Both would work. However, I prefer using the product approach with formulaic writing such as postcards, emails, letters, etc. and the process approach with essay writing.

Genre analysis in the writing frameworks is wider in its range than useful language. Genre analysis covers areas such as: content, lexis, layout, organisation, grammar and style. Useful language is only related to grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or function.

Teaching language can happen there. However, you need to be careful how you present language here as it is no the main aim so it is advisable to use self-directed discovery where students answer a question about language and you give feedback.
Usually with lower levels, we do not ask them to write challenging texts. For example at an A1 level, some students are asked to fill in a form as a writing task where they only need to write phrases or words.

In teacher training, this is not echoing, it is called synthesising answers by summarising them into bullet points and writing them on the board. Echoing is when you repeat your students’ very same answers for no good reason. It can also be positive if you repeat their inaccurate language models but accurately, which is called reformulation.

Hi Mr Shady, how to teach writing to elementary levels? They cannot keep pace with the teacher when applying genre and product approaches.
