In this video:
Leo Major was a French Canadian man born in 1921. He probably didn’t think he was going to be more of a hero than the average soldier when he joined up with the Canadian Army at the start of World War II-supposedly he simply joined up because he wanted to show his father, with whom he had a shaky relationship, that he could do something to be proud of.

The fact that I'm Canadian and never learned about this guy in school is unacceptable!
Quebecois Rambo
If this Quebecois was an anglo-saxon, he would received 2-3 victoria-cross... fuck the Queen!
We're not surrounded, we're just in a target rich environment
Today I Found Out They say ' sometimes , the truth is stranger than fiction ' . And no Hollywood writer would dare create fiction of this sort of feats .
Man with balls massive enough to be qualified as binary stars system
Right?

super leo agree but i think its masive enough to qualify as dimensions

Robin the Rabbit The Leo Majorlaan! (I also live in Zwolle.)

You're a moron.
Wacht, welke wijk dan?
Leo Major: "As of this morning, there is no enemy presence in Zwolle."

"We got a dangerous recon mission sir."

@@realcanadiangirl64 im from canada and you forgot some stuff, we woulda said "eh oi fuck bud, just send the one eyed scout over to deal with em tings so we can watch hockey"
A Canadian puts the eh at the end, including making derisive retorts.
I’m Canadian, we studied the holocaust. How didn’t I learn about him till now? This guy needs to be in our textbooks. They don’t talk about Canada’s role in WWII enough
Leo Major kept his war life mostly secret, even from his family. It wasn't until DECADES later when a journalist knocked on the family home door to speak with Leo, did his family and the rest of Canada find out the extent of his bravery.
This dude should have a movie made about him.
They tried to get a script accepted but no one in hollywood accepted to make the movie. Apparently it was to unbelievable for them.
TheMajorStranger but action movies where heroes survive multiple explosions are realistic or people getting hit multiple times to the head and not getting koed(well in bocing that can happen but normally one hit to the head is enough for ko? I am so sad, i would have enjoyed watching a film about this unrealistic story...
Since its a Canadian it won't be made, did you see what they did to Argo? Its also why you'll never see the war of 1812 from the Canadian side (Brock and Tecumseh were just as badass as this guy).
TheMajorStranger hit the nail on the head. It's too unbelievable to be told as a true story, there's actually a fair amount of stories like this that don't get told in the way they should, Roy Benavidez comes to mind. These should be our popular heroes not celebrities, ball players, and fictional characters.
TheMajorStranger So was Hacksaw Ridge
Yep a hero! If my mind isn't doing me tricks his own family only found out in 1968 what he had done when a Dutch delegation finally found him after years of searching for him. After asking him why he kept all this to himself, he said something like "Well, nobody would believe me."
I read something similar from his son before he died of cancer.
In ways it is hard to believe all that he did. But we have records and such to prove it happened. As a Canadian this man is our badass of war. Should have got a VC in Korea.
@Sam Chau is wife didn't untill that moment and she's the one who asked this question!! he said "would you believe me?" she said no!😉
Nice and humble man I serve in the same unit same recon pletoon! 2R22R je me souviens

I believe it is the main boulevard of the town actually.
Hail to the king, Baby!
i wonder if he ever reached the rank of major. that would make him Major Major
Guy Wit a goat, in the Navy I knew a Midshipman Shipman, Seaman Spray, and Sergeant Major (Marine).
"Sergeant Major" I'm sure that confused new guys.
Seaman Spray? it must have been such a relief when he got a higher rank.
He was in my first barracks after Boot Camp. Every day liberty call was announced over the 1MC at 1600. Invariably, at 1550 we would hear, "Seaman Spray to the quarter deck. Seaman Spray."
Doug Moore I'm sure the new guys must have thought Sargent major made up his last name to fuck with them
The town of Zwolle was taken with no civilian or military casualties ...... Except for the German troops that had the misfortune to encounter Major!
Except for Major's partner.
Willie died on the outskirts of Zwolle so i don't think it counts
To quote an exchange from Hellsing abridged.
The Doctor: "Our soldiers are literally being slaughtered".
The Major: "Who gives a shit, they're Nazis"
The recon mission had casualties. The invasion of the city, slated for the next day with an initial artillery barrage, instead had no casualties due to the few the night before that prevented the need for artillery.
It was worded correctly, you guys are assuming he referred to the recon mission as part of the invasion
@@TP-tc7vp
Don't invasions usually start with some sort of recon?
If so, then it could be argued that the recon was the first step of the invasion.
This is not to say, of course, that all recon is part of an invasion, but that invasions do typically begin with some sort of recon.
Finally. Someone is talking about him
ikr
This bad ass soldier is buried in Longueuil south of Montreal. I need to pay respect to that guy.
Me too.
3 years ago you were the first RUclipsr to produce a video about him, others followed your lead. In the last few days the Quebec government -- given the renewed interest -- decided to name a major road after him. Thank you !
So this guy was basically ww2 punisher right lol cleared an entire battalion by himself

He isn’t even listed in the Canadian museum of war, last time I checked, I hope more people knowing about this amazing man will make him noticed.
You didn't notice the two massive cannon balls on display?
Yeah.. thats strange. I was at the museum in Ottawa
i've been told it's because he was for quebec independance
I'm not so sure this guy couldn't have liberated Quebec alone.
The man wasn't afraid to speak his mind, he refused to receive medals from Montgomery himself because he didn't like the man, and said as much. No doubt he pissed off the higher ups.
On hill 335 he was calling airstrikes on himself then moving away from the position, also he broke his back at some point but went AWOL and rested up with a Dutch family for a while before returning to duty ............proper badass
That was around the time of the half track affair in Normandy.
Broke both ankles, 4 ribs, and his back in 3 places. 28 days later he was back on duty.
Correction! He was actually calling artillery and mortar fire on his position every time the Chinese were on the verge of overtaking them, not air strikes! That being said, it's unfortunate how his insane Zwolè feat just overshadows how he found a way to input a real life cheat code to somehow retake and hold that hill despite facing 2 whole Chinese DIVISIONS.... being outnumbered by well over 1:2000
About the time he went AWOL : he actually managed to run away from the hospital with a broken back because the doctors were really going to send it back this time.
Hill #355 nick name Little Gibraltar
Boot: Seems awfully dangerous don't you think?
Leo: This is just a walk in the woods.
Boot: But you're walking into the middle of a town!

I visited Zwolle two years ago and was a bit surprised to see a Canadian Flag flying where I would expect to see a Dutch Flag. I had just arrived and was tired so I didn't look into it until the next day. I wish I had taken a picture then. That was when I learned of the story of Leo Major. As a Dutch Canadian, I was both proud and grateful.
Duke Nukem would be proud.
Seraephus more like BJ Blaskowich from Wolfenstein
From what I heard, French Canadians had a reputation of being ruthless on the battlefield. Hearing about this guy, I can understand why.
In WWI the 22nd Canadian Regiment the only French-Canadian regiment was so good, it was later (1922), given the title ; "Royal" by the British crown.
Being Canadian i can't help think at the end of his attacks, he looks back at the slaughter he's left behind him and said sorry about that class people
@@SimonRancourt C'était un bataillon en 14-18 . Quelques annés après il fut décidé d'augmenter le nombre d'hommes pour en faire un régiment .
Léo Major deserves to be the subject of a movie.
Hollywood would decline saying its simply not realistic

I'm from Zwolle this man is a bloody hero
You forgot a part of the story where he was helping a padre recover dead bodies and the truck they where travelling on rolled on a mine breaking Leo's back and killing the padre. He was in a field hospital waiting to go back to England with his war over when he escaped and rejoined his unit to continue the fight. He also called artillery on his own position in defense of the hill in Korea.
He was quite the character and is buried in a military cemetery in Pointe Claire(a burrough of Montreal). The city of Zwolle name a main artery after him and his story is very well alive there as he saved this beautiful city from being shelled by Canadian artillery that would of most likely cause lots of civilian casualties...RIP Leo Major. You earned it!
a one-eyed soldier making a garrison of soldiers flee from their position
sounds like a backstory to any army themed single player games
Boss!
Great Canadian story, Thanks for sharing this, I wasn't aware of this great man and the amazing tale along with it. Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan.
I love that he pissed on Monty's medal, too. Courage and conviction. No need for fame, just a job well done.
Well, it didn't take long for Canadian, Aussie and Kiwi troops to find out that Monty was an idiot who didn't mind the shedding of blood as long as it wasn't British blood. Monty needlessly and recklessly sacrifices thousands of men from the aforementioned troops in some sick and twisted ways while accomplishing absolutely nothing. That is why, even today, commonwealth troops are wary of foreign generals commanding their ranks even if they are engaged together in fighting the same enemy.
As a Canadian, I have so much to brag about from this video, but the kicker for me was the Korean War one:
Thousands of Americans vs. thousands of Chinese, America loses.
20 Canadians vs. thousands of Chinese, Canadians win.
The Spartans really said: "This is Leo Major!"
Tim Hortons turns your balls to steel.
Eh
The problem is what Tim Hortons does to your gut these days. It's also not even Canadian-owned anymore.
That guy has been my hero for so many years and the reason why i enlisted in the Canadian armed forces. Honorable and brave
Finally! As soon as I heard of Badass Week, I was hoping Leo would make an appearance, and he did. Thanks!
"If i had british officers, american engineering and canadian soldiers i could win any war" paraphrased but still real quote from winston churchill
Cherry picking a little don't you think, Kobra?
Projekt Kobra right well you have your 3 or 4 battles and well just take the two WORLD WARS....your welcome.
Projekt Kobra no I definitely ment to say your. But if you think that's being smart maybe I do need to elaborate on my comment.
In the short form, I'm saying that while you might of taken vimy ridge with "your planning" (which isn't entirely true anyway) and maybe there is one or two other battles that was won by Canadians and Aussie planning the fact still stands that neither world war would of been won if it wasn't for the British doing 80-90% of the fighting and planning. Want to argue about it just go look up which of the allied armies spent the longest time fighting and were the only ones to fight alone during the war...
Projekt Kobra oh I see because you don't actually have a clue let alone any real arguments against my points your just going to pick on my dyslexia how big and brave of you.
Right then tell me smart ass why did Canada declare war on the same day ? Could it be solely because there were part of the empire and HAD to by law? And well your at it tell me since when ha signing a piece of paper equatied to troops actually arriving to fight ? Because a load of British soilders were long dead before they even arrived.
You've got some front to say I'm being the desrespectful one when I'm acknowledging the sacrifices made by the commonwealth soldiers well you have tryed to play down the effort made by the British in favour of some cheap pot shots to make the others look like they did more than they did. That is fucking evil your trying to give credit to people who didn't earn it while taking it away from men and boys who died for it....
Lets be truthful though. The overall commander was Julian Byng... British. He was smart enough to use the troops he was given in the best, most effective way possible. He heeded their ideas and encouraged their initiatives. He didn't look down on them as mere colonial canon fodder. Pierre Burton wrote one of the great non-fiction Canadian war books about the battle. A must read.
You forgot to mention that while holding that hill, he was calling in mortar support basically on his own position (so close that the mortar team could hear their own shells exploding over the radio).... that is determination.
yup and Forbes was hearing the mortar on the other side of the Mike!!! I hear the story from both man...well all my unit hear it...well it was there unit before!!! dont forgot with one eyes and a broken back!!
The men and women who fought in WW2, my dad and his generation, most of them are gone now, may they rest in peace. Those still living are deserving of respect. My dad was in the battle of the bulge. He drove an ambulance. A bullet pierced his helmet, grazed his scalp, and out the other side. Knocked his helmet off. He kept on driving. He didn't get a medal for it. He was on guard duty at a MASH unit, and he killed a German commando. He didn't get a medal for that either. He was just doing what needed done. I don't care what anybody says, that's fuckin badass.
Women that fought?
Zwolle (where I live) has an avenue named after him, called "Leo Majorlaan".
Death had to sneak up on him in his sleep or there would have been a fight. And major would have won.
NO. Death had to be Polite & Respectful, and ask nicely.
Death didn’t kill his friend, the Germans did.

This man also later fought (not with guns fortunately lol) for Québec's independance from Canada. A true hero for us.
God bless our Northern neighbors, I meet more than a few at the spring grand trap event in Tucson. Great people who love fresh grapefruit. I had never heard of this magnificent solder before.
There is still a street in Zwolle named after Leo Major, and the mayor awarded an honorary citizenship in appreciation of the lone liberator.
Being Canadian, I know there are lots of crazy Canadian war hero stories but thanks for posting this! Never heard this one before. And he did all this without a hockey stick, or Gordie Howe.

Good to note, according to the Dutch Wikipedia article about him, he also single handedly captured multiple groups of around 10 Germans a time in the night he took Zwolle, only stopping sometimes to break in some house and rest a bit. He was indeed quite the bad ass.
I want to know what his dad thought of all this and what became of their relationship.

He didn't talk about his exploits, thinking nobody would beleive him.

One can read between the lines that many of those German regulars saw the writing on the wall by 1944 and weren't going to resist a chance to be out of the war, even if they could only find one Canadian to usher them in the right direction.

Most countries have their own Leo Major during the war in terms of outstanding acts under fire. The British had John "Mad Jack" Churchill plus countless Commonwealth individuals, the U.S. had 2LT Audie Murphy and CAPT Benjamin Salomon (ranks of both at the time of the former's citation for the Medal of Honor, and the latter's death ), the Finns had Simo Häyhä and Lauri Törni (admittedly his actions are more remembered for the Waffen-SS and later the Green Berets ). The Germans and Soviets of course had their own, but their names do not come to me and some information on those individuals are more hearsay than actually documented.
Léo was born january 23rd 1921 in New Bedford, Mass. only because his father, a railroad worker had a temporary affectation there. The family were french-canadian from Montréal. They returned in Montréal on september the same year. Sa famille habite successivement au 1351 des Érables en 1924, au 4389 Chambord en 1935, puis finalement sur la rue Frontenac à partir de 1938. Au plaisir!
