What's your favorite affordable drum mic? Which ones do you want me to check out?
Drum set with only sm57's lol
I like the EV PL 33 on Kick and a pair of T.Bone RB 500 ribbon microphones as overhead or room mics. I would be great to see a comparison between the RB500s and the SE Electronics X1Rs.
Audix Dp7 drum mic set.
Absolutely amazing mics.
Just replace the drum clamps for stands.
In the last months I fell in love with Shure PG52. It's kinda poor man's Beta 52, but with the right placement it actually just needs a cut around 250 hz - and I like it better than the Beta 52. As you can guess, I prefer less pre-eqd mics.
I don't know if they are still made, but Samson had a drum mic kit with 7 mics ($350 approx), and the Kick mic the Qkick was impressive sounding for such a cheap mic.
Another superb video from Kristian! You Rock my friend!!
I love how you are renowned as one of the best modern producers and you clearly aren’t trying to compete but trying grow the artist community and humble enough to appreciate the diverse talents of others like Kristian! Much respect to both of you.
@@evanjames8748 wow! Thanks ever so much for your wonderful comment! Yes, Kristian is an amazing talent! I learn so much from him!
For some one who's setting up a recording studio, this kind of video is VITAL, CRUCIAL, VERY IMPORTANT!!
Thank you so flipping much, Kohle!
Your channel is amazing, man! Greetings from Brazil
A lot of people don't realize this, but speakers and microphones are basically the same things (they are both transducers). I made my own kick drum mic out of an old solid state combo amp that I no longer needed. Just ripped the amp out and wired the 8" speaker to an XLR cable. Augmented with a room mic it can give you all the thump you need on a recording. It's a lot easier to do if you have an amp that has a TRS connection to the speaker. You can just unplug the speaker from the amp, plug that into a direct box, and do your standard XLR from the box to your interface. Just put the speaker in front of the kick like any other mic and get to work!
Speaker mics are great!
You’re videos have been making me happy. Just picked up a pair of sE VR1’s and love them!
So glad I found out about Kohle through URM because all these videos are so goddamn useful :)
Those were the days on the URM channel. I was doing a lot more drum content there. Need to catch up on this channel drumwise.
@@KohleAudioKult I like your current content better than URM; this feels more like buddies hanging out and dicking around with tech :)
Watches video on cheap drum mics.... Leaves wanting a $1700 pair of condensers 😩
Damn! Sorry! So you liked the RM17s?
@@KohleAudioKult Ha no need to apologize it was a great comparison and I liked the SE stuff, I just like to use overheads as mostly cymbal mics and I thought that the RM17s sounded great for that application. Cheers!
Great shout out for the Se Electronics mics! Been looking into them for drums recording and this video really helps to win me over! And winning those X1 ribbons would be a very nice start.
Even if I don’t win, I do greatly appreciate the breakdown and comparisons.
That room sounds killer.
Beyer M201s are great snare mics. A sweet upper register.
It's my go-to snare mic, paired with a 441 as snare bottom mic.
I finally bought one, and it's in the post at the moment. Definitely not what would be classified as an "affordable" mic though! I'm very interested to see how it fares against my Telefunken M80...
@@nitraus666 441 is a great choice for bottom snare. This is a, “why didn’t I think of that,” moment.
@@nitraus666 I use the same combo😊👍.
This sounds absolutely incredible. Love the tone of the drums
I really love Kristians Videos! Its always a pleasure to watch. I hope he never stops!
Thank you for your hard work making all these videos. They have been my main source of information as I'm learning to record myself.
I’ve gotten good results with e604s for toms surprisingly. Back when the audio techinca atm25 was only 100$ used those were great. Too bad too many people found out how great they are and. Now they are 200+
Atm25 was also surprisingly cool on guitar cabs!
Great content as always! I think SE Electronics still don't get the recognition that they deserve, great mics especially considering the price tag
I use Lewitt and Se , because you are good, and they openly say they are made in China for the best quality!!!
Can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate these videos. I’ve made so many god damn mistakes as a producer over the last 10 years. I’ve started mixing so much better after watching some of your breakdowns. Legit 🤙🏼
You’ll be the perfect “victim” for my upcoming academy! ❤️🤪
As someone shopping for drum overhead mics now for my currently in progress home studio, videos like this are very helpful. Thank you very much.
sE Electronics is such a massively underrated company. I absolutely love my X1 S vocal mic, super clean and clear, good bass, amazing price. I'd love to get my hands on a sE2200 or even their sE4400a. Everything they make is affordable and beautiful and sounds amazing.

Man, phenomenal content. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Wow, those X1Rs are really nice-it’s like adding a room mic without having to worry about phase issues.
Hey Kohle, the "Mics used" link does not work. :-(
Working now?
Sounds great! Link seems to be broken though 💔
Does it work now?
@@KohleAudioKult yes! Sorted 😎
This was a really cool and timely video! Finally breaking out of quarantine and the drummer and I can start working together again. These mics will definitely be considered for our upcoming work!
Nice comparation. Good to know more about sE electronics mics. Impressed with this quality ❤️❤️
Awesome kohle I'm already on the email list how can I enter the contest?
You comment is done, so just send the email so I know you're in!
Damn Kohle, don't do that, I need to blame the equipament, you got a very good sound out of cheap mics. Now i'll have to find a different excuse to sound like sh*t.
Haha! Sorry!
Haha, nicely done CrushingAxes!
@@Producelikeapro 🤣🤣🤣
This is perfect! I've been researching drum mics the last few days. I've just use a lot of SM57s and cheaper Shures. I just upgrade my mic pre's so now I can record 16 channels now. Definitely getting some SE electronics mics now. I need a bottom snare, hi hat and room mic.
A video about ribbons in front of an amp would be really interesting! Especially since I only heard those in smoother context compared to metal riffing.
I found up close it picks up the low end really strongly, but paired with a bright mic they sound great blended!
I never win shit, that's why I didn't think twice about selling my soul to the devil 👿 🤣
One day I'll have cool mics, and a pointy tail.
have never seen keller get triggered until he started talking about that tom clamp
"It's more detailed, but this is rock and roll" f@#k yeah. Subscribed.
I’ve been using the Lewitt stuff and loving it.
Oh yeah. Lewitt is on the list too. Heard good things about their pencil condensers
Im so glad that there are companies like se electronics and people like u. There are so many people who would tell u that you need to spend insane amount of money to make good music. So thanx for showing us beginners the true.
SE electronics continue to amaze me. I some of their multipattern condensers. Now I want some XR 1. Thank you for the great video.
Great info on affordable mikes . You’re always trying to help us budget guys out . Between you and Glenn Fricker beginning recording engineers can get a great education on the CHEAP. You provide a great service
I love your no bs video! My favorite thing is that you give your opinion without making seem like the only option and your open minded to trying things without bias. Great work keep up the videos! Loved Your Guitar tone course!
Thanks man!
I know that there are lots of people out there who create killer sounds using very different equipment than me!
So my taste and opinion can’t be absolute
Hey Kristian-You are one of my favorite newer producer you-tubers-and...you know I never thought about darker mics being easier to brighten up. Thank you for posting!
Thanks for the advice Kristian, I liked the dark sounding ribbon mics for over heads.
In perfect timing your video my friend Christian. It's time to buy some microphones for my under construction studio and the times are difficult for expensive ones! Thank you for your great video!
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! Really liked the overhead mic comparison.
Great video. I don't have the option to record real drums, but these videos can be translated into how to adjust Superior/EZ Drummer settings because Kohle's explanation is so clear and simple.
Wow! Didn't expect that from so affordable mics!
Again detailed, helpful and entertaining! Love your way of explanation, keep rockin!
That was very helpful for me as a newbie when it comes to recording live drums. Thanks Kristian! 🤘🏻
Very helpful stuff mate, danke! Will absolutely come back when ordering drum mic's this summer!
I’ve been wanting a pair of those X1R for ages so as I’ve been wanting to mix for my own IRs I totally vouch for SE electronics I’ve got the Se2000 and love it to bits. Love your videos Kohle!
I was searching for a video like that for so long!!! There are so many cheap mics that work but don't sound that good. And now I can make a choice. THANKS!!! 🤩
Just purchased a full set of SE mics a few weeks ago for my drum studio , the ribon mics would be completely amazing to complete my sound 🙏🏾
Excellent! Best vid on this subject yet. And you changed my mind. I now like the ribbon better for overheads.
i cant belive how good it sounds the V7X on the kickdrum specially with the mojo knob
Toller Sound! Werde ich auf jeden Fall in Betracht ziehen, wenn ich demnächst mein Studio aufrüsten möchte!
id love to see more vids on mic comps! very cool thank you for this!
Always loved sE !! Thank you for this video man. Rock n Love ! 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻
I’m really surprised how well the V7X worked on the kick. Very informative video! Thank you.
i have never heard of SE before up until i came across your videos and NTM session. i end up purchasing a pair of se7 condenser mics and has been the best mic purchase i have done. i have not used a Ribbon mic and looking forward in adding one of those to my mic library. keep up the awesome job !
Ah man! This is a great AB comparison!! Love from New Zealand!!
The V beat sonically is the V7X. Both are supercardioid. They are different than the cardioid V7, which also sounds differently.
Oh really. Then I stand corrected. Let me look that up
I am currently working on my first proper mixes and using RUclips to teach myself as I go. However I used 2 completely different mics for overheads when I recorded the drums because it was all I had access to (and I had no room mics). I'd love a pair of overhead mics! Keep up the great content!
This information was extremely helpful as I have recently opened my own studio! Thank you for this!
So cool you make this comparative vidéo about cheap mics, especially on ribbon's one !!! You give us magical Keys to get professionnal tracks to work with !!! Thanks a lot !!! 🍻👍
Hey Kohle, now had the time to watch the video - sooooo awesome. We are currently planning recording drums for our upcoming album, and these microphones would be a godsend! But whoever participates in this, good luck to all of 'em!
Wow, thanks. I bought V7x after watching this video. Works great 8n snare, so I got back to the store and bought 3 more. These work great on racktoms as well. THANK YOU MAN.
Awesome mic! Also works nicely on vocals and guitars.
Very exciting video, thanks! It would be nice hearing the differences of the mics in a full mix, too.
Nice comparison! I always tend to use bright sounding overheads, but now am inspired to experiment with a darker sound...
Much better if you ask me! But depends on how you mix.
Been looking forward to a drum mic video for awhile, thank you!
More in the works! You're wlecome!
I own 4 Audix D clamps and they don't rattle and work great for me but you are right about the price. it's absolutely unjustified.
Awesome video. I like when people like you that have good gear, good rooms and such show that you can make good recordings with cheaper gear!
Thank you Kristian for th review. It help me to find good affordable mics! 🎙️🎤🎤🎤🥁
Always enjoy these kind of videos. I've been looking at the SE8 for a little while so nice to hear them in action. The Audix D2 sounded nice too!
glad I'm not the only one who thinks sm57-like microphones works for everything!!! that sev7x seems neat by the way!!! thanks for all the knowledge!!!
Been using the sE Arena drum mic kit for my recent recordings. Might need to check out these X1R’s!!
Perfect timing for this video, I'm researching some mics for overheads and room purposes! I'm currently using a pair of AKG C1000 for overheads, and need more options!
I always enjoy watching your videos! Super helpful and informative. I recently just got into recording and am slowly building up my mic locker. I love the way those ribbons sounded on the overheads and room mics! Thanks for sharing!
I'd love to see a shootout of beginner drum mic kits at various price points like the Behringer BC1200 that you mentioned, something affordable like the Shure PGA7 and then something higher end like the Audix DP7. Love your videos!
Thanks for the video Kristian!!! I need this X1RS mics.
Thanks so much for another great video!!!! Super stoked to hear the se electronics in more depth!!!!! Much love from Edmonton Canada!!!!!
Thanks, that was a useful rundown. I use the Beta52A for kick in. I mix it with the WA U47 FET Jr. for kick out. Not a very cheap mic, but still relatively affordable, and can do mono overheads or mono room too, plus bass cab, smooth vox. I like the bass response of the Audix D4 for floor tom, and do use the D2 for rack tom. But that SE V7X did maybe sound better than D2. The SE8s sounded really good. For cheaper SDCs, I do love the Line Audio CM4, at about 110 eur. For ribbons GAP R1s are nice. Like you, I like the Cranbourne Camden EC1 Mojo set to 'Thump' for kick.
Best beer ever? Pilsner! Greetings from Czech. Great videos you make!
Haha! Been to Prague last year to work with Dymytry. Great beer for sure! A little too bitter for my taste though!
@@KohleAudioKult I love Dymytry and now i know where their great sound come from :D Well, bitter is good for me, but nothing can be good for everyone.
Great video, loved the comparisons- thx for highlighting some of sE's offerings!
Hey Kristian! What an awesome video once again! Thanks for the great content you always delivers! 🖤
Lewitt 140 airs are my favorite overheads for sure. Huge upgrade from the single behringer b5 pencil mic😭
I love using the sE Voodoo's in a Blumlein configuration. I usually put those about 12-15 ft. out in front of the kit, and then throw up either the U87 or the Rode K2 about 25-30 ft. away, maybe 15-18 ft. up.
Hey Kristian maybe a good hack to do on the kick drum would be putting the SE mic a bit deeper in the kick to get more attack and then add a car speaker wired with a jack to capture alot of sub frequency information. The sub mic is technically free if you can find a old broken car speakers.
The Electrovoice PL 33 can be had for about 90 euros, and the Akg D112mk2 for about 120.Both amazing kick drum mics.PL33 is more modern and metal,D112 is a little more natural but still a serious and classic kick mic. They are great for their price.
Very interesting results for a very in demand topic! Well done!
Super helpful video thank you. We are recording our debut album ourselves and this had definitely helped me decide on a mic. Thanks 😊
Always happy to help!
This video is to cool. Really liked the overhead shoot out! Very interesting.
I like seeing all of these budget friendly options for drum mics, will definitely need to check out SE electronics!
Very interesting video! I learn a lot by watching your videos. Please do more drum stuff!
haven't had the chance yet to record real drums but I definitely want to at some point and this info is invaluable, thank you so much
You should! It’s fun!
@@KohleAudioKult as soon as our rehearsal space is open I'll bother my drummer until he lets me :p
Something nice ;) I started with the Tbone kit and now I am slowly upgrading. I recently got the Audix D6 for the Kick Drum, using a Sennheiser E 935 on the Snare. I bought the E935 for vocals but my voice sounds better on the Rode M2 because of the high-end tones of my timber. So I thought it should work perfectly on the snare, and I am loving it.
Thank you for this informative and funny vid. SE mics aren't on my screen until now..Worth a try.
As always another great video. Like your approach to use room mics.
Great video. I'm just starting a home studio and it's so useful to see this comparison and get an idea of the sound from this mics
i'd love to see these mics on guitar/bass cabs!! love the videoz!
Mr. Kohlmannslehner thank you very much for all the amazing content and knowledge you're giving us.
You're the best.
How polite! ;)

Would it be possible to do a video on mixing symphonic metal songs in a style of Nightwish, Epica, Xandria...?
This is a great video!!! Very excited to try the X 1R. Great sound for the price.
Thanks for all this information! All your videos on speakers were really helpful in my tone quest, and learning more on mics will definitely be useful!
This demonstration was a necessary vehicle to assist new engineers from becoming Tiffany twisted regarding microphones, and gear in general. I have to admit that the Se dynamic is indeed an SM-57 killer. Thank you for this honest and informative session. Prost!
Just came from a drum practice session and here you are with freshly cooked video =) when I finish building my studio I would definitely buy an 8 channel preamp and bunch of mics to record real drums with real driving energy
