The castle is situated on the Schlossberg above the district Hohenecken of Kaiserslautern. It is not known exactly when it was built. In the past it was assumed that the castle was built shortly after the new construction of Barbarossa Castle around 1156. More recent findings, however, suggest that construction began 50 years later. The massive curtain wall and the five-sided keep indicate that the castle was built around 1200.
The castle had a floor area of about 50 by 90 meters and is considered by experts to be one of the most worth seeing of the Staufer period.
In the first half of the 13th century, a ministerial dynasty from Kaiserslautern held the fief. These were descendants of the knight Reinhard von Lautern. In 1214 the king and later emperor Friedrich II. granted him the patronage right to Ramstein. From then on they called themselves von Hohenecken.
The dominion included the valley community of Hohenecken, which had developed at the foot of the castle hill, as well as Erfenbach, Espensteig, Siegelbach and Stockweiler, which is now called Stockborn.
The decline of Hohenecken Castle began with the beginning of the modern age. In the Peasants' War of 1525, it was taken by rebellious farmers. Around 1668, Elector Karl Ludwig von der Pfalz besieged the castle. This ended with its partial destruction. In 1689, during the Palatinate War of Succession, French troops finally blew it up.
Today the ruins are a popular destination for excursions and offer a wonderful view into the countryside.
