Let me know if you guys enjoy videos like this, I enjoy showing how to do things but jsut I feel like I am talking you all at the store.... ask any questions you like and Thanks for watching and huge shoutout to my friend tim for editing the video for me!!!!
kudos to you and tim!! this video is really entertaining yet informative
Yes, I love videos like this👏
No, I don't enjoy noise. In the slightest.
Hey! - i know im kinda late, but i hope you still will answer my question :) - i am about to buy the 1400 ARC dt swiss 62mm.. and replace it with the 54 tooth Ratchet. i am in doubt wether i should get the DT swiss ARC 1100 instead, cause it makes more noice? or is the 1400 enough, close enough to the 1100 on hub sound? what is your opinion on this? :)
Loved this, you turned bicycle maintenance/upgrade too "performance" art and comedy, laughed my nuts off and very informative thank you
haha I love it, thanks so much :) I tired to make it entertaining to watch :)
Just made this upgrade on my Roval Rapide CLX. I don't have a vice grip so using a wrench and a lot of effort still I could not remove the fixed ratchet. Took the removal tool and wheel to the bike shop and they removed it, plus put the bearing in the new ratchet and install the new one in the wheel. I did use a small amount of grease and have found no reduction of speed whatsoever. The sound is obnoxiously loud, even had one rider comment on the noise... but I like it that way. Thanks for the helpful video.
you are very welcome and thanks for watching
Honestly one of my favorite videos you've posted! Loved the face reveal. Keep up the great work.
hahah thanks!!! I will try to do more like this :)
I'm enjoying the new 240exp hub with 36T. Medium grease works great and no drag at all. Easy service
Buying original replacement DTSwiss bearing (Part# HSBXXX00N3741S) makes this whole install such a breeze and stress free. As a bonus you can switch back up to 36T in 10 minutes or less if needed.
This is very true, just get everything together
I thought about doing the same but after some research dt swiss says that it increases pedal kick back on a rear/full suspension bike. I believe that's on their website. They state that is better 36T instead of 54T for full suspension bikes. 🤔🤷♀️
But on a HT or road bike it's better engagement, so a good upgrade 👍
its all preference at the end of the day i rode the 54t on my sworks stumpy for the longest time...... no issues with it and I loved it
I've had the 54T on S-Works (54T comes standard) dual sus trail bike and cross country bike for years, jumping on every ride, and never experienced pedal kick back at all. This 54T ratchet system is exceptional in terms of performance. Then can add a set of ceramic hub bearings and you will have the absolute cream of the crop hubs, with very low rolling resistance.

I'm just sharing what the manufacturer and their engineering team state. It's a good reading for who is curious about this things like me 😂 (I'm a mechanical engineer myself). They also state that there is a probability of pedal kickback, but anyway I will not upgrade a new hub (like I was planning) and get the risk of getting worse suspension performance, but that's only my choice. I just thought I should share my findings about this subject. Best regards.
Great content! Been ages since your last how to video, keep them up!
lmao thanks so much!!
Just a couple of things GC;
You do know if that was a ceramic bearing and you hit it with a hammer, it can damage the bearing.
Also people take their bike to a shop so they use the right equipment that us home mechanics don't have.
Not hating just saying. 😉
ruclips.net/video/HdTTN5YLCRU/видео.html
Go to 3 minutes in, this is from dt Swiss channel directly, yes they have a punch made for it. But it’s the same concept and same impact. Thanks
@@GCPerformance18 fair enough. 💯🤦
Dude! this is the best bike video ever!!! Can't stop laughing! Keep up the good work buddy!
lmao thanks so much!!!
Hitting the bearing on the inner race to remove it..Ouch!! That often causes notchy feeling in the bearings...Glad yours were still silky smooth!
That is exactly how dt Swiss says to do it in there RUclips video too
videos are only getting better and better lol
thank you so much!!! :) I had fun making this video
Man I was dumbfounded yesterday. On a 2022 Specialized Epic Evo SWORKS I went to change out the ratchet from the 36t to the 54t. I never seen it setup like this and wondered what I could do.
lmao I know same here, first time going for this and this was a apin in the ass, but after getting the right tools it was much easier to do
I just have no idea. I can’t understand why someone wants their bike to be loud? Very offputting for me.
they enjoy just like people want louder car exhaust
For me it’s because of pedestrians. Does the job of a bell.
I think the same, they just are stupid people follow stupid trends
@@ricecrash5225 I've discovered that if you cycle and ring the bell, they typically start walking onto your path/line. Going very fast and stealthy does the job for me, especially if there are small children around, they're like magnets i tell you.
Thx, great lengthy video :) now I know how to silence the damn hub LOL, I guess we are different
Aw shit, yet again I end up here. LOL!
Hahahhaa
i was wondering, why would u want the hub 2 b louder? don't u need more energy 2 make a louder sound? The energy can only come at the expense of greater rolling resistance, right?
yes this is true, but the only time we come we here that is coming to a stop or a red light, we do not have downhill decents, so we do not to worry about drag, its more of a nich e hing
correction the CLX 's do not use 18 teeth , they use a 32tooth ratchet system. only the CL use a 18tooth.
yes u are right, I think I said that in the video but if i did not then I apologies
Thank you, I enjoyed it👏😎
thanks :)
smooth as glass
smooooooooooth baby
i really like your videos
thank you so much!!!! it really means a lot to me
The next question would be: Whats your level on Zwift my son GC Performance :)?
Question 2: What is the meaning of your tatto on the left arm?
zwift.... nothing lol I do not have zwift right now 18 is just a significant number in my life
So no grease at all? Or do you apply lightly?
apply lightly
Bottom out. That's what we like. - GC Performance
hahahah alwayys good to bottom out ;)
How about we discuss how many issues dt swiss is having with these 'heavily greased' exp hubs? That would be a great video. Happy to discuss my situation gc perf.
Do tell
@@DanTuber I was stranded on two separate rides with less than 400 miles on the hubs. The hub will not re-engage. It feels like your chain slipped off. Had to ship my wheel to DT Swiss in CO where they fixed it and sent it back. My biggest problem is their lack of transparency and are only helping customers who are having issues. There are a lot of these. Just Google dt swiss 240s exp issue. Looking at other comments I agree, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Yet they broke it.
@@freburt2772 too much grease is bad?
@@BurtTMacklin-fbi yes, too much can be bad and based on what I've read online and with talking with my lbs.... there is a good chance the single spring is getting stuck. The old hubs had two springs. Based on videos I've seen I also think there is some pre mature wear based on the dark gray color inside almost like metal that was grinded away. I have the 36 tooth and first couple weeks they were dead silent. Then became normal noisy. I thought that was weird.
@@freburt2772 Is it an EXP issue or just with the 240?
i dont now what hub i have it is from dtswiss but whith e 1 inside
nice job...helpful...funny too.
haha thanks!! I really enjoyed it
Why do not you use to knock the bering out of the rachet the tool you used to untight from the hub? Instead this 10s you put the tool and hit with the hammer.
because the tool is tapered and does not go in any further and it causes it to stop prematurly
2.10 PRESSING THE BALL BEARING INTO THE THREADED RATCHET
Carefully press the bearing into the ratchet with light hammer strokes on the outer ring of the ball bearing until the bearing protrudes 1 to 2 mm beyond the ratchet.
→ The ball bearing must not be pressed further into the ratchet.
...it will be pressed in by screwing the threaded ratchet into the hub shell - that prevents play!!!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it?! In all of my years of using Hugi DT Swiss. Why did they do this? I won't be using DT Swiss anymore for sure.
why? it doesnt seem that bad
Can i use the same ratchet removal tool with a Da Bomb Headspin Rear Hub? i have this one bearing that can't be removed unless i remove the ratchet ring.
I mean it doesnt hurt to try btu first I reach out to the company to see if they have a specific tool or a better alternative
Thanks for your Video. Ehe Ehe Ehe 😀 What fancy vise do you have there? Like is Out.
Hahaha thank you!!
@@GCPerformance18 hey me again :-D
Can you tell me what vise kind of vice this is.
do you have a link for me
I can not find him.
thank you :-)
I prefer wheels that don't make any noise at all. I have an older alloy Cannondale Synapse with Shimano wheels that don't make much noise. My new carbon wheeled bike makes a racket.
If you haven't, check out Onyx hubs.
yea those are so nice
there are a ton of options out there
I have a Zipp 176 hub (on a 303S), how do I upgrade the ratchet (degrees of engagement)?
I do not think you can, that comes with a paw engagment system so they do not allow it
Do you have to do all these things just to upgrade your rachet teeth from 36 to 54?
for the new dt swiss exp hubs yes lol, butif you ahve the older dt swiss then no
What about the recalled exp hubs made 2019-2020
Have you seen any of them and if so Would the 54 fix it
I havent had any with the recall on there or at least no consumers have brought them to my attention so I dont know
Can you use this upgrade on DT Swiss 350?
if its exp yes
Ummm... Not sure if no grease at all is a good idea
of ocurse notr
@@GCPerformance18 sorry didn't know it was only for the purpose of sound check!
that said, so for dt rachets, if no grease at all, how long/mileage would they usually last? I just cleaned out mine to make the hub louder with very little grease left inside now...
All fun and games until you're on a long descent. Then that noise becomes annoying as hell.
Also, what's the significance of "18" on your arm? ^^
hahahhaha yea I would shoot my self descending we have all flats here so they rarely go off, just a number that is significant to me :)
54T FTW
hell yea!!
I followed your method, but my ratchet seems to be stuck in the hub no matter how I turn the wheel. 6:09. I am pretty sure I rotated in the same direction as yours.
it needs to un thread out,,, so it is lefty loosy but you need a specific tool for it
@@GCPerformance18 yes I have the special tool. Manage to turn it out after trying for 6 hours. I am using like 150nm of body toque to make it happen.
Hello, the red washer goes right through the hub and stops against the bearing? Is there a gap between the bearing and the toothing? It happens to me that the red washer moves laterally and the ratchet jumps when pedaling, could that be the problem
Min 15:30
My rsl wheels have the dt swiss 240 ratchet exps on them. They are very quiet. It looks like they came with a lot of grease on them and they are brand new. Is it bad if thwy are over greased? Will they get louder the more i ride on them?
yes you can remove grease and it will get louder
I upgraded from a tubed roval alpinist wheelset to the clx which has the roval hub with the DT Swiss guts with the xdr exp. Can I still use my XDR freehub adapter (from previous DT Swiss 380 Hub) or is there a special one I need to get.
Ppl say louder the hub, fastest the wheels 😂
lmaoooo
do you know bearing size? 16×25×7mm???
18 minutes video to change a DT Swiss EXP ratchet when the orginal ratchet system took 18 seconds to change? Good way forward! But seriously I have this EXP hub with the 54t ratchet on my road bike and I don't regret spending the extra 150$ just for the sound.
I know. I really don’t like this new way at all. But it’s just companies trying to invovate even though there product was amazing as it.
@@GCPerformance18 Hub geeks will notice the bearing placement on the new EXP hubs is better for durability and stiffness. It's a bit paradoxal since it made the serviceability a whole lot more complicated.
@@onilovni1234 well even that, they claim it is better and stiffer and all this stuff but they have been having the issues with them where they weren’t engaging and people were pedaling with slippage.
Thoughts on a 54T and the need for one on a road bike? Does it reduce your speed when free wheeling or cause any reduction to speed?
yea I mean it will have more points of engagment so yes in theory but only for the amount of time freewheeling, so if you live in a mountain area and your decending then yes it might be annoying and slow you down but if you ride here and it is flat and its a hammerfest and the group dont slow down then there is no worry
I have a 54t on my rovals, which are on my venge and I coast past people on downhills that are pedaling so I’d say the drag isn’t much at all.
Can you put a ratchet on any bike wheel ?
no it is only certian hubs that are companionable with this systems
Will this work with my Walmart wheelset?
Lmao no
yes obnoxious more
How does it work ?
is the 54T ratchet Durable?
yes jsut as durable as the other ones, no issues with longevity
Maybe useful for e -bikes users...
lmao
Gc, do you reckon that the dt 180 exp is louder than the 240 exp when both are greased the same? I am looking for the less noise solution, but I would appreciate the weight saving of the 180 as well. Thanks.
I dont think it would be louder it doesnt make snese for it to be, as long as the same ratchets are in each hub they should sound similar
That 54 tooth should be called the Karen....
hahahhah that is fucked
Why????
because
I NEED THATT
11:25. would it kill ya to at least rest the ratchet teeth on a plastic block or something?
slamming those fine little teeth down on a vise top...not great my guy
you are correct sorry about that
Sik !!
This is one of the most painful videos Ive seen.
this is literally how dt swiss recommended to remove it as well on there service video for it
For the love of god, DO NOT COPY THIS METHOD. You will absolutely destroy your bearing.
That’s literally how dt Swiss has it on there RUclips page to get it off. They use a punch and I use a socket. Same size. There is no way to
Damage it, you duck. Now if you use a flat head or something like thag. Then yea
@@GCPerformance18 I’m sure they don’t reuse the bearing after they remove it
I guarantee you dented the race when you hammered the bearing out with a socket
Wwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnn
Prius owners could learn a thing or 2 , making their cars loud😛
hahahahha imagine owning a priius and getting a loud speaker exhaust
@@GCPerformance18 the Tesla plaid has a speaker and you can select a sound. Saw one using the Jetsons soundtrack
I'm all for a loud hub (love my 240 EXP hubs and 36t ratchets) but I still think talking about upgrading a road wheelset to 54 tooth should come with the disclaimer that it is significantly slower than the 36 tooth. There's a reason that NO road wheels or DT hubs are sold with the 54 tooth ratchets (not even road 180 hubs have 54 tooth).
I grabbed a 54 tooth upgrade kit from work and tried it in my previous 240 hubs like 2 years ago....I IMMEDIATELY put the 36 tooth back in because the added drag is drastically slower.
54 is for MTB. Not road wheels.
how often do you coast?? just keep pedaling
@@GCPerformance18 said like a true non-roadie. You're joking right? Lmao. Go do a 6 hour, 10,000ft road ride and "just keep pedaling". Haha.
So if people don't coast at all then what's the fascination with the 54tooth ratchets? You've made like 5 videos where you talk about it.
Haven’t noticed the drag yet on mine, is it like a couple watts loss or is it bigger and am I just not noticing it??
I coast past everyone on downhills with a 54t on my venge so 🤷🏻♂️
@@bosox801 just think, if you didn't have the 54t you could be going past them instead of coasting "with" them lol.
Hey, I'm just repeating what DT Swiss themselves have said regarding the 54t in road wheels. Again, there's a reason they don't offer ANY road wheel or hub with the 54t installed.
i have the rachet exp system 240s atm, i was thinking of going with the 54 cause 54
turns out tho that if u are a heavy rider ( crank power wise ), ive been told more than once that u can strip the smaller teeth
as for kickback on full suspension bikes, dt swiss are hypochondriacs about their company's reputation for engineering
and once recalled a ratchet kit because the finish on it wasnt up to snuff, and would become unpolished faster than was expected..
and it was possibly a performance loss..
also mang, yer hubs are too loud
silence my friend, silence is the mark of high engineering
contact is drag, drag is noise and noise is a sign of inefficiency
silence is golden, and i lose my mind over any sound my bike makes, from pawls to derailer teeth
which is why i got the 240s in the first place, because htey could be made silent :P
nice bike collection man
yea I mean it is all preference when it comes down to noise for the bike people like different things and that is all right, more noise you get more drag for sure, but that is only when not pedaling
I got 240s with 36t ratchet on the 32mm dicut oxic - they are ducking embarrassingly quiet, even without grease. Shame dt swiss…
remove all grease and try again lol
@@GCPerformance18 do you have any problems with reading mate?
