  • Enjoy a relaxing cab ride down the Eden Valley Railway onboard Thumper, see the driver control the train but also enjoy the scenery with the second camera on the front!
    This journey takes us from Southfields back to Warcop where the main hub for the Eden Valley Railway can be found. Set in the rolling hills of Cumbria it is one of the most spectacular standard gauge railways I have had the pleasure of visiting. Although it doesn't currently have any steam locomotives it really doesn't matter at all here. Thumper (205009) is a spectacular and charming loco and it offers something completely different from what other heritage lines are offering up.
    The lasting memory I have from my visit is how the staff and volunteers interact with visitors, they let the children do the announcements over the loudspeaker on the train, wave the flags, pull the signal levers and are always on hand to dish out information about the locos and the location.
    Of course Thumper, the DMU is the star of the show here. Originally built in 1957 at Eastleigh as two car unit 1109 consisting of driving motor brake second open (DMBSO) 60108 and driving trailer composite (DTC) 60808, and classified as a 2H. One of a batch of 18 built for the Portsmouth to Salisbury and Andover service and the Alton to Winchester and Southampton service, increasing passenger numbers meant that a third car was added to each, the TSO added to 1109 being numbered 60658.
    When TOPS was introduced 1109 became 205 009 and it continued to work for British Rail and Connex until late 2004 when it was purchased for preservation on the Eden Valley Railway, being delivered in March 2005 by rail via the link between the Eden Valley Railway and the Settle & Carlisle line at Appleby.
    205009 is currently in service and operates the majority of passenger services at the Eden Valley Railway. Having been in a dark green livery (on the passenger side, anyway) whcih was applied to cover up the graffiti it received in the south of England when it first arrived at Warcop it has now been repainted into a rather brighter, if non-authentic, livery.

    Nice to see and hear these old Thumpers in preservation. Funny to think that 30 years back I used these trains regularly. They were quite old even then.

      It does make me feel quite old, something I remember is now classed as heritage! I am in talks to get a camera inside a restored pacer soon, the marmite of the loco world. It seems every man and his dog has some sort of memory on one of them!

    Nice video. Is this line planning on eventually joining up with the line at Kirkby Stephens the straithmore railway I think its called I'm sure I read somewhere that was the plan?

      I do believe that is still the eventual goal, the longer the line the better if you ask me, especially in such beautiful landscapes such as this!

    I do like thumpers but the way you filmed this made me feel quite queasy. For me, it would probably had been better if you'd faded out the cab camera once it got going.

      I can see why it isn't everybody's cup of tea angle wise. I will be uploading the footage from the buffer without the cab at some stage soon, the landscape seemed too stunning not to have it full screen. It isn't often people get to put cameras in the cab of a DMU like this (and they won't be around forever) so I did want to keep it on for the full journey but always knew it wouldn't be for everybody.

    Geez, I just watched this video ad-free not 5 minutes ago and, on selecting it from my viewing history to look at again, not so much to view again immediately but to respond to comments, I got two accursed ads, even though I have Ad-Block functioning on my browser. Anyway, I come back here to thank you for your subscription to my Trams & Trains channel. Also to note that, as you've stated, the two videos, the main and the overlay are just a touch out of synch, yes, synchronising the two can be a hit-and-miss affair. The last video I uploaded was of a visit to Broadmeadow Railway Station on 27th February, using the main plus insert trick, it can be a finnicky job to get the two clips' audio to line up exactly.

    Time to compare notes, do you use the audio track(s) to synchronise the insert(overlay) video with the main video? That's certainly the method I use. it works for me!

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  2 года назад

      I do, interestingly this one is somehow ever so slightly out and I can't quite work out why. But yeah I will always find something loud like a horn and match both spikes, it does make it a lot easier. I think I am going to end up uploading this one again when I have a spare evening, one camera is about 1/2 a second ahead of the other.

      @@TheTouristLine Yeah, you end up with a somewhat ethereal audio effect. Usually, after lining up the two videos, I then mute the insert's audio to avoid that ethereal effect.
