I tried about 10 guitars at a music store, picked this one up and played it and was amazed at it's sound and price point. I play classical guitar, new to acoustic fingerstyle. And this was before reading the reviews about it! I think I will pick this one up :)
The guitar sounds really nice, and all Yamaha guitars look like they've had a lot of attention to detail when they were built. Your playing on that guitar is really nice.
Thank you so much for the review. I must agree that this video is the best I have seen due to a wholesome coverage of almost all aspects one beginner might picture in minds about their own musical adventures . In addition it cover the features most guitar reviews have, as well as a showcase of different music styles which most other reviews do not offer. I have been bombed with ads and sort since the internet AI captured my passion in guitar. I recently bought a used fs800 in canada, it is quite a bargain for its almost new condition, price and accessories including a decent bag. It is not easy to find this model new or used in canada. It turned out to be a best fit for my size of built. I did not have the chance to try or feel at a store since the quarantine, the only thing I knew was the regular size was not comfortable to handle. I would not have bought it if I was not informed that I won a scholarship award at school. Anyways, I made up my mind at last. This guitar sounds beautifully, I am amazed that My ears could tell the difference from the guitars I used to practice on. I have not discovered many new videos from your channel, I assume that you are occupied with your work and life. If by any chance, you are willing to share your experiences of learning which lead you where you are now, I would be mostly grateful. Most guitar teaching videos are lack of bond or pictures relate to learners who have various pursuit of music. For instance, teachers do not tell students what kind of music they can play by exercise their methods and these methods and training are mostly random. Learners who know exactly the type of music they are interested in can not see what they will be able to accomplish down the path. I know your music is what I dream of myself being to be able to play, I know the picture in my head, and I hope you can share more details and stories about how you manage to get the skills. Thanks a million.
Hi, thank you for kind comment, i’m glad that you found my video useful. I have been very busy with life since my last upload but i have just started posting again on my instagram @fndguitar. I hope to be back making videos again very soon. Which style are you most interested in learning?
FNDGuitar did not expect for a reply, I have most passion on finger style, I see Kotaro Oshio as my inspiration. His Twilight and Yemen lee’s autumn leaves are my favorites. I listen to soul, jazz, RnB, and classical music. It is why I find your performance such a delight, and I wish my self maybe can take the path you took and play decent music. Hope you enjoy your life and stay safe. :)
@@fndguitar I'm fond of Yamaha too (from piano, actually.) They seem to make high quality products regardless of whatever it is that they're making! Art & Lutherie has an interesting tone to their guitars. In my opinion, they sound 'old-timey' .. but in a good way :-)

Well done mate. I have an FG830 but im ordering this FS800 in the sandburst color for when i want something a little smaller in the body. The FG is great. But it's a tank
I know it’s been 2 years but did you ever get the FS800? If so how is it? I’m debating the dreadnaught body vs the concert and it’s difficult to find people who have owned both
Buying one of these tomorrow, the reviews are really good which is what made me consider it. Only thing that’s putting me off is the fact it’s made in China, not to say they don’t make good products like DJI but in general different not always the case idk
The R&B portion was beautiful bro. I just purchased it and it will be ariving soon. Do you have any advice for someone who has no experience and is wanting to get into learning to play the guitar?
Hey Great review. I just bought this guitar but I don't like the stock strings it comes with. It is good for fingerstyle but not good even for light strumming because it sounds flat and "stringy" to my ears with very little seperation of tone. Any good strings for this guitars that works for strumming and not too bright?
It has a short scale that is why. Not all fingerstyle guitars have a 1.75, some have narrower like this. It's preference. If you prefer wider, then look elsewhere. Good luck finding one that plays and sounds well for $199.Otherwise you get a smaller OM sized body and a shorter scale with less string tension which is suited for...you guessed it...fingerstyle.
I play piano but I am looking to buy a guitar for my birthday so I can learn and use it at a song writing tool. Best guitar video I found. Thank you❤️ I play piano by ear but I am looking to learn how to play guitar.
Factory string? I actually like the yamaha strings, the sound is hard to replace once you swap them out and I never see yamaha strings when I'm out so I usually end up with something else. Do you have a recommendation far as strings for this guitar and for your style
I'm thinking I've seen a review that stated that the FS800 body isn't as deep (thick) as the 700. I had An FG700S and loved it. For me, it left nothing to be desired in sound quality. I tried an FS800 again this evening after just purchasing a used Seagull Entourage Mini Jumbo (online) and was thinking, man maybe I should have just gotten an FS800. I was thinking the Seagull was a bit smaller than it is, and tonight I loved the smaller size, feel and sound of the FS
Hi Dan, I've subscribed to your page as I really enjoy your tutorial on the maj7 and min7 chord. Actually after watching you, I;m tempted to buy this FS800. My question is, despite the nice sound and build quality, how is the action of the guitar? heard that yamaha FG (and FS) series have high actions that will affect the playability (for beginner especially). Is that true? Thanks Mate!
Hi Jeremy, thank you so much for subscribing! I will say that the FG I tried was a bit more tricky to play than the FS, but I find that OM shape guitars like the FS are easier to play in general than a Dreadnaught style guitar like the FG. Action wise all of the FS's I tried where great, I would always recommend you go to the store and pick one out and if you think it needs any adjustments you can ask the store to do it for you (you'll also be able to compare FG to FS). If you have to order it online you can still take it to a professional to have it set up if you think there's a problem. One of my students bought his from Amazon and it came set up well out of the box with good action. Let me know if you have any more questions or if you need help getting started on the guitar! Cheers.
Thanks@@fndguitarfor your advice! I think considering it is a solid-top guitar with a reasonable price range it will be no harm to try that out. Another thing, i notice in ur profile u r an Indonesia / UK based guitarist - r u Indonesian? :)
-a whole lot of guitar for $200... get a "Journey" internal, 3-lead pickup for it, and you're good !!! (-also comes in "Sandburst" finish, from Guitar Center)
Hehe hey this particular ringing sound around 1:15 , its the same as mine on high e on electric, i cant get rid of it somehow, do you know what it could be?
Hey buddy, that’s fret buzz, here it’s because i didn’t quite hit the note properly - i was too much on the fret. If it happens all the time you could try raising your action and making sure your frets are level. It could also be bridge or nut issues - tbh i always take my guitars to a professional, but if that’s not an option there are videos online you can try to learn from.
I just got one of these, I saw a review on amazon saying you need to stretch the strings did you do that? I have no clue about guitars I am just starting.
I was going to get one because it has a solid top, which is unheard of forc200$ but one reviewer said it's meant for smaller hands, as far as the width of the fretboard.
I have big hands. Think thumb over the top like Hendrix is easy for me big. Yes the string spacing is 10mm and it forced me to work at being accurate but that hasn't been an issue since I adapted to it.
I sold one of these about a year ago and am kicking myself. I'm going to pick up a new on tomorrow. These things really punch way above their weight class. I really think these guitars are the absolute best value in the guitar world.
Hi there... I love your video which also confirmed my first guitar purchase. Thank you. My guitar sounds lovely, but not as tone rich since my setup & PB 12-53 strings. What strings do you use?
I appreciate your quick reply and will order Ernie Balls. I remember how fat the low E string was. Regarding Elixirs, which you do prefer? Thank you in advance and wishing a great 2021 🎉
Good question! I got my fs830 about a year ago, it’s been hard getting back my skills after a long break but then I wondered if it’s partly the action as it does look high on mine. I’ve read where you need to check beforehand as some are set too high. I’m going to take it to be set up properly and also change the bridge pins to brass ones.
Is this still a guitar you would recommend nowadays? Or are there better options around the same price available now? A lot of reviews say it's great but they are also from a few years ago so just wondering how it holds up a few years later
Hey, I'd be surprised if anything better has come out in the last couple years, innovations aren't normally that quick in the guitar world. I've still got mine and still think it's amazing for the price. Good luck!
I have a question. when you bought the FS800 is that how it came originally sounding or did you tune it differently or is it different strings? im curious because I have the Yamaha FS800 but it sounds different.
Just Karlee Hi, i had just put new strings on, but the strings that came on the guitar sounded great as well. It’s in standard tuning EADGBE. Did you just buy your guitar new?
No doubt the best all-around acoustic for the price. I've got the FS700S and it's my everyday workhorse although I've done some upgrades that I highly recommend to obtain full potential out of your axe - bone saddle, Tusq nut, ebony bridge pins, and mainly for aesthetics but also for greater tuning accuracy I upgraded to open gear 18:1 Grover Sta-Tite tuners. Gets this sub $200 guitar to punch well above it's weight class! Cheers!
Hi! Nylon strings are lighter than steel and so you have to press down less. Honestly, it's not that much easier than playing steel strings if your guitar is set up correctly. Guitarists who have been playing for a long time would be playing nylon strings because they prefer the sound, not necessarily because it's easier to play. If you're new to guitar i'd say the most important thing is to learn on the strings you like the sound of more - if you think nylon strings sound better play them. If you think steel strings sound better then learn on them, even if it takes a little longer to build your finger strength up. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
Hey, it was a few years ago now in Jogja - Diana Musik or Chic Musik i think. But maybe you can find one in one of the Nuansa Music or Yamaha Music Squares that seem to be everywhere.
I saw an amazing one today in a local shop. I believe some of the yamaha's have necks that have been CNC'd....the neck looked perfect. It came close to capoing without any buzzes which means a perfect level....but!!!! not all yamaha's are that good....bought an LS6M ($500.00) two weeks ago and had to return it before I left the store....worse neck I've ever seen on a new guitar. You got to play them or prepare to return a bad one.
Adam Egbaria Thankyou! I like the smaller body of the FS800, it’s much more comfortable for me. I like the sound of smaller guitars too, but that’s preference.
Adam Egbaria the FG is fuller as it’s got more resonance in the bigger body. If you wanted to strum open chords it’s gonna sound big and powerful. The FS is gonna sound more balanced, so you can play single note stuff and it’s going to sound punchy like your chords. Open chord stuff - FG Single note stuff/fingerstyle - FS That’s just my opinion though, i know it might be a bit tricky to actually test them out right now, but that’s always your best bet.
@@fndguitar Thanks for the reply man. I'm just starting out really. But what I would like to play in the future hopefully are songs like Perfect, I won't give up, The simple things. Which one do you think would be more fit for those types of songs?
Ordering online is fine, just check the return policy. Ideally you go to a guitar store and try tons of them first, but I have done that many times before but I also ordered a Orangewood Rey M for $135 from Amazon and I love it. You can check the guitar center website, a lot of free shipping options and easy 45 day return policy.
Add on the price of a gig bag. So, it was between this one and an Orangewood, and I choose the OW because of the gig bag factor. By the way, Orangewood holds its own against any other $200 guitar on the market, including this one.
Can you tell me any well-regarded fingerstyle player who regularly uses a guitar with 2.0" string spacing at the bridge? This guitar is not suitable for fingerstyle playing. The FG800, 5mm+ wider at the bridge would be fine. You might be able to make the FS800 work, but few beginning players will apreciate it's narrow spacing under the right hand. At the nut, it's fine. Possibly the most misleading, if well-meaning review I have seen on YT. The FS800 needs a disclaimer before purchase, for it's outlier string spacing at the bridge, which severely limits it's performance for most adults who are considereing it.
They're definitely good guitars. The Taylor will be even smaller than this one, both body and neck length. You'll probably be looking at marginally better construction in the Taylor, better strings out of the box (last time I bought a Taylor it came with some nice Elixirs) and a brighter sound. The Taylor is also electro-acoustic right? The Yamaha should give you with a more balanced rounded sound and will probably be quite a bit cheaper unless you've got a good deal on a used one? I played both at the store before settling on the Yamaha down to the fact this was a better $/value ratio and the smaller Taylor would have taken a bit of adjustment to get used to.
Hey man, action is great, super easy to play. I've tried my fair share of crappy acoustics too and know what you mean! I tried a few out at different stores before purchasing this one and I would have been happy with any of them. Cheers!
I got the fg800 one and can't get used to it, it sounds so clean and projections so well, but Kinda got used to my old cheap guitar, with hard as strings and rough sound. Weird ;?
Don't worry, keep going and i'm sure it will click. Your old strings will be duller - and hide mistakes well. With more clarity and projection the good gets projected, but so do the little mistakes - which we all make! The nice thing is, if you keep practicing on the FG800 you'll be able to hear those mistakes better and be able to identify and fix the problems. Failing that - keep playing and your strings will become more dull over time and maybe it will be more comfortable for you. I preferred duller strings when I was starting out, there's nothing wrong with it - whatever's best for you!

I tried about 10 guitars at a music store, picked this one up and played it and was amazed at it's sound and price point. I play classical guitar, new to acoustic fingerstyle. And this was before reading the reviews about it! I think I will pick this one up :)
you are the man. Nice playing too. Anyone who wants the acoustic electric option they sell it for 300..
Thank you bro. I had no idea there was an electro-acoustic version so that's good info!
Very good video. The Yamaha FS800 is really a nice guitar for the price. Really nice playing too.
YOU did this review RIGHT! Giving us a true sampling of music from every genre! Would you consider doing a review on the Yamaha FSX800C?
Awesome man! Really nice playing and review.
Great review. I'm looking at this guitar but I'm also thinking about Art & Lutherie.
I’ve never tried one so can’t be of much help with comparison, but i still really love this guitar 2 years on and haven’t thought about upgrading!
@@fndguitar I'm fond of Yamaha too (from piano, actually.) They seem to make high quality products regardless of whatever it is that they're making! Art & Lutherie has an interesting tone to their guitars. In my opinion, they sound 'old-timey' .. but in a good way :-)
@@PatrickAllyn I have the fS800
Didn't have the chance to go to a store since we're in quarantine. I ordered one online from my local store and started learning right away. It sounds amazing.
The timbre around the 7th to 9th fret range is fantastic. 👌
I know this is 1 year ago but I just started my Guitar Journey using Justinguitar. He is an amazing teacher and the best part is it's all free.
My advice is to take it in and have it setup, you wont believe how much easier it will play, probably $40, well worth it
There’s apps that can help you learn
Just got one yesterday. Thing is a beast
I'M A YAMAHA MAN GREAT GUITARS
What’s the song at 5:00 ?? I wanna learn! Looks like fun! Very good review btw, 20/10!
Best review of this guitar was right. What great sound!
Putting on headphones is a must. You miss a lot on regular iPhone audio.
Hello. May I ask what strings (gauge, brand) are you using for your Yamaha FS800? Thank you.
Hey Great review. I just bought this guitar but I don't like the stock strings it comes with. It is good for fingerstyle but not good even for light strumming because it sounds flat and "stringy" to my ears with very little seperation of tone. Any good strings for this guitars that works for strumming and not too bright?
Best guitar review ever. You really bring out the best in this guitar...can you teach me how to play that? Is your fs800 natural or tinted finish?
Nice playing & demo of instrument.
Thank you!
Usually fingerstyle guitars have a 1.75 inch nut width. This has a narrow nut, so why is this guitar suited for fingerstyle?
It has a short scale that is why. Not all fingerstyle guitars have a 1.75, some have narrower like this. It's preference. If you prefer wider, then look elsewhere. Good luck finding one that plays and sounds well for $199.Otherwise you get a smaller OM sized body and a shorter scale with less string tension which is suited for...you guessed it...fingerstyle.
Can you help me please I have question about fingertyle guitar
@@zayadali5816 Are you asking me?
Is that a specific song you’re playing around 1:45? Sounds so nice.
Hi James, it’s Moon River as made famous by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Cheers!
Hays now i found it... Thanks James and for the creator
7:25 is that the disney intro song ?
Jacob Sanchez yes bro, Bill Frissell arranged an amazing solo guitar version.
Could you please review the Yamaha fs830? Thanks
I'm waiting for someone to do a review Yamaha fs700 vs Yamaha fs 800 series
I'm thinking I've seen a review that stated that the FS800 body isn't as deep (thick) as the 700. I had An FG700S and loved it. For me, it left nothing to be desired in sound quality. I tried an FS800 again this evening after just purchasing a used Seagull Entourage Mini Jumbo (online) and was thinking, man maybe I should have just gotten an FS800. I was thinking the Seagull was a bit smaller than it is, and tonight I loved the smaller size, feel and sound of the FS
2:17 that sounds like Best Part by Daniel Cesar
Had three of the same chords actually
Well spotted! I base an R&B guitar chord lesson on it here: ruclips.net/video/khKlQ-lXzIo/видео.html
Which Yamaha case would be the best fit for the FS800?
Hi Jeremy, yeah man! Indonesian/English, Papaku dari Indonesia. I'm based in Indo right now.
@@fndguitar Wow... Great to know bro! R u based in Jakarta? Wish u have any private or online guitar course :)
what composition are you playing at 1:42
-a whole lot of guitar for $200... get a "Journey" internal, 3-lead pickup for it, and you're good !!!
The strings will stretch on their own over time you don’t need to worry about doing it
I was going to get one because it has a solid top, which is unheard of forc200$ but one reviewer said it's meant for smaller hands, as far as the width of the fretboard.
I have big hands. Think thumb over the top like Hendrix is easy for me big. Yes the string spacing is 10mm and it forced me to work at being accurate but that hasn't been an issue since I adapted to it.
I came here looking for a budget guitar that I can play Neon by John Mayer. Unfortunately I dont have 4 grand to buy a Martin OM28 lol
Sir, Is it has v shape or c shape neck? Confy enought for big hands?
Hello, just bought it yesterday, and i noticed a little bulge on tol near the bridge. Is it normal?
Yes. A small bulge is normal.
I sold one of these about a year ago and am kicking myself. I'm going to pick up a new on tomorrow. These things really punch way above their weight class. I really think these guitars are the absolute best value in the guitar world.
This guitar is bad for strumming
@@michaelv5292 You can strum any guitar you may not get the volume of a dread but bad for strumming, No. Just different sounding 🤷🏻♂️
Is this 000/OM size guitar like Martin 000X1A or smalller than that 00 or travel size? I love 000 size guitar but i love ths one.
Very useful video. Thank you very much!
Thank you Giuseppe, glad I could help.
sounds great, looking for one for my student it looks like a good size too
Still very happy with it, very comfortable size.
Hi there... I love your video which also confirmed my first guitar purchase. Thank you. My guitar sounds lovely, but not as tone rich since my setup & PB 12-53 strings. What strings do you use?
Hi, I like to use Ernie Ball aluminium Bronze 12-54. Elixir also make great strings but they're a bit pricey.
I appreciate your quick reply and will order Ernie Balls. I remember how fat the low E string was. Regarding Elixirs, which you do prefer? Thank you in advance and wishing a great 2021 🎉
@@fndguitarboth of those are excellent and my choice as well.
I have the FS850 which is the mahogany version and has such a nice tone. The FS8xx are nicely sized guitars, highly recommended.
Ohh, i'll have to hunt down a mahogany version to try! Cheers.
it is mahogany its called nato i didnt know this when i bought it but its also called eastern mahogany
can u tell me bro how is the string height of this guitar???
Good question! I got my fs830 about a year ago, it’s been hard getting back my skills after a long break but then I wondered if it’s partly the action as it does look high on mine. I’ve read where you need to check beforehand as some are set too high. I’m going to take it to be set up properly and also change the bridge pins to brass ones.
How is this compared to the fender CC60 series?
Great playing
Whats the name to the blues song sounds really cool
Is this still a guitar you would recommend nowadays? Or are there better options around the same price available now? A lot of reviews say it's great but they are also from a few years ago so just wondering how it holds up a few years later
Hey, I'd be surprised if anything better has come out in the last couple years, innovations aren't normally that quick in the guitar world. I've still got mine and still think it's amazing for the price. Good luck!
@@fndguitar Thanks mate, really appreciate the help!
Cheers!
Great idea Darryl, I can definitely see myself doing a few upgrades once I can get my hands on some parts. Sounds great on your channel!
I have an FG 800s decent guitar value for money
excellent chops dude, definitely makes me feel more confident ordering such a cheap instrument
I am confused..if anyone can help. Why are so many yt videos on nylon strings, is it so hard to play on steel some fingerstyle??
@@fndguitar thank you for the reply. I have yamaha310 with steel strings but might buy one more guitar with nylon :D
❤I have one!!!❤
Amazing!🎶🎸
No reason NOT to add it to your arsenal!
No left hand version.
Your sound on that guitar. If I close my eyes and just listen I hear Larry Carlton. Nicely done!
Wow! That is very high praise indeed. Thanks.
May I ask where you purchased this guitar? I'm in Indonesia and I couldn't find this model.
Nice video!
I can't decide between the FS800 or FG800. Which one would tou recommend and why?
Thanks :)
Adam Egbaria Thankyou! I like the smaller body of the FS800, it’s much more comfortable for me. I like the sound of smaller guitars too, but that’s preference.
@@fndguitar Hownare they different in sound? I guess I couldn't go wrong with either
Adam Egbaria the FG is fuller as it’s got more resonance in the bigger body. If you wanted to strum open chords it’s gonna sound big and powerful. The FS is gonna sound more balanced, so you can play single note stuff and it’s going to sound punchy like your chords.
Open chord stuff - FG
Single note stuff/fingerstyle - FS
That’s just my opinion though, i know it might be a bit tricky to actually test them out right now, but that’s always your best bet.
@@fndguitar Thanks for the reply man. I'm just starting out really. But what I would like to play in the future hopefully are songs like Perfect, I won't give up, The simple things. Which one do you think would be more fit for those types of songs?
Adam Egbaria you’re welcome bro. If you’re just starting out i think the FS is gonna be easier to play.
Does it sound lookalike fg800?
Yes indeed Yamaha 800 FS sure is excellent, but out here in NZ you'll pay around $600.oo for them, still awesome guitar's no question 😊😊😊
“Don’t know why” 🎶🖤
I’m new to guitar and is ordering a guitar online safe or do u have to buy from a store
Would it fit in a grand concern shape case?
Add on the price of a gig bag. So, it was between this one and an Orangewood, and I choose the OW because of the gig bag factor. By the way, Orangewood holds its own against any other $200 guitar on the market, including this one.
Wonder what ur playing now
Can you tell me any well-regarded fingerstyle player who regularly uses a guitar with 2.0" string spacing at the bridge? This guitar is not suitable for fingerstyle playing. The FG800, 5mm+ wider at the bridge would be fine. You might be able to make the FS800 work, but few beginning players will apreciate it's narrow spacing under the right hand. At the nut, it's fine. Possibly the most misleading, if well-meaning review I have seen on YT. The FS800 needs a disclaimer before purchase, for it's outlier string spacing at the bridge, which severely limits it's performance for most adults who are considereing it.
what exactly is this model's shape? OM?
Really like this guitar
Yeah, i think it’s OM.
what is every song you played here i need to know
how do you think this compares to Taylors Mini GS guitars?
Good review! How's the action on it? I've seen too many acoustics that are almost impossible to play.
Hey man, action is great, super easy to play. I've tried my fair share of crappy acoustics too and know what you mean! I tried a few out at different stores before purchasing this one and I would have been happy with any of them. Cheers!
I receive mine tomorrow!
You're a fantastic player .. and this is an incredible guitar
I'm a newbie. Please help me choose. I'm conflicted between this and the fender fa 100?
joel allwyn Hey Joel, sorry for the late reply - i’d go for the yamaha. Fender is my go to for electric but i don’t like their acoustics as much.
What do you recommend for a good inexpensive beginner's electric guitar?
I made a video review for a squier affinity telecaster, it's a great budget option.
What about Fender CD60 S?
Please reply
Good review....
That is a filipino song you played, "Dahil sa'yo".
@@fndguitar you were right :) i love it now!
