Cold Steel Natchez Bowie: Hand Sword

- This is a big chunk of metal. Following the impressive lines of some bowies of the past, the CS Natchez uses top notch materials and exhibits flawless craftsmanship. While it is indeed a ferocious fighter, the Natchez will probably do its best service as an impressive collection knife. It's 30 oz weight is just a little much for carrying in a multi-weapon load out. But if you don't have a gun and you've trained, you can walk pretty confidently in the valley of the shadow of death with your Natchez on your side. Bottom line: if someone pulled this on ME, I wouldn't be standing around to find out if he knew how to use it. It's one mean dude. (re-uploaded trying to get thumbnails to render)
You forget, back in the 1800s many explorers and military folks carried knives this size, along with thier guns and ammo and packs. So as for the weight, its just a matter of training up for it.
Totally agree with you. I train with the CS Natchez and can attest to it's ability to render a quick solution to those who belong in pine boxes!
Dude I'd run the other way if someone came in wearing this thing. Now that's a knife.
Just got mine! Love it!
Ever since I saw this video two years ago I've wanted it. Finally pulled the trigger on it!
Much thanks Elvis. Comments like yours keeps me pressing on!
@Janusha True. A knife will do what a knife does, but the point of discussing its handling (what you call "performance") is this: a light, quick knife will be much better than something twice its weight and length if you ever need to employ it in a defensive role. It will be easier to get out, easier to use, harder to grab hold of (there ARE some idiots who try that), and help you end the fight quicker, reducing chance for injury. Seems pretty damned important to me.
I can personally attest to the awesomeness of this knife. It made to be a fighter, and is right there with the Bagwell Bowies in that regard.
The SK version of this is around $160 on Amazon. And you can get a Trailmaster for around $130
Welcome to TNP, we are happy you found us! -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
what knife would you prefer for protection from wild animals? i often go camping alone and dont carry a gun or even have a dog with me so a big knife is ideal way to keep me on the higher end of the food chain. i have considered wakizashis, cold steel boar spear, cold steel otanto, crkt hisshou and this knife as well. this one might be ideal because it is as long as the cold steel otanto but has a wider blade thereby it could create more damage to a bear or puma than the otanto.
I forged a Bowie very close to that knife.
Mine is 3/8" thick, and the blade is a full 14" long.
It will sale through a 2" thick tree in one hit, and a 3" thick tree would be almost be cleaved right off.
That's a cool Bowie, good for them for making it.
I got mine for $65.00 at the local gun show here in Canada! Haven't used it yet for anything, but I got it mainly for the collection haha. Might do a video on it, not too sure yet though.
I have mine behind the back seat of my truck. You never know if ever things should get out of hand! Marc Burlington Ontario Canada
Yes it would be very good I suspect. However it is mis-used money as this is an expensive blade and woods use will thrash your blades. You'd be better served with an Ontario RTAK II non-SS blade at MUCH less cost in this application.
lol did anyone catch him say he had his eye on it for couple of years..knives do that to me too, no matter the price you keep thinking of it your going to end up buying it lol
Jim Bowie would be proud of that knife!
Man, this blade just makes me droooool...... what some of you need to realise is that some purchase are totally irrational. This is one of them. It is just a must have type of item. If you can afford it that is. For me I would buy it because it is a great and classic knife design that represents a fascinating part of US history that I will always enjoy. Read Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian or Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove and take a trip into the wild west!
The Thug doesn't want a fair fight, he wants massive overmatch. That is why thugs go round in groups, and sneak about using quiet weapons like knives and clubs. The gun puts him at high risk, and can deter. If you decide to run away, it is unlikely that he will be able to follow you if you give him a sucking chest wound at the start of the engagement.
seems to be well forged, nice steel..love the reflection of it.
Why didn't Cold Steel put a brass rail on the back edge? Since they strive for authenticity etc. it appears to be a glaring omission, as Jim Bowie's original knife design had them. I could be wrong. The brass rail was used practically in knife fighting to catch knife blades.
friggin gorgeous!
you had me at cold steel.
@Balisong005 try the benchmade forum, there all over that sight at about the 250.00 price range, the 42 is most def, a cornerstone of any balisong collection. good luck.
my dad gave me his and i love it, very sharp and very nice
this knife is so big you can just point it at someone who is attacking you and from 20 feet away, lacerations would just appear on them.
Is this a good knife for all purpose, camping type use as well as being a big fighting blade? I'm just trying to decide between this, a trailmaster, and a large Tops blade. Is this as reliable as a Tops blade of this size? My only worry is this not being a full tang blade and worried it might not hold up to heavy use. Thanks!
Is there really that much of a differance between a $300 knife like this and $40 buck knife from walmart, besides size I want to know if there is really a big differance in quality.
@Wombleonastick
Point is, AK47 is a practical firearm, but not a paragon of gunsmithing or a piece of weaponry heritage or whathaveyou. Antiques, rare guns, etc. are "nice", and they are quite costly.
That knife gives me a chubby. I love it very much but I will probably never buy one. If I'm going to spend and thing over 100 dollars on a knife it will definitely be a custom Bowie. Still, I'm dying to get my hands on one to see how it throws. I wonder how every fixed blade knife throws. I'm a thrower at heart and that's just how my brain works. Great review man. -danger
actually the gun makes a loud noise, and that is one way to call for help. The gun can also be used against someone on their way out, after cutting you, while looking for their next opening. One cut may not kill you, but several are likely to combine in their effects. The gun can stop that game even if you have been "mobility killed". sucking chest wounds tend to cut your ability to run.
awesome blade, unfortunately going for £513.95 over here in the uk, would probably be best buying stateside and attempting to get it shipped in, unfortunatly you might loose it to customs in the post =/ awesome vid nutn !
@Janusha ...And that shows the exact depth of your knowledge of bladed weapons.
Hey Nutn dude! They just came out with a sk-5 version of this and it comes with the secure-ex sheath you like so much! Just figured I'd give you a heads up, love all your vids -Evan
I suggest you wear this to your local pub/bar. That would be an interesting experience. ;)
That's a big-ass knife.
Remind me of the one they used in the Crocodile Dundee movie.
can't wait for the sk-5 version as well as the sk-5 leatherneck both coming from cold steel soon. time to save some money. they put out a nice lot of knives this year. those 2 look impressive, especially to think you can now get a natchez for 150 bucks in carbon steel (no chips) and that leatherneck looks great for 60. also like the redesigns of the ak/recon, etc. the only thing i'm pissed about is how much different the voyagers turned out to be vs origional designs with san mai. +new coating.
is THAT a fighting knife? i would run if someone pulled that out on me!
@ everyone who made a comment about him not using it - ITS A COLLECTION KNIFE ! you don't see people who collect classic cars racing or driving them everyday so what does it matter what he does with his own money.
OK OK please be respectful to each other and it keeps this fun. San Mai III is a great steel and I respect it. It is however indeed expensive. But it has a place in my adventures: rust resistant and holds an edge. Watch my Fallkniven A2 video that has the same steel. Also the CS Laredo Bowie is excellent is EITHER steel but the sheath, as I mentioned, is problematic. CS makes some very good blades.
POU...Stored inside the box in the back of a closest. I don't consider any production knife to be a collector. Even first/limited run knives.
Get out there and test this sucker already....PLEASE!!!!
If it breaks on you so what, just ask Lynn to send you another one. :P
Please review the Mx-8092bk Mtech Xtreme. Thanks.
You should make a video of your knife/weapons collection.
at first I thought the knife was on top of the paccage :P
the blade and handle was really nice
Check out the trailmaster by cold steel.
for factory made cold steel does make some nice stuff. love the tia pan blade also.
Great video Nutn.
just been on the uk cold steel web site and there is a natches in s-k5 comes with a kydex sheath
Did you say Not Chezz Bowie?
Apparently the newer sk-5 versions come with a secure-ex sheath.
beautiful and deadly
Great review! Beautiful knife.
Now that's sacrilegious. Though it would be fun to roll over to the cold steel forums and upload pics of the monstrosity. I think pink would be nice, nutn'.........
what steel is better high carbon steel or cold steel and also is cold steel really feel cold
I know a few of those "super studs" who carried this size knife with all their INF gear; no, I wasn't one of them. I carried a Victorinox multi-tool and a rubber-gripped Gerber on my belt -- kinda different.
It's supposed to be the 3 pieces coming together to create a blade that is where the edge has all 3 steels together.
"im gonna give u here sumthin that u cant take off..."
I don't know why you are having a go at the UK, but I find your comments offensive. The UK is one of the few real allies the US has, so alienating us with your nasty comments is nothing less than stupid....
@Balisong005 the 51 isnt weak i have flipped one and i now own one its not bad it is pretty sturdy its just light as shit i would like a 42 but i really cant find one i dont know if im not looking hard enough or what
Hey nutnfancy, when you first opened this knife was the sheath full of little plastic beads? I bought one off E-bay and the sheath wsa full of these plastic beads now I am wondering if it may be a knock-off. If it is a knock-off its a damn good one.
Great review and spot on IMO, I have one and it's an awesome blade. It's a fighter/SD blade for me though. I really think it's pretty light weight compared to my Busse FBMCG and the HI Khukris I am used to carrying around. $350 really isn't expensive for a High Quality knife.
in your opinion which is the strongest and sharpest knife
@Baseballman1998 if it was the same knife personally i would have concerns about it being a fake for that price.
I'd consider the thickness of that blade a drawback on a fighting bowie. A lot of people have come to view 1/4"+ as the minimal thickness for a knife. That's just not so, especially when that knife needs to be quick in the hand. If they'd make that knife with a 3/16" spine with a nice distal taper, I'd consider it worthy of carrying. It's best carried inside the pants in the hollow area near your kidney.
Has anyone in Iraq or Afghan posted a combat knife video on You Tube? I think that would be great, too.
@Shriner66 I'm pretty sure nutnfancy is from the U.S. based on his other videos I've watched.
Thanks for your opinion. But what do you mean when you say "something better"? Do you know similar or totally different knives (other brands too) with better cutting performance?
lol chopping limbs,
both wood and human!!!!!
My favorite quote : D
another great review : )
holy crap, looks like a freaking sword!
I am only worry about handle.. It's not full tang and that cable tang can break somehow if you chop like an axe.
Which one is better?? Trailmaster or Natchez Bowie??
In my opinion, if I owned it it would be nothing more than a collectible, it looks too good to mess up and it is expensive. Great review nutn 5 stars
what is the difference between a fighting knife and a tactical one?
Bowie knife was made for bar fights in the days of black powder single shot pistols. The false edge is used to disarm an opponent by pronating the wrist holding the knife. A slash across the forearm would disarm the opponent, and then a sadistic fighter would be able to carve his initials. In Iraq/Afghanistan it should be given as a gift to a trusted tribal chieftain.
cold steel overbuilds just about everything they make- i mean, some of their knives and machetes are great choppers but they're overbuild as far as bladesmithing goes. They're swords are not swords at all- they're just overgrown axe/machetes
that said- they're great at making smaller knives and machetes and will never let you down if you can stomach the weight
I guess it depends on where you are from also.
I live in eastern Canada, and I have a few rifles and shotguns locked away dis-assembled in my closet. Gun laws are extremely strict here, and trying to get a pistol or something for home defense would be an even more difficult task due to insane laws. So come to think of it, a knife would be good in my situation.
Also, I live in a neighborhood where we don't lock doors, and nobody is every robbed or invavded.
I am not a professional thug, and so I don't need to win, for me deterrance is as good as it gets. A fair fight is what the professional thug can't stand because he has to win 10s of fights. My job is such that having lost a hand, my work efficiency would be much the same. Thugs, not so much. The odds are that he needs to win about 10 fights a week to make his rent, I may get into one fight every 10 years perhaps, so acceptable damage levels per fight for me are high, for him, must be low.
Do you think it would be 'fast' compared to blades of a similar size and weight?
Why does the name "Natchez" give me the munchies. I'm hungry now.
lop off limbs both wood and human part kind of scary, still i love your videos
From personal experience I've found that large knives made from stainless steel are not NEARLY as durable as carbon steel knives. They don't take an edge well and they chip and break easily. They are just too brittle. Again all from MY experience and MY opinions. Someone else may say something different.
We'll create a new mounted cannon that will spray natchez bowies and drop bombs that will explode into bowie shaped shrapnel.
hey nutn u should get the value verison with the sk5 steel
@swiftdropkick - many of Cold Steels knives are very affordable. A lot of them are well under $100 and even under $50. Of course, like any knife maker they have their expensive lines too.
They have an sk-5 version, please review?
I got the SK-5 version. That is now my carry knife.
Good one
thats a nice sanchez bowie
thats the best looking prodiction bowie
awsome knife but a bit of a chunk
beautiful!
Hey, that's pronounced Boo-Wee, after Jim Bowie himself, the creator of the knife.
I see you've played knifey spooney before ROFFL!
@rascalMatt17 He did say that it is not a tactical knife.
That would be pronounced like - GNAT-chiz.
so whats the difference between this and the cold steel sk-5 bowie? this knife is 350$ while the sk-5 is like 140$. whats the difference???
which blade is better for cutting and slashing? natchez bowie or gurkha kukri? every opinion is allowed
I'M GONNA CUT A SMILE INTO 'YA,
I feel sorry for anyone who goes up against this Goliath of a knife . Seriously, something that size would dismember anything frighteningly easy!
I think even Crocodile Dundee would be shaking in his boots.
I came to watch the video and decide if I was interested. Heard you say it is $350. My interest in the knife is now gone. I can get a Busse for that much, can't I?
@justyoustupid Because it was a joke...that's the whole point. =/ -- Veri
Title: As opposed to a foot sword?
guy pulls this thing out I'm running and shooting behind me LOL.
