Olivier Latry is one of three organists at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. He is one of the finest concert organists in the world today. On October 7, 2007 Mr. Latry invited JAV Recordings into the loft at Notre Dame and allowed us to film him playing the Introit to the 11:30 Sunday Mass. This music was spontaneously created by Mr. Latry in the tradition of the great French organists. This was recorded with a Cannon HV20 and a pair of microphone hung in the Nave of the Cathedral.
On October 14, 2007 Mr. Latry recorded Vierne's 6th Symphony and a 3 movement symphony on hymn tunes at Washington National Cathedral. This CD will be released in the Spring of 2008 and can be purchased from www.pipeorgancd...
Mr. Latry can be contacted through his agent for recitals at www.concertorga...

M. Latry is a genius, you have to listen to the opening of the mass to realize that this entire piece is him improvising on the theme of the day's mass. I think we will discuss him in music courses a hundred years from now.
We need a full transcription of this one
12yrs on and still one of his best improvisations. 7:40 onwards is superb!!
The finest and the most powerful pipe organ in the world
The superior sound was because I was allowed to use the mics hanging in the nave and I bought equipment to allow me to use real microphones with my camera - also bought a new camera so I can make better videos. Thanks for your kind words
that organ..that sound...must be a dream for any organist....
This man is a rockstar. I just LOVE him... 🥰😘😄😁😁
When an organist plays such heavenly "spontaneous" music such as this, it confirms in my mind that there is an awesome God who gives the gift of music! I am simply amazed at the great display of musicianship that has been displayed here. Keep playing the magical organ - THE KING OF INSTRUMENTS. Wayne from Australia.
One of my goals in life is to go to Paris and hear this magnificent instrument and organist live.
The way he finally incorporates the theme of that day’s chant, Dieu Regne, at 9:12, and especially at 9:31, which he has been building to for the entire improvisation, is awe inspiring. I don’t think I have ever heard an improvisation with better structure
En fait le thème circule très tôt dès 1'50 clairement).
One of his best improvs. He is a master of goose-bump-raising modulations. And great structure on this one.
I was blessed to hear his performance once in Westminster Cathedral, got his signature on the back of my YouCat - Catechism for the Youth.
Latry is great, but also the instrument is incredible.
Notice the combination management possibilities that it has.
Superb player, superb instrument. If the voice of God can be in some way imagined, the sound of this organ can fit perfectly in a believer's imagination.
I heard Latry play in Erfurt, Germany, when I was on vacation there. I also met him. A wonderfully gifted and very humble performer.
Wow, I am sad. I hope one day I am able to attend mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral.
I love the 8' Vox Humana!!! Beautiful!
Forget Sunday Mass. Olivier provides the spiritual experience. Stupendous!
I was truly delighted to meet and hear Mr. Latry last night in Plano, Texas at
Christ United Methodist Church. I came away on a "spiritual high!" The Dedication Concert of the church's Reuter Pipe Organ Opus 2235 was truly a memorable experience.

Mother of God!!! This is stunning on my computer. What must be the effect in person!!!!
Amazing performance
Paul Williams Thank you.
Best Improvisation I've heard.
Like Millions of people around the World - the Fire at Notre Dame was so difficult to watch on TV. I am so glad that reports are coming out that the Organ was not destroyed. May GOD be with the Parisians as they re-build the Cathedral.
Lance ( Organist across the pd... ) † ♫♪♫
I went to mass in Notre Dame de Paris the last month and, even though I don't speak much french and couldn't understand much, the music the organist played was so beautiful and made it such a great experience. I would recommend to every Catholic who is planning on visiting this cathedral to have mass here
People, who don't know music like that may say it sounds chaotic, but there is sooooo much poetry in it...!!! Great!
Ahhh, my heart aches for this man today. I do hope the organ can be rebuilt.
One of the greatest organists on this planet !
Brilliant!! This guy is a pro.
I hope this magnificent instrument survived the fire at Norte Dame today!
I am an organist, of too many years. Enough of them to be able to say: this is astonishing, I've not heard anything in performance that would challenge this brilliant improvisational skill. A great many improvisations have a rhapsodic form, something of a crazy quilt of ideas pasted together. This extraordinary example is of whole cloth. The man is, in a word, brilliant. Gloriously colorful and exciting work. On ONE manual! [thanks to electronics but who's counting]. Bravissimo!
I really hope the fire did not destroy this magnificent instrument.
The instrument was unharmed it might need a lot of restoration but the fire was in the back of the Cathedral, the organ is up front, in the gallery.
This whole peice is just mind blowing on so many levels!
Had the pleasure of seeing this magnificent performer play a recital on the grand organ of Liverpool Cathedral. He mastered it perfectly, a superb evening !
WOW, what a wonderful performance, and such an intoxicating piece of music, I adore it !!!!
!!!! It is hard to beat the fantastic reverberation of the large cathedrals.
I love the way he sits and waits for the sound to bounce back. Luvs me some pipe organ!
OMG it is adorable, love this epic dark powerful organ, super
I'm sitting here crying that no one will ever hear this beatiful instrument again. so sad.
This was in 2007 and where are you now?? Thank you so much for your gift!!
Fantastique, véritable virtuose. Bravo!
Never heard anything this powerful before, emotionally or literally, its perfect! Latry is the *KING* of the king of instruments!!
Thank you much for uploading this amazing performance = ' )
Love how the organ shakes the floor, adds to the suspense of the music! :-D
We wish you to return to this magic table, Sir !
Cèst ma reve de vous retrouver la, Monsieur !
Deutschland ist so traurig... Notre Dame !
He really enjoys his craft - bravo!
Great clip -- Latry is a genius. But LET THE REVERB RING AT THE END! Don't cut it off like that -- aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!
Urbie4 SORRY!
what s going on
I fully agree. Let the sounds ring till they decay naturally. Even applause before the echos are all gone is irritating to me. This not a teen age rock concert.
Urbie4 I know right!!! what the hell guys
Superb!
Thanks for a real show. What an artist.
Warren Pugh Thank you - I think he is pretty good too
God created this man with the purpose to play the organ... I really love listening to this music!
M. Latry rocks my world.
Este grande músico já esteve no Brasil. Simplesmente Soberbo. A Rede Cultura de Televisão gravou um recital de órgão há alguns anos atrás, na íntegra, com este grande artista.
Dazzling! Latry is a unique genius. I grew up with the improvisational brilliance of Gerre Hancock at St. Thomas, Fifth Avenue in New York. There is no greater art form than great improvisation!.
So true.....unlike the printed score, it is directly from the heart.
Très intéressant! Bravo, Monsieur Latry.
This is one of greatest organs and organists in the world today. Thank you for sharing these works. CVD
Thanks, I love promoting the King of Instuments
And now, the Notre Dame has burnt down. May we all respect the wonderful cathedral it was.
So perfectly wonderful. I adore.
Oh wow I really do like the sound of this masterpiece of an organ! Unique, all together, poweful, bombastic, silent, harmonic. This organ is magic especially with this great master of an organist
Magnifique concert !Monsieur Latry .
We heard him last week in San Francisco, and he played a superb concert !
John Carleton Sacramento Ca.
I love 7:20 when the Voix Humaine comes on and he plays a portion of the chant on a light reed stop in the pedal. Great stuff!
My prayers for everyone at Notre Dame amid the devastation of the fire at that beautiful cathedral.
He by far, is one of the best they have. He is blessed with the holy spirit to be able to play so well. Give glory to God in the highest!
Thank you for saving this Improvisation.
BRAVO!
maîtrise absolue de l'harmonie, de la structure, des timbres, sens de l'instrument hors du commun...que dire, qui n'ait été dit et redit sur ce grand monsieur ? Immense respect et admiration renouvelés.
This impovisation should be transcribed to sheet music... it's a pity I'm not capable enough for that. This is one for the ages.
Great recordings of this instrument gives my subwoofer a workout. :)
We were blessed to have him live here in Tucson, Arizona at the Catalina Methodist Church for a concert last night. Thank you so much for your passion sir!
You are most welcome thanks for your kind words
I listen to this more than is considered normal, probably... I still can't believe it was imrovised.
I am a believer, but terribly "back-slidden". Even so, this guy is the "Eddy Van Halen" of the Pipe Organ!
Please, GOD, save the Cathedral.
Wow love that massive jarring chord at
0:52 seconds and the quieter section at 1:28 but my favourite is the build up that starts at 3:06 and climaxes at 3:34. The harmonies are so typically French. They love their augmented and diminished chords!
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Latry at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, WA during a master class for the University of Washington. Very expressive playing, and pleasant character.
Fantastic--Sunday at Notre Dame is a must.
Gigantic!
Amazing. It's great to see Organ videos over the web. Liked Daniel Roth in Widor 6 too.
At the beginning the acoustics are amazing.
What a blessings Olivier is to the entire world-of-music. CVD
I definitely love the transition between 5:32 and 5:39 as well as the rythmic made on pedals at 6:21 !
And the crescendos-decrescendos ... I'm speechless
Wow!
Merci beaucoup!! Mr. Latry a son orgue a Notre Dame!! Cette musique et incroyables...il y a tellment de harmonie bizare!
Thank you so much!
This man is amazing. I recently heard him at the inaugural recital in the new Catholic Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, USA.
I visited Notre Dame on Sunday 15th November - the music sounded very like this during the procession. The atmosphere was incredible.
this guy is off the hook!!!!!! awesome!
That is the most great improvisation i have ever heard ! it like as it is composed (very clear formal structure !!)
i love the organ of notre dame!!
and olivier it's a great organ player!!
I'm curious, is the original recording of this improvisation in higher quality, but had to be uploaded in lower quality? (Internet speeds have increased drastically since 2007.) If so would you upload this again in higher quality?
RUclips does not allow me to replace the video. If you want to see and hear a better compression look for the same video on Vimeo.com
+pipe-organ Thanks. I forget that Vimeo exists at times.
youtube compresses the audio slightly and cuts some very high frequencies - I do not believe that vimeo does. vimeo.com/pipeorgan
Brillant !
what total talent, that was great to listen to,
Latry is a genius, awesome!
this blows me away.
absolutely unbelievable
I love that organ.
this is awesome
This is organ improvisation to cover the entrance procession. If you listen carefully it's clear that this merges into the entrance chant 'Dieu Regne' search it on here.
To all at JAV and especially Joe- keep up the excellent work - it has opened up a whole new world to me - THANK YOU SO MUCH . With best regards Adrian McLaughlin Northern Ireland
A Marvelous Organ....magnific
Thee best thing I've heard. Olivier is Obivously a fantasic organists and makes it look easy, when it's not.
What a great work , the OrganistOLIVIER LATRY is absolutly maried in this instrument ... wonderful !!!
Of all of the pipe organ music I've ever heard, this ranks with the best.
Majestic
Absolutely, as if he is playing to the Heavens. At times its like he's making love to the instrument.
This is astonishing. Listening to this I forgot what all other music sounds like.
This was fun to watch!
I was blessed to hear Olivier Latry inaugurate my Cathedral's Restored Skinner organs in St Paul Minnesota. He just blew me away. Of the 4 organist that took over for the late pierre cochereau Olivier Latry and Yves Devernay are my favorite.
absolutely hypnotic. this is the reason these instruments are worth every penny. if only i had this talent.
