This book really affacted me on a deep level. It felt like the characters actually were real people. The characters felt so relatable, it actually felt like that the main character could have been you as a kid. The book reminded me of how evil the world can be, how the innocent and pure bond of friendship can be destroyed by demons in the form of humans. When I read the ending I was filled with hopelessness and agony, it reminded me of how unfair the world is, there was no redemtion, no consolation to be found, just the cold and gruesome reality of a dead child.
I heard the author say that the reason he didn’t name the main character is so anyone reading the book could feel like they’re the main character in the book.
Ooh that actually makes a lot of sense!
this book was a great part of my childhood when my best friend and I were first getting into creepypasta. It's a good book to bond over especially when we finished it at roughy the same time. Aaahhhh memories...
Oh man! I remember creepypasta! This is definitely very reminiscent of that!
Just read this the other day and was blown away. The order of the vignettes playing out is really something, there are some plot holes here and there but over all it’s a great read from friendship to first love to growing up to tragedy it covers a lot of terrain in a brilliant way. Loved your review hope to hear more from you.
I wasn't sure about reading this book because of the goodreads rating (not good, not bad). After your review i bought it and i am so happy i did ! Thank you so much
Ahh thank you so much!! That makes me so happy to hear that! I do these videos for that exact purpose, so I’m so happy to help!
Perhaps he isn't named so readers can either see themselves, or someone they love, as the main character.
I dont know but i would guess that if this theory is right, the MC wasnt described physically either- or was described only very minimally.
Yup! That’s what a ton of other people have said! Apparently the author said that as well.
I listened to a narration of this book a little over a year ago and I still think about it to this day. I’ve been meaning to get the book, so thanks for the review !! Hope you’re doing well :)
This book definitely sticks with you! Thanks so much for watching the video and I’m glad you enjoyed. I hope you’re doing well too! :)
He also talks about living close to a Winn-Dixie, which is a grocery store unique to the south.
I just finished this and holy shit I wasn’t ready for the ending!😮
The only hint of the location is a mention of Winn Dixie supermarket in the book
Does the book contain all stories like boxes and maps and screens?
No, it’s formatted like a typical book.
I have never heard of this book so now I need to go put it on my Goodreads list!
now I've fallen into the depths of 'no sleep' reddit!
Yesss! It’s so awesome! ‘No sleep’ is awesome! You can spend hours on there, I was on there last night 😂
You don't share your reddit ID do you?? I know a lot of people kind of like to stay anonymous over there.
the name thing is a reference to Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
Oooh, good to know! I haven’t read that one yet, but I’ve seen people mention it.
4:14 my theory is that he wanted us to fill in the blanks with our own memories, immerse ourselves into the plot. I pictured my kindergarten, my old house, and my old cat.
That’s what a lot of people said!
I thought the name of the character was the authors name, Dathan because it started out as his reddit post… but i’m not sure! That’s what I thought going through but I absolutely agree that in the book they intentionally avoid putting the main characters name for the creep factor 😮
I loved your review!! I just finished the book :)
Yeah I get what you’re saying! Since that’s the way no sleep works in that whoever is posting is the “main character.” I think I was expecting a name change since it turned into a novel I guess? I think someone else said that he didn’t name the character so people could put themselves in the character’s shoes and relate better, which makes tons of sense too!
Thanks so much for watching! 🥰
I have the book I'm excited to read it!!! Is it very spooky to read alone?😊🐼🦄😊❤️
Definitely very spooky to read alone!! I hope you enjoy!
Great job. More of this. Keep practising :)
One of the only books to make me cry ngl
Did anybody see the dark shadow passing behind her… no just me.. okay 🥲
The ending fucked me up
Right? I never saw the ending coming at all!!!!
Erin Megan and just the fact that the Penpal has Josh for 2 fucking years brings a tear to my eye. He dyed his hair and made him dress in the main characters young clothes, what else could he have done? Just the thought makes me shutter
SeMTeX Plague I know exactly what you mean. This book is sooo good and messed up at the same time! Such a crazy plot.
I just finished this book and I’m a little confused with ending. What was the twist everyone is talking about?!
@@tay_785pretty sure the ending was just josh dying (which imo is a major twist)
Got this book because of your review. Glad I did. Good book. Really sad and creepy. Terrible project idea
I feel bad for laughing at ur comment
So who is the killer
It's relatively rare for me to read female authors, lately I have been reading Molly Tanzer. I don't think she qualifies as "Horror" genre, more like "historic fantasy"?? At least what I read so far. But she keeps the pacing pretty good and it's a fun read. She's doing one of those 3-part series like deals, and the first one I am reading is the last one she wrote, related to Prohibition in the Long Island area around 1927.
Rubin4749 this isn’t a female author. This is a male.
Rubin4749 The author of this story is male.
@@beatricelove45 I was recommending Molly Tanzer~~~who is *FEMALE* . Do you need remedial classes in reading comprehension??
Rubin4749 I’m talking about penpal. So was Megan. You mentioned you don’t read much female writers but we both mention that Penpal author is male so you’re good to read it, if that was any indication on your curiosity of the story.
Rubin4749 Did that give you more context for my comment? Or was it too remedial and incomprehensible for you?
....And u don't learn anything about his father either
Glad i read this book before listening to this
So many spoilers
Thanks for the comment. I don’t think anything I said was super spoiler heavy or went into too many details of the book. Most of the information I gave was from very early into the story.
I love the book but it made me so sad. I was depressed for about half a month.
it is a very depressing story!
zomg ur so dorky- passes out-
