  • Apologies for my mistake - the 'Standard class 4' was in fact the Ivatt class 4!
    A review of the lovely Bachmann 32-509 standard class 5
    Thanks for watching!

    Mine arrived this morning. It is incredibly noisy and quite slow. I will have to see how it is after running in. The BR Green looks wonderful on these!
    Update: I have never witnessed a loco crawl this well. Took it 2 ½ minutes to move 5 inches and didn't cut out once! It has sped up at a medium speed and is now quieter

      Ahh good luck mate - the motor in mine has burned out now, so fingers crossed yours is better!!

    "Rolls Royce of locomotives" as some called them.
    Bachmann did a spectacular job on this locomotive.

      Ahh really?? Well they were certainly one of the ultimate British steam developments! Yeah they did - fantastic for the price too!

      I think it had something to do with having the performance of a 'Black Five' with the more comfortable cab.
      It's better than their US range steam for that price, although I do love their 0-6-0s just for their overall look.

    Sam- the tender on this locomotive looks as though it has a mechanical coal pusher, something not often seen on locomotives but if I remember correctly it was employed on most of the Standard classes designed by Riddles post-war.
    Overall though, a lovely loco. I'm always impressed by Bachmann's efforts- I'm regretting not putting my name down for the new Brighton Atlantic preorder as I know they'll fly off the shelves the minute they're released! Ah well, keeping my eyes peeled for a kit (if all else fails a GNR C1 will do, they were the original design of the Brighton Atlantics- thanks Mr Marsh!)
    Grand video as always
    - Alex

    appart from the standard class 2 the standard class 5 is my favorite BR standard locomotive. Every week I go the the great central railway I see the standard class 5 they are restoring and im very excited to see it running.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Yeah I'd have to agree with you there - I think the 5 was the nicest of the standards, maybe barring the 9F!
      I saw the class 5 at the GCR too - it's in a video on Monday in fact!

      GCR 506 When I was young working at Derby Loco Works I had the pleasure of being hauled behind green painted 73068 from Derby to York many times. I logged it 95 MPH between Church Fenton and York too many times to be wrong. I was lucky enough to come across a Bachmann model of that very loco' a couple of years ago. It is on display in my lounge.

    Anyway trainspotting time i saw: your br standard class 7 Oliver Cromwell, your br standard 2, your br standard class 8 duke of Gloucester, your standard class 3mt, your standard class. your Bachmann ex lner b1.Now the Complete non standard loco was the Thompson b1 (haha see the link ;) The locomotives that aren't technically standard as such was the br 2mt and the duke of Gloucester.Now the reason of the class 8 not being standard is because of the extensive modifications that were needed done order to improve the loco's terrible coal efficiency and other problems.Loved the vid SamAnd CONGARTS 7000 SUBS well done you deserve it.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Very well done mate! And yes - the B1 was the non-standard, and arguably the Ivatt class 2 as well! Very good point about the class 8 though - though I think it's still reasonable to call it a standard, for the sake of argument!
      Thanks a lot mate - I'm really happy to have gotten here!! :D

    Loved the vid Sam just wanted to say.It is a common mistake but the standard class 5's did have a similar boiler design and wheel arrangement nut that's were the similarities end with the lms 5'sYou were correct with the br mod cons and different running plate but:Parts of the valve gear were Gresley designed they had wheels the size of a Thompson b1they had a Britannia chime whistle etc.Anyway sorry for my rant loved the vid :)

    My guess for the non-standard standard type loco was the unique BR Pacific 71000 Duke of Gloucester which did appear... with the LNER B1 being the odd one out. However there were 2 other LMR Ivatt designs which appeared, locos which were not standards but on which standard designs were based, they were the Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 on the centre road and Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 on a siding.

    The non-standard one was the Thompson B1, or at least, that's what I'm guessing you intended. Actually, the loco you called a "Standard 4" was actually an ex-LMS Ivatt Class 4!
    The arguable one was the green Ivatt 2, which was practically identical to the BR Standard Class 2.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Yeah that's right - and spot on, I didn't realise that was an Ivatt at the time - so you get bonus points there!
      And correct again - yeah I can't tell any difference between the Ivatt class 2 and the Br standard!
      All the best,
      Sam :)

    • @GWR-fd1up
      @GWR-fd1up 5 лет назад

      You probably know now but the difference between Std class 2s and Ivatt class 2s (apart from the latter pre dating the newer BR that replaced it) is that on the standard 2 the cab at the top slopes inwards and the tender is different. Also the number prefix is 78xxx rather than 46xxx which is for the ivatt 2.

  • @trainsontuesday
    @trainsontuesday 7 лет назад

    Now that's a loco I could get excited about. Perfect match with the coaches except as a class 5 it would (I think) be unusual to have a restaurant coach in the train. Great variation on Bullmans entrance. Rating was good but you didn't notice or mention
    the excessive air space between the loco and tender. They should be able to do better there. All in all very good. Thanks Sam. ....David.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks David! Really glad she got you excited - she did me too ;)
      That's very true - the gap is a little large, though there is the option to move it slightly closer, if you have more gentle layout curves - maybe it'll suit 3rd radius on the shorter setting? I'll have to try.
      All the best,
      Sam :)

    What upsets me is the way the firebox foundation extends far beyond the frame instead of being flush with it at the top. It’s a conspicuous error! The Bachmann 4MT 4-6-0 has the same fault

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 года назад +1

      Yeah it's noticeable - and consistent across quite a few locos! There's really no need for it!

      @@SamsTrains Thanks for replying👍 I have been wondering if that overhang exists in order to fit in the motor or a fly wheel. If the space is clear, then it would be possible to pare away the overhang and replace it with plasticard cut and bent to the right profile. I do like the 5MTs but in the meantime I’m waiting for Hornby or Heljan to do a more accurate one in this respect. Otherwise the Bachmann 5MT is every bit as good as you say it is!

    Hi Sam. I really enjoy watching you've videos I have learnt loads especially the service one's. I bought this model recently second hand from ebay but it doesn't run!! I have directly powered the motor and it runs fine. I have power going to the circuit board from the pickups but no power coming out of the circuit board to the motor. Have you ever known the circuit board to fail and if so were would I get one from or am I missing something simple here? Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Sam. Interesting review. Nice slow running I agree. Just one question have you checked why the running plate is bent? Is it a just a poor fit on the chassis or is there something more insidious going on (Mazak rot)?

    Strange, i don't any reason why the tender is so far from the loco. For me it looks it has the space to be as close as it supposed to, without limiting the minimum turn radius of the engine.

      Yeah - it is strange! There are two settings though - one is closer! Normally the closer setting is no good for second/third radius curves, but I might try it, since they look so far apart!

      Yes true but The sad thing is the ones passed down to me from my parents are the couplings before the model railroad companies used knuckle couplings. So I am now stuck with the Hornby couplings, knuckle couplings, and the couplings before the knuckle couplings.
