- HIFIMAN HE1000SE PLANAR MAGNETIC HEADPHONE; THE KING OF CLASSICAL AND ORCHESTRAL MUSIC? ZMF VERITE AND RAD-0 SOUND COMPARISONS. amzn.to/3uEWgXn
Hey, friends, in this video, I will discuss the Hifiman HE1000se Headphone, review their features, build quality, specs, design, overall quality of sound, and how they compare briefly to the ZMF Verité Open LTD and the Rosson Audio RAD-0 with a stock tuning. I test the Hifiman HE1000se with several amplifiers and DACs to get a feel for the best pairings and quality of sound. Some of the digital-analog converters and headphone amplifiers I used were the AmpsandSound Nautilus, Matrix Element X, Schitt Bifrost 2, Topping A90 Headphone Amp, Topping D90 Digital Analog Converter, Schiit LYR 3, ZMF Pendant to name a few to give my overall conclusions.

Awesome work Marcello!! The B Rolls were great, especially in revealing the true quality of the headphones. Absolutely loved this review, especially coming from someone who owns both the Verite and the HEKSE. :)
The HEKSE is actually insane with EQ. Brings the tonality much much closer to Susvara. I use Resolve's EQ suggestions bringing down the peaks at 6.5k, 13k and a little at 4k. Then boosting 8k and a bit of a bass shelf respectively. Brings the tonality much more lifelike taming all the peaks, but keeping the insane technical capabilities of these headphones.
But still for liveliness and real tonality, the Verite is exceptional. The details are extremely close to the HEKSE too, just not so comparable in terms of it's imaging and staging capabilities.
Both of them get almost equal headtime for me though I very very slightly prefer the HEKSE since I'm a detail freak.
Thank you @Sean Ng I appreciate you!!!!

you put a lot of effort in the music and b-roll, nice work man
I appreciate you noticing @Sheldon Thomas thank you for your support brother!!!!!!!
Thank you for the great review and comparison, Marcello!
Thank you Martin!! Appreciate you brother
Great review, awesome videography, and LOVE those knives haha.
Thank you! Appreciate you @KillerAudioFile
Great work buddy! I love the shots with the knives and tubes in the frame!
Thank you buddy!! Appreciate you @Brandon 🙏
Great video! Super helpful having some great comparisons.
Thank you 🙏 appreciate you!!
You make the 1000SE sound exactly like what I would prefer, I definitely need to try them.
Also with all this EQ talk in general, I'd like to see a review of tone/EQ controls like the Schiit Loki or the larger balanced version the Lokius they just came out with. Or any other brand of physical tone controls with knobs. I use a Loki Mini + and it's amazing, it totally changed my mind about EQ.
If you are a big classical, orchestral music listener with the right amp pairing, they are stellar!
@@MarcelloRostagni Would ifi pro iCAN be a good match?
@@DMEGC imo yes 👍
Great video, Marcello. 👍🏽
Thank you! 👍 appreciate you @Christopher Lückenbach
Thanks very much for a very professional review, I loved your explanations which were spot on. Also loved your background! As it works out, I currently own an Ananda, but I am looking to upgrade straight past the Arya to the high end. These models were literally the 3 that I am currently looking at. I think the open airy feel of the Ananda appeals to me, so maybe the HE1000se first, ZMF Verite a close 2nd
@Paul Bent thank you so much for watching! I am glad it helped. All three headphones are great depending on your preferences. If you do decide to pick up a pair use the links in the video description it helps to support my filming efforts! I hope you subscribed and let me know if there is any gear you want me to review next. Cheers 🍻

So glad I came across this video. I have the Arya Stealth, and was wondering if the ZMF Verite Open would be a good upgrade, especially for classical, but also for when I feel like listening to other genres. Seeing how close it performs technically to the HEKSE, and how much more natural the midrange tonality is, I think I found what I'm looking for! Grazie mille Marcello!!
Glad you enjoyed the video @Aaron Haas! Thanks for your support!
Hey Marcello, great video, very informative. I just came across your channel from recommendation as I was watching Darko Audio and etc. I would very much like to listen to those tracks you were taking about. Can you provide the playlist links!

That’s some killer b-roll.
Good stuff! Do you think it is fair to say that the HE1k needs a chain that can put more 'body' into the music?
@Elnrik for my personal listening preferences I would definitely say it pairs better with a warmer slightly euphonic tube amp to give them a bit more body and richness.
Do you want to show your support for my RUclips Channel or content I am creating but not ready to make a purchase? This link on my website www.mrhifireviews.com/sponsorship is a great way to show your support and help with my Hard Drive costs, filming, editing, and written content. Great stuff my guy!
Thank you @Ace of Spades appreciate you!!
Love the video. I have a question (late I know, but I didn't have this question 5 months ago), did you have any impedance mismatch issues with the hekse and the ZMF Pendant? I am thinking about getting the Pendant se for my HEKSE, and that is my only concern.
Hi @moviedave2001 I don't remember having any issues off the low Z but this was a long time ago. I am not sure it would be my top choice though from a synergy perspective. I think the HekSe pairs better with a warmer, Slightly more dynamic amp with no feedback. Look at a SET amp with a bit more midrange and lower-end emphasis, in my opinion. thesourceav.com/ has some good options from Woo, or Ampsandsound
Bravo, Marcello. 👏
Thank you Fabio! 🙏
Great review 😍
What's your Favorite headphones for bass?
Tough call depends on the genre of music, HE100se has very detailed and articulate bass as does the LCD-5 but for electronic, edm, I really love the thesourceav.com/products/meze-audio-empyrean?variant=41237080965276
Hi Marcello,
Would love to hear your yr thoughts on pairing of HFM planarS with LYR3.. im confused about SS or tube pairing.. thinking between Singxer SA1 vs Lyr3.. i use arya and hd6xx with denafrips ares2 and Bifrost dacs..
btw- love this channel, already subscribed!
I think the LYR 3 pairs good with most headphones as it's pretty neutral. Harder to drive planar like the HE6 though isn't my fav with the LyR3. What's your budget?
@@MarcelloRostagni About 500$
LYR3 is a good option for that price range for most headphones.
Hey Marcello, another awesome video. I've got myself a pair of V2s for a couple of years now and love them.
If I might ask, which ZMF cable do you show on the video? 2k or Lektric?
Thank you @nicolas yance appreciate you!! shop.zmfheadphones.com/collections/cables/products/2k-copper
Hi there.
I'm new here.I just bought the HiFiman He1000se.The amp is valved and named Feliks Euforia Evo.The DAC is Toppng 90SE.All is brand new and still in burn-in.I don't like at all the HiFiman cable:horrible (and cheaper). Can I ask you an alternate balanced cable, pls? Maybe better OFC than silver because I like a mid a bit more warmer. Thanks a lot.
holy... awesome video...
Glad you liked it!
Is an HE1K SE almost twice better than an HE1K? The current price of HE1K V2 is USD 1999.
Please share the playlist. My he1000se arrives on friday
I have the Araya which I believe uses the same driver without the nicer finishes of the exterior. I would love to have the tidal Playlist you mention curating for the HE1000se
It uses the same driver of the he 1k not the one on the he 1kse
Nope, the Arya has a diffrent driver that is quite a bit more difficult to drive compared to the HE1000se, and the sound itself is obviously quite diffrent. There are some reviews here on RUclips that do a good job in comparing the two if you want.
@Nic Selander www.mrhifireviews.com/news/MRHifiReviewsMusicPlaylist
Nice job. I love the HE1000SE with Tool and Metal songs myself. The harmonic resonance of electric guitars on the HE1kse is sick
I have a Sony ZR-1 and it’s just bloody awesome for thick, meaty sub-bass that rattles your head, it makes you feel like you’re right there at a rock concert or in a movie theater, especially when paired with Sonys ta-z amp. That being said the bass and oomph of the drums can bleed over the guitars and vocals a bit so I ordered a open-box SE this week as a complement that hopefully does the reverse and let’s those small details that are drowned out shine.
@@mikeg2491 Did you get them? How did they compare?
@@adamgreenhill110 I did! and they are wonderful, but the total opposite of ZR-1, much more colder and analytical, but for that reason they complement each other well. Also while the bass doesn't thump as hard as the ZR-1 it reaches deeper into the sub-bass, listening to the Dune soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is nuts, it's like you're in an alien world. Full disclosure, I actually had one driver go out 2 weeks into owning it but Hifiman accepted it back at no charge, fixed it and sent it back to me, the QC issues I read online are probably legit but great customer service backing it which is the important thing.
@@mikeg2491 Ah Hifiman seem to be great for customer support. I have the Focal Utopia and Stellia, just ordered the HE1000 SE to compare... I'm only keeping one. The SE could be what I'm after. Thanks!
@@adamgreenhill110 I also have a Utopia, it’s very midcentric to my ears. Add the ZR1 in for warmth/lows and the SE for cold/highs that’s a perfect trifecta for all genres IMO. Ironically I also had QC issues on the Utopia too but they were a bit more arrogant in their customer service response to me lol. Still they chose to fix it at no cost.
Which one more suitable for studio mixing and mastering?
I cannot agree more to the fact thait all is a matter of taste. I have a Verite open, it is an excellent headphone but I am not very happy with the tonality or timber of the Verite. Even for tock music. I have listened to HEKse and I found the tonality much more enjoyable even for rock
Taste is a real thing in this hobby! What amp are you using with your Verite and what pads?
@@MarcelloRostagni I prefer Verite pads, my amps Benchmark HPA4 (solid state) and Mjolnir2 (tube). I prefer HPA4. I have listened to the HEKse with Hugo 2 ( as DAC and amp), result was amazing even on music mastered very loud (like a bigger bang from the Stones). The retailer told me that HEKse cable needs 200 h of burn-in. Before BI headphone is brighter
I would swap around pads a bit to see if you like how they tonally change the signature of your Verite and definitely experiment with some tube amps if you can.
@@christianpoivey2383 I really don't like the Verite pads on my VO. But the Universe Hybrid pads and Be2 are much better to my ears. Have you tried either of these pads yet?
Where did you get those awesome headphone stands from?
Hey @MaximumGAME the manufacturer stopped making them!! :( I am trying to get him to make another run for you guys.
Have you heard the Susvara? If so, how do they compare?
He hasnt tried them caused he said this is the most detailed H he has ever heard
I haven't heard them yet, but I am working on getting a pair for review!

Great review. Too bad you didn't have some third party cables to also try. You went to great lengths to try to optimize the front-end DAC and amp but the weakest link in the chain is the stock Hifiman cable. Looking forward to your future reviews!
They definitely are pretty crappy stock cables, I actually did run them with some custom cables a buddy made for me as well during the review process.
I hope you’re not saying the Hifiman cable is weak sonically because that makes no sense. The Hifiman cable is only bad because the coating feels disgusting.
@@chamade166 I wasn't speaking to anything sound related about cables; I was referring to the overall poor build quality of the hifiman cables vs. the custom cables my friend made for me.
I seriously hope the entire review of this headphone wasn't done on the Topping A90. That would taint the review completely. The Topping A90 is midfi rubbish and no self respecting headphone reviewer should be reviewing $2000+ high end headphones on midfi nonsense like the A90. The A90 measures well, sure, but measurements don't equate to sound quality, this is something that the Audio Science Review (Amir) REALLY needs to learn. Sound wise the A90 is like a 5/10, and here we have 9.5/10 quality headphone being reviewed on a 5/10 amp
The A90 has a flat soundstage (like just a wall of sound, but little depth or height to it, it's dynamics are gimped, it's low end is not that great. A head phone of this quality should be played on amps like:
Violectric
GSX-Mini
Some of Burson's stuff
Woo Audio
Benchmark HPA4
etc.
Listening to a Summit-Fi headphone like this on stuff like the Topping A90, Singxer SA-1, Jotunheim 2, etc. is not doing it justice. These are 5-6/10 amps. You wouldn't review a Ferrari after filling it up with 87 octane AM/PM gas
Great review detail however, you lost me quite a few times as your presentation lacks excitement, emotion and levity. If you were to break away from the scripted style with some improvisation of the noted expressions of passion it would better hold the viewers' attention. If this does not come natural to you as a presenter, please research the many techniques to practice for a more engaging speech. Cheers!
Noted!
@@MarcelloRostagni hope my comment didn't bum you out. Your content is so good, otherwise I would have not commented. BTW, training and presentation was my strong point so I know you will get it!
