For your door I would have suggested putting it in place and lifting holding with packers or if your feeling fancy a great tool is a lifting tool called grabo primarily designed for tilers but can use for so much especially lifting awkward heavy things living the videos 👍🏻
Seen a few Defenders with the capping left bare metal, and it looks awesome. Especially if paired with bare capping along the top of the body tub. Cool resto-mod kind of look to it. Looks like those are already black though, which could also be a nice contrast against whatever final colour you go with.

Yeah good shout, was going backwards and forwards about keeping the galvanised bare or to get it painted.

Why didnt you just sit the door in place with some cardboard under it & then close the hinges against it and fit the bolts ? 🤔
