- Ever been to Chessington South station? It seems like a fairly innocuous branch line terminus station, located in the peaceful suburbs of South West London. But look a little closer, and a fascinating story begins to emerge - of a station frozen in time, a ghost platform that's never seen a passenger in its life, and tracks that continue on to seemingly nowhere! Let's take a trip to the fascinating little station at Chessington South ^_^

*Desperately finds way to link this to NCL*
OK so SWR operate 707s to here sometimes
707s are from the same family of trains as the 717s that operate on the NCL
Could also use that some of the 455s that operate on the line have class 508 trailer cars inserted into them. The 508 is from the same family of trains as the 313 which used to operate on the NCL
*wipes brow*
Take the pinned comment spot man, it's all yours xD *round of applause*
THat train would not be back for several hours, as they work a roster going to Woking, Guildford via Epsom, Chessington, and Guidford via Cobham in rotation.
It shows a remarkable lack of enterprise from SWT and now SWR, along with Chessington World of Advantures, that they never extended to line over the existing embankment to Chalky Lane, about half a mile further, which is 100 yards from the entranceto Chessington World of Adventures. Instead, visitors have to tramp along the busy A243 from Chessington South (or more likely they drive all the way) .
You mentioned Northern Heights! It all comes back to the Northern City Line!
DING DING DING THERE IT IS ^_^
Brilliant video, I saw this station on maps and noticed a short stretch of track to the south of it marked and always wondered whether the line was meant to go further.
Well now you know the answer! Thank you so much ^_^
4:34 I think the original plan was for the platforms to be linked via Subway, and I believe some remnants of it still remain down there somewhere, but that would also explain why you couldn't find any way onto that platform, as a Subway is not as obvious as a footbridge and has all been sealed off anyway!
Great video! I've always found this branch fascinating so it's always nice when someone makes a nice little video like this about it!
There was going to be a footbridge over the tracks and there is an “entrance” boarded up with blue wood high up on the wall of the operating platform. You can spot it in the final frames of this video that shows the train depending the station.
Great spot! That answers that question ^_^
Plz come back
Just recently watched the Jago Hazzard video on this line which is an interesting companion piece to this video. Look forward to more vids like these :)
Oh fantastic! Thank you ^_^ That's a nice way of looking at things, because like, I hate to come off like I'm covering the same topic as someone else or 'copying' anyone? So it's better to look at them like companion pieces to each other, we cover different parts of the same topic and in different ways. ^_^
I am a sucker for multiple videos on the same topic as I love getting different people's perspective on things. The amount of videos I have watched on say the f1 spygate scandal of 07 is ridiculous 😂
@@mreid84 exactly! Far too many people are concerned with not covering subjects touched by others, but everyone has their own perspective they can bring, they will focus on different aspects, they will have different access needs and priorities!
Always love your videos. By any chance, could you bring back the awesome intro music of the earlier videos?
I like how when you say ghost platform around 5:00 there's a NR person in high vis at the back on said platform :D
Yeah, he walked right past where I was filming to cross the tracks to get onto it, and looked at me like I was utterly nuts xD
Nice!
Nice video, Chessington South is one of those quirky stations, I think it GBRF or DB Cargo that operates the recent freight but makes you wonder what happened if it ended up at Leatherhead, would the whole line ended up closing or kept open?
That's a fascinating point! Could've ended up just another Beeching Cut victim in the 60s.
My uncle remembered them building the bridge from Chessington North to South when he was a child. I think the tack never went any further due to the outbreak of WWII I had heard the embankments went on a fair distance beyond the coal yard. Nice little video
Used to go there every day as my school was there Fleetwood county sec school got the train from Chessington North one stop away now lazy was that, the coal depot was still there when I left in 1962
Here is a link to what is beyond the station if anyone is interested - ruclips.net/video/Hz9v6As0KCg/видео.html
Crossrail 2 will replace southwest trains one day ?
Least used derelict platform a New Series !!😂
Will there be anymore another station another mile episodes? Been missing them
Hello AJ, your story telling and editing skills have greatly improved and is a excellent video. Keep it up
Thank you so much! ^_^
used it only for chessington theme park lol
Hi There, a great Video and interesting to hear your thoughts about this Station. Kind regards Peter
My childhood line, my stop - Malden Manor 🙂
Hey AJ, hope all is well. Not seen anything from you lately
This line was planned to go to Leatherhead.
It has been eight months since we last had a video from you, and I fear you may have alighted at a disused platform never to be seen or heard of again. Life is better with your videos than without and I look forward to seeing more arriving. Of course, actually finding any trains running to talk about might be a challenge.....
This was absolutely fascinating, thank you so much for sharing it! I love learning more about the stations around London & will have to visit the ghost platform one day ☺️
Aww thank you!! It's just so fascinating to me that it's a ghost platform that was built but has never seen a passenger...I almost want just one train to stop in that platform and people to get out so it *finally* sees some passengers on that platform xD
You should take a ride on the new South Western Railway Class 701 Arterios when they are up and running hopefully later this year. With the remaining Class 707s cascaded to Southeastern.
What's the difference with the new 701s to the 700s/707s? :)
@@HeyItsAJOmega The 707s work!
Seriously though, the 700s and 707s are Siemens products, the 701s are Bombardier - similar to the 710s on the Overground and the 720s on Greater Anglia. SWR's franchise bid was based on a uniform suburban fleet oif 701s rather than the mixed bag of retractioned 455s, 456s transferred from Southern,, rebuilt 458s, and new 707s that SWT offered.
I agree with what Norbiton Flyer said.
Oh, that ended suddenly. I kind of hoped you might be going to show us a bit of the continuation...Curiousity whetted, I had a look at the 'Streetmap' Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 and indeed it goes on about 750m, petering out into a siding. Google Maps/Google Earth show a bit of the track south of Chessington South station until the trees cover it. But it is pretty clear that the unused 1939 prepared railtrack base extends 1.5km or so further to the B280 (Rushett Lane), now used by paths leading on to Ashstead Station. Was that to be the route? I thought it would have gone down by Rushetts Farm, alongside the A24 connecting up with a southward facing junction to the Leatherhead and Dorking line near Leatherhead Common (now built over by the M25 motoway).
The first one I think would've been the proposed route, it seems to make the most sense in terms of the flow of the line. :)
Excellent 😊
Have you not been to Rose Hill Marple, might be worth a little video and if you venture up that way you could do the one train a week from Stockport to Stalybridge
Can't say I have! I must investigate :D
👍🏼 but take off the colour grade
Why?
brilliant video Chessington South looks like a nice station and i do like the class 455s that use the station awesome work
Thank you so much! It's a really nice little station, and getting to ride a Class 455 or two is a nice bonus :)
Excellent video and as you say an interesting little station. I've never been so may have to plan a trip next time I am nearby.
Thank you! That sounds great, it's a nice little trip :)
You should check out Epsom Downs Station, it definitely fits into the lost category!
Oooh, and it's not far away from Chessington South right? ^_^
@@HeyItsAJOmega It's literally the area next to Chessington. It's a short walk from Epsom Down to Tattenham Corner station as well
with those cement arches looks like it was bomb proof kinda
Good point! The Southern Railway really liked their concrete architecture over wood or bricks :)
@@HeyItsAJOmega should last 50 ish years maybe 40
I think this is my new favourite channel 🚂
Thank you!! ^_^
@@HeyItsAJOmega thank you yourself 😁
Quality mate.
Thank you! ^_^
Harlepool has one.
A ghost platform? :)
Another great video as the trains look as retro as the platform does
That's a good point! The units originally date from 1982-1985, so I guess they do have a bit of a retro vibe to them xD
I love the architecture of those platforms
They look great, don't they? ^_^
It’s been ages since I’ve watched one of your videos AJ, but honestly, they’ve only gotten better. This is a fantastic video, I can’t lie :)
Thank you so much! ^_^
In the final shot of your video that shows the train departing from the operating platform, if you look up you can see a blue wooden “door”. This was going to be the footbridge that would have gone over the tracks, linking the two platforms, enabling passengers to access the platform that never opened from the main station entrance / booking hall.
There we go! Mystery solved, thank you ^_^ good spot too!
I have been fascinated by the station for some time. I was recently there when I was going to the theme park and I just loved the atmosphere.
Right? It's a lovely little station just to spend some time at :)
such a warm video! thank you
Thank you so much!
My home station. Great video, very informative.
Oh awesome!! Thank you :)
Amazing work 👏
Thank you! ^_^
Nice railway video
Thank you!!
