To the untrained eye, you wouldn't even believe that rig is from 1991. It looks so good, and almost 2000's in style. Mack did fantastic with this truck.
My truck has the regular speedometer and tachometer, along with the usual fuel/DEF, water temperature, voltage, engine oil pressure, primary and secondary air pressure gauges and adds engine oil temperature, air suspension pressure, transmission oil temperature, both drive axle oil temperature, brake application pressure. I'm missing turbo boost, DPF level, air filter, fuel filter and economy gauges.
I spent close to a million miles in a CH driving for UPS. It was my first truck with power steering and cruise control. It really was one hell of a truck.
tn18977 they will definitely set you back in your seat but the usable RPM range on those big diesels is relatively short. You have a lot of gears to stir and even just the bobtail truck can still weigh up to 20,000 + lbs. they are torque monsters but certainly not speedy off the line. :)
@@SavageBunny1 That would be very risky. The trailer could lose its rear grip and snap around in FRONT of you! If you hear a squealing sound, look in the rearview mirror and see your own damn trailer coming towards you, you're screwed. Truckers call it a "jackknife" and it's their worst nightmare. The trailer will continue to slide until it strikes the back of the semi and cause it to spin out. If you're lucky, it won't roll over. I've seen this happen on the highway between Texas and Oklahoma once and it's SCARY. The semi rolled over. Fortunately, he escaped with only minor injuries.
"...gauge package comprehensive enough to make a 747 jealous..." Maybe because the 747 has 365 switches and 5 gauges, all which do not pertain to flying.
That was great, seeing how the Motorweek's pro driver, that does the track there with different vehicles, couldn't master the 12-gear box, on the Mack! Then laughing soo much! I love it! And, this stunned me that there was actually a semi tractor on this show! Awesome!
41.5 seconds @ 40 mph is pretty damn impressive for a big-ass truck with trailer. That's only 3-4 times slower than a legitimately fast car, but how many thousands of pounds more does the rig weigh? Way more than 3-4 times, that's for sure.
Do some research slick. Gasoline engines produce more harmful emissions than a diesel. But I guess you clearly watched a show that brainwashed you to think different.
Gasoline engines do not produce more harmful emissions than Diesel. Diesel emits far more particulate matter and has all the other junk associated with gasoline engines. Smog in europe is terrible because of that fact.
The government screws everything up. They're not realizing the damage being done to diesel engines even new one. Sulphur helped with extra lubrication in the engine
I remember being behind those school buses with the exhaust pointing straight rearward out if the back bumper pumping out all kinds of disgusting black smoke right into my cars vents. Ridiculous !

Speaking of semis I miss seeing the other kind of semis "cabovers" on the roads here in the USA. Back in those days I saw a big mix of cabovers & conventional cabs. Now these days the only cabovers I see around are fire trucks, garbage trucks, yard trucks, & some box trucks.
I want one for my daily commute and grocery trips, trailer included. It might even fit in my driveway. Getting it situated in said driveway might be challenging given the layout, but I'll make it work one way or another, trees be damned.
Michael Gillette there aren't any they all cost good money to repair. What you fail to realize is that parts availability for a Mack triple countershaft and an Eaton RTLO are completely different. abelucious I might be able to sprint an 1/8 mile faster on foot lol
yeah,, they are officially ORIGINAL GANGSTERS for that lol

should've burned all 8 out back first
Was kind of looking forward to a slalom test tho🤣

Theses days just add LED running lights and projector hid lights and it will fit right in 2018
Actually Mack still makes this model in 2020 but its more of a off road truck.
Yup
Mack was a little behind the times with the aerodynamics... KW had their T600 debut in 84'
@@natashaspiner42 they said it took them 10 years up finish it
Finally enough gauges for John Davis!
Mack should design a car. That thing still looks good today 26 years later.
Yep 2yrs from your comment and this truck is Running stronger and looks better than most new trucks specially the pro stars in my opinion
Not wishing to be controversial, but current day American trucks are crude and old fashioned compared to European models.

It's crazy I was born May 1989 & can remember watching this with my grandpop as far back as 1994 on up!
I almost expected to see them take this onto the twists and turns of Roebling Road Raceway
I was going to comment about a helmet and then they actually wore one...hopefully ironically.
Or at least to the straightaways of Pocono International Raceway!

I don't think the Test Drivers for Motorweek have any brown pants....
Amazing how little styling has changed on these over the years. You wouldn't look twice if you saw this truck on the road today.
Why fix what ain't broke
Mostly because American trucks don't update much. Other than the aero models.
New vans have 360 degree view cameras and collision avoidance.
Theres no reason to restyle big trucks the way cars get restyled. It seems like most big truck designs are used for at least 20 years
Funny they mentioned electronic log integration but this truck is actually exempt from the current ELD mandate.
I just love how multipurpose the Inline-6 configuration can be. Cars, trucks, motorcycles even!
Still a great looking truck today! Absolute classic and I still see them all over.

ok but what's the Doug Score?
I don't think it would score very well in the weekend category...
Interesting quirks?
Doug would give it a 0 for acceleration and would RAVE about the features, just go on and on, and then give them a '6.' Ok Doug.
practicality is a most definite 10
You can read about it on his Autotrader blog
