I also liked that her marriage was also flawed. In other shows the dead husband is normally a saint or the grieving wife murdered him. I really like that they kept their marriage more on the realistic side. It also made Jens grieving process so complex. I really appreciated this.

@@trinaq There will never be a third season. It was cancelled.😔 I looked into it and saw that it got cancelled. I wish I was wrong. It's frustrating because we don't get quality shows with quality writing. I just finished watching Dead To Me and it is phenomenal. And I feel Netflix is a evil hypocrite by cancelling good shows and rewarding mediocrity garbage like Riverdale, Bridgerton and Emily in Paris and they're getting a two more seasons of romanticizing ignorance and insulting communities with bullshit stereotypes for "comedy". I firmly believe this show was mostly overlooked because it stars two actresses over 40 who delve into topics like divorce, revisiting your sexuality as a middle age woman, parenting, etc. A lot of early reviews when the first season came out likened this show to “something found on lifetime.” Which is disheartening and obviously missed the overall message and theme this show portrays. Christina Applegate was like my biggest idol in the 90s. Loved her in Married With Children, loved a lot of her movies, and upon seeing this on my Netflix home screen … I never watched something faster and immediately fell in love with it. The humor was exactly what I needed in a show, and they knocked it out of the park. Became my husband and I’s favorite show, the first one in a long time that we’d ask each other “heard anything about the final season?” as it had been so long a series had gripped us like this one did.
I wasn’t too impressed with the final season, but I 100% get why they took the direction they did … Applegate’s condition has taken over her life in the worst ways possible. It’s honestly heartbreaking to see what she has had to go through in such a short amount of time, but they worked around it seamlessly to where you wouldn’t even notice unless you knew.
Side note: this show has THE BEST soundtrack I’ve heard in a long time. All those old classics just fit it perfectly due to the characters. They seem like the two people that would listen to them when they play during scenes, and it fits. Like The Flamingos “I Only Have Eyes For You” is something that gives me chills upon hearing it largely due to how well it goes with the cinematography.
Really don’t know how people have still slept on Dead To Me - highly recommend it if anyone still hasn’t seen it.

I started watching the show for the exact same reason as you did and it pretty much had the same effect on me. I feel the friendly chemistry between Applegate and Cardellini is just too good here, like they have to have become best friends in real life, it's the only way I can explain them being so top-notch all of the time.
A couple more points that I find really worthy of praise here:
    - this show has some of the most natural swearing I've ever experienced in an American show. There is a LOT of swearing, but none of it feels like it's there to build cheap impact. It's just there because characters, especially Jen, are literally on edge all the time.
    - this show also treats bisexuality like it's literally nothing to talk about (which is the truth). The reveal of someone's bisexuality has exactly zero rippling effect, which I found incredibly refreshing.

    • @anakaliahaoa2551
      @anakaliahaoa2551 2 года назад +1

Yeah! I've only seen one show that even begins to rival it for planning (SyFy's 12 Monkeys, which also involves time a lot). Dark's so amazing at that.
Unfortunately, it also has a huge bar for entry. I'm usually very good at keeping characters and their relationships to each other straight, but Dark hit my limit, to the point where I had to go to the Wiki to confirm a few things. That Wiki is now fullll of spoilers, for obvious reasons, so I don't feel like there's any good resource for people trying to keep current-day/past-day versions of characters straight.
12 Monkeys has a lot of moving pieces, but the barrier to entry feels much smaller. It never got a ton of coverage, but going back to rewatch the show when I've seen it all makes me realise how much they were planning every reveal from episode one.

    • @dodgy_penguin

@@anakaliahaoa2551 I agree, for me I found myself so invested with the show it didn't bother me I had to watch a recap video of season 1's characters before starting season 2. However 95% of the cast is introduced in season 1 and so after that when you see them over and over again and get to know them better it gets a lot easier to register who everyone is. I've seen Dark twice now and it was really cool to notice stuff I didn't understand on the first watch. But I can see how not everyone would care to sit down and google characters to keep up so maybe that's why it didn't really blow up?

I've been saying for years, if you keep what's really going on from the audience, dropping vague hints that there's something happening beyond the obvious, then after a point it becomes impossible to _care_ because you don't actually understand the stakes. Giving the audience information creates tension _because now they know the consequences of characters' actions!_ That's huge.

It’s nice to hear that homie still has hope lol

Ok not related to this show BUT i need a video on marvelous mrs. Maisel!!! It's one of those shows that are just sooo well rounded. The writing, the acting, the directin, the cinematography, the costumes, just everything is sooo good. I find little to no flaw in it and i would say it's very consistent throughout the 4 seasons!! I mean i don't want to say it's perfect bit definitely the closest show to perfect for me.

Would love to see you cover Bojack Horseman. So many people thought that it was ‘haha that cartoon with the policeman who’s a cat’ to the point the writers leaned into it a bit, but it covers so many serious topics and the characters feel so human despite all being cartoons. It also has hilarious moments (there’s a whole episode involving improv that overlaps with the theme of Scientology that’s insane). It’s my favorite show, and you may enjoy it.

I completely agree, I've noticed that the discourse around popular shows/films tend to shy away from discussing the negatives. I remember when I suggested a bit I didn't like in Wonder Woman & got a million replied saying I was a hater, misogynist, superhero disliked etc despite (none of that being true) me really liking it, it just wasn't perfect.
I also think people not discussing the minutiae leads to people (& companies, looking at you live action remake Disney) mistaking what people like, don't like, what effects them & why. Like I agree with the quote "Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them." However you need to be able to actually understand that history, critically analyse it & come to accurate conclusions, in order not to both repeat mistakes, prevent them & recreate or take inspiration to create more positives.

I wanna watch this but I’ve dealt with the loss of my dad for the past 10 years so I know that this show will definitely be a tough watch, plus I’d deeply sympathize with Jen, I struggle with anger problems and grief a lot and seeing that on screen would make this show feel like a vessel for my anguish which would add to the hard to watch part of this show for me

Dead to me is amazing and I'm honestly really glad that it's underrated and not watched by lots of people. Because sometimes a fandom can destroy a show. Maybe it's pretentious of me but idk like I feel like the writers and showrunners are like often less likely to fuck something up if it doesn't have a massive audience. They aren't pressured by upper management to completely change the show to please a larger amount of people.

I finally got to watch this show and I love how real the main characters feel, that's not common anymore in shows, the relationships, the emotional beats, how they think, how they react, it mostly feels very relatable and organic. I mean in season 2 the tendency for coincidences and plot twists that many shows suffer from nowadays seeps in but it's still pretty great.

Thank you for the review! You say Gen isn't a bad person, but all the description you did of her and the few episodes that I saw really made me feel like she is. That and the lack of consistency in the tone of the scenes really made me having a very hard time with this show. I just don't manage to appreciate watching shows when I can't empathize at least a bit with the characters (same issue with Inventing Anna).

I know you'll prolly not read that but I'd love it if you reviewed "Bloodline" : it's an absolutely chilling drama for two seasons and it has an half-baked third season that doesn't resolve anything. The way it's written reminds me of classical tragedy in the way it's built and it drags you in its murky depths slowly and painfully, and it's brillant. Until it's not because Netflix didn't want to pay taxes and killed the show halfway through the third season

Honestly, I haven't related to a character so much in a long time as I did to Judy, both in the good ways and the bad (though thankfully not AS bad as Judy's bad lol). Okay I just started the video but two quick things:
One, my favorite RUclipsr reviewing the niche show that I’m obsessed will always warm my heart!!
And two, this show worked for so many reasons but I think what’s overlooked in a lot of the discourse around this show (again, I just started this video, so sorry if you touched it on it already!!) but it’s the beautiful arc Judy and Jen take to become the other half of what they were both missing. Jen helped Judy turn into a confident, strong person who doesn’t need to rely on abusive validation from the people who claim to love her. And Judy helped Jen understand it’s okay to feel emotions other than anger and opening up doesn’t have to be so scary. A lot of people talk about how their friendship doesn’t work because they’re so different or they point out how Jen should never have forgiven Judy for what she did. But, at least in my opinion, it’s because of their differences and how they helped each other work through their respective trauma that their relationship and arcs work so damn well. Judy and Jen’s relationship is the second chance at real love they both never got from previous partners. And, whether they stay platonic or become the gay mom team of our dreams, their dynamic will always work regardless
    Okay back to the video!!!

I haven't finished the entire video yet so maybe you touch on it later but it's very funny to me you mention that Judy is very much The Tony stark type but described Jen as someone who always gets back up and to whom failure isn't an option without comparing her to captain America!
An angry and hurt Captain America but their dynamic functions very similarly and i think that's what made both so enjoyable

I watched this show because I wanted something similar to my all time favourite show killing eve. It's very rare to have such an intense female dynamic that is basically the heart of the show on tv, and whilst killing eves is romantic dead to me's is platonic. Not to mention in both shows the women are very complex and make it difficult yet easy to root for. Thats why I love them, and I love that you're talking about DTM cause I don't think I've seen an essay on it before. I'd love to see one on killing eve too! I loved this show from the moment it came out (and totally clicked bc of Lisa Cardellini too). I skipped the second season for a few months, but I finally got back to it and just finished it. Im so happy with how they went about plotlines, and their friendship. The show portrays a great friendship between adult women so well and you just get deeper into the characters every episode. There're no...polished spots, no overly idolized characters. Pretty much everyone has flaws. Its a little raw without making you despair.
