Bobby Prince: "This song was originally written for Wolfenstein which only supported FM synthesizers. In order to get into the mood for it, I rented a movie about the infamous "Doctor of Auschwitz" and watched it until I was totally infuriated. This song was the result of the feeling of evil that came over me thinking about the terrible things the Nazis did. During the development of DOOM II, a decision was made (by John Romero, I think) to include at least one Wolfenstein level. This song had been one of John Carmack's favorites in Wolfenstein, so I translated the FM file to a general MIDI file. The FM version had an instrument that sounded like footsteps (for soldiers marching), and I had to try to find a similar sound among the 128 standard instruments that make up the general MIDI standard. It turned out that the gunshot patch (general MIDI instruments include several sound effects) would work if I played a very low octave note for a relatively short time. One would call this "using an instrument patch by abusing it." The problem with doing this is that not all sound cards have the same effect when you abuse individual instruments. Such is the case here. On some wavetable synths, these "footsteps" last long enough that you begin to hear the richochet part of the gunshot. On the Roland Sound Canvas and the Yamaha MU-80, it does sound like many soldiers marching. Such incompatibilities and quirks are the price one pays for trying to make something do what it was not really intended to do."
Mr. Prince really did manage to capture the evil of nazism with this song. I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple decades, if Wolfenstein enters the public domain, that this ends up in some documentary about WW2
A comment talking about the evils of Nazism without someone replying with something like “We fought the wrong enemy” or something equally stupid? Nature is healing

I think I know why the Nazis are in Doom II. The terrible things they did in WWII obviously made them suffer eternal damnation in Hell, but when the demons broke loose on Earth, the Nazis returned with them to wreak havoc once more.

@@Timcup448 Basically. They never drew any rotations for the SS Trooper (or any of the others) aiming and shooting their guns in any direction but the one facing the player, and they didn't draw any new ones when adding them to the secret Wolfenstein levels in Doom 2, so you simply get the one direction that exists no matter what they're actually shooting at. I believe that the Doom Sprite Fixing Project actually adds newly made rotations for the SS Troopers to address this, in addition to also erasing a couple of the stray purple pixels which iD missed when porting the sprites over back in the day.

The neat part is that it's improvised. The SC-55 which Doom's soundtrack was composed around didn't have any instrument for marching soldiers, but with some experimenting Bobby figured if he'd use the gunshot sound instrument at a low pitch and really quickly, he could make it sound like marching. This works for SC-55, but the results wary wildly for other devices and soundfonts. On some, you'd hear ricochets, the computer I had as a kid would make it sound like some very strange and low thumping.

Check out Doom RPG, there's actually a canon role between Doomguy and BJ Blazkowiz (however you spell that name)
William Joseph Blazkowicz (pronounced as "blahz-kah-vitch").

"Mien Lieben" my love (life) ((dies))
"Schutzstaffel!"
"Mein Leben!"
umm, the S.S. guards dont say dat, say like smoustaffe! and my lion! (germany dude)
I always thought they were yelling "Gustavo!"
this song makes me think of a bunch of german soldiers slowly marching towards the gates of hell
Nothing to imagine there. That’s how it’ll go.
More like Nazi soldiers marching out the gates of Hell
You pretty much see all the Wolfenstein 3D guards marching towards you

Map32: Spear of Destiny (Hellbound)

I remember when i was playing a map for doom 2 few months ago, and i was scared shitless when SS was aiming at me after being hit by an imp xD
Reason because Id games used unmodified sprites of the ss. I am serious the width and height and color has never been modified.
