behind him and his neverending efforts. Mark Martin is the Duracell battery.
I'm a huge Mark Martin fan and this gave me goosebumps
One of the best videos you made and I can’t wait until next week
The 2002 season as a whole gives me so much pain
That Charlotte crash and interview HURT MY SOUL MANNNNNN😭. JJ Yeley was on my shit list from then on lol
You will always be one of the greats
If only the bit about Sterling Marlin finding out about his neck injury was put into this video. It's as epic as the name Sterling Marlin itself.
Sounds like that's the second-best story of that kind, after Buster Keaton going YEARS without realizing he had injured his neck.
Great video liked 👍🏁🏆
These videos just keep getting better and better
We need more uploads. While I do not watch NASCAR I watch the *shit* out of this channel.
Right on time!
nice?
ah a wonderful underrated season where anyone in the top 10 late in the season had a shot at the championship if the chips fell their way. once Stewart cleared Talladega he never looked back.
