Bob & Connie Schmitt are currently members of the Naples, FL-based Porsche Club Paradise Region Gruppe, as well as Suncoast Region PCA. They are great people and still own amazing Porsches today. :-)
A great model -- the 356 Porsche Speedster TYP540.... I remember Bob and Connie Schmitt's Red Speedster at many Porsche Club of America Chesapeake Challenge Concours events in the Baltimore, MD area...way before the 'Cars and Coffee' events were created). Thanks for sharing this historic video... Vroom, Vrooom!
Holy retro Batman. Ironically, as I was driving my son to school this morning, he eyed one of these and asked about it. I was telling him about it a bit. I’ll probably show him this. He will be underwhelmed at the performance figures compared to the modern cars he knows about. But he liked the style.
I'll take a 55 speedster over most modern sports cars .... Porsche Speedster (F4-97ci - 60HP) 11.5 seconds 55 T-bird (V8 292CI 193HP) 11.5 seconds 55 Corvette (V8 251CI 195HP) 8.5 55 Corvette (S6 235CI 150HP) 10.5 Now if they threw in the optional 1600 S (110hp) or Carrera GS engine (128hp) Porsche 110/128HP 1675lbs Corvette 195HP 2850lbs
Adrian S well, it would be worth more than any other car you mentioned generally, and many modern cars. But I don’t think people cross shop a speedster with modern sports cars generally.
356's were high average speed cars.. just as fast through the corners as down the straights, good fuel economy ( less pit stop for fuel) light weight( less stops for tires) beat most cars in their class and quite a few waaay above their class.
@@moejr1974 I'd say fast is an understatement. 10 sec in a 0-60 was considered good in the early 80s when this was filmed. This got a tiny four-cylinder boxer in the early 1950s, 10 sec *was* fast.
Dave Hamilton owned #3 Speedster. We were friends, I had a 1953 coupe with a 64 SC engine, big bore.... Anyhow, Speedster was the earliest one on the road. 1 or 2 was in the museum, but he other totaled. It was banged up, had a VW engine. When he died in June 1987 the car was just becoming Valuable. I think it went to his brother who arranged with, I think, Rennsport Werkraft, Santa Clara, CA. Then, maybe $20-30k, now? A $ million? Idolatry knows no limits. Just strip your convertible D but, nooooo. Anyhow Im sure it has a good home. Dave died too young,45 ish.
Originally $2,995. "And is worth well over 5 times that today." HA!! If only we could get it in 2020 for $15K! I haven't seen one sell for less than $150K in many years!

Always reminded me of a horseshoe crab.
But a nice horseshoe crab....
It was only worth $15k back when this was filmed? Wish I was old enough to buy all of them back then.
15,000 in 1983 was a lot of money.
That would be about $40,000 after inflation.
That still aint shit compared to what idiots are willing to pay for one these days.
Yea try around 100× that now
@DC Williams dude it ain't junk it's a speedster James Dean made 'em what they were though

It's a Porsche, of course the performance figures are underwhelming.

0-60 in 10 seconds = Speedster. I love retro reviews., we've come a long way.
It was the 50's. That was fast for the day
T bird 11.5, 6 cyl vette 10.5, V8 vette 8.5 (97ci vs 292, 235, 251ci)

I wonder if they still own this 356?
probably too old to drive
I feel like everyones names in the 80s were Bob and Connie
I loved the black one in Top Gun that Kelly Mc Gillis drove.
Will always love a retro review. Always makes me wonder where did time go. Miss old stuff.
Saw one in light blue this past summer, was blown away by how it looks in person

In my opinion, the 356 is still the best looking Porsche ever made.

Oh man, I've been hoping for more 90s, yes please!!!!!

Retro retro review
James Dean had this car. Then he upgraded to a new 550 Spyder which he died in.
Double Retro
It was only worth around $25,000 in 1983, would love to know what it’s worth in 2020
A #1 is $145K, #2 is $108K
25k in 1983 was pretty good money though, even more when you consider classic cars weren't as much popular back then as now
👍
Hope that couple didn’t sell it for 15.000 dollars back then
Who's here after watching "Ford vs Ferrari"??
How is the dudes shorts shorter then his ol ladies?
That classic just keeps getting better. Unfortunately Top Gun and Kelly McGillis ... well 😴
James Deans death made them popular in America 🙁
And it wasn't even the same model
@@claudiobizama5603 Porsche 550 Spyder...
@ not all true. But good try 😒🙄
3000 Speedsters produced plus 2768178694164654 Beetles with fiber glass bodies that pretend to be this car
Last year of the Speedster was 1959, not 1957.
Groan. Back when men wore shorter shorts than women.
