Monte San Gabriele, WW1.

Nell'agosto 1917 il monte San Gabriele (m. 646) è stato teatro dell'undicesima battaglia dell'Isonzo che costò su queste pendici quasi 20.000 morti di entrambi gli eserciti. Nel corso di tale battaglia molti furono i reparti italiani che parteciparono all'offensiva tra cui i famosi "Arditi" che (dopo un bombardamento molto intenso per il quale erano state concentrate nel breve tratto tra il San Gabriele e il San Marco oltre 700 bocche da fuoco di medio e grosso calibro) riuscirono il 4 settembre 1917 a raggiungere la sommità del monte issandovi la bandiera italiana. La notte del 6 settembre si scatenò però la controffensiva del generale austro-ungarico Boroević che costrinse le regie truppe a ritirarsi di un centinaio di metri. Nei giorni seguenti, fino al 10 settembre 1917, il San Gabriele fu teatro di aspri combattimenti. Il Comando della 2ª Armata pensò di poter vincere la resistenza dell'Imperial Regio isolandoli con un nutrito bombardamento senza tregua, ma le truppe austroungariche riuscirono a resistere proteggendosi all'interno delle numerose gallerie scavate. Successivamente la cima del monte venne presa da entrambi gli schieramenti nove volte in cinque giorni. Nel video visiterò le caverne austroungariche (indicazione "Saniteta"), il monumento eretto nel 1918, in memoria dei caduti, dal 4° Reggimento dell'esercito nazionale ungherese "Honved" e la sommità del monte dove è stata eretta una torre belvedere che offre la possibilità di spaziare con la vista a 360 gradi sulla propaggine meridionale dell'altopiano della Bainsizza, sul Sabotino e sulla piana di Gorizia.

You can find three more similar monuments of the 4th Honveds: in Nova Vas, in San Martino del Carso and on the slopes of Monte San Michele. The latter can be reached from Via Peteano, it is not far from the junction to La Beccaccia to the direction of the museum on Monte San Michele.
The one nearby San Martino del Carso is in the close vicinity of the graveyard and is visible on Google Maps, while the one in Nova Vas is located on the western side of the village, where the streets makes a triangle. It is on the northern street. Visible on Streetview.
