Thank you for this advice! I'd definitely been "saving my energy" for the end of the race, but having a fast pace to begin with instead has consistently helped my overall time.
Bad advice though. You should have a kick at the end. Look at Butch Reynold's world record. He started at a decent pace (not too fast but not slow either) whereas another sprinter in that race blasted out of the blocks and had a clear lead for the first 200m or so. Butch kept a steady pace and by the 300m went past the fast starter and finished the race faster than anyone ever has to this day (fastest last 100m in a 400m ever since 1988 while Wayde Van Neikerk had the slowest last 100m in record). It took Michael Johnson 11 years to break that record. He knew about pacing strategy while Butch only had one great race like that. Saying someone should run 1 tenth slower than their 100m PB in the first 100m in a 400m race is stupid (the advice in this video) no disrespect to the guy but it's not good for longevity and you will burn out at some point. Never ever go out too fast because the fastest ever 400m run (42.9 by MJ in a relay in college) was run with a kind acceleration not rapid. The Way to Win and Sprint Speed Media have great videos on 400m pacing. Someday I'll prove it with fast times myself but I'm recovering from old injuries at the moment. Good day
Last 100 if u ask yourself why the hell am I running this shit, u really don’t want it that bad bc you’re letting yourself get distracted, it’s how I view finish strong in a 400m dash 🤷♂️
Michael Norman has a PB of 9.86 and Michael Johnson was 10.07. I asking you based on what you suggest an athlete should run all out their first 100 meters.
@Lamar Berry the 400 is a use it ot lose it energy distribution event. Norman comes through the first 100 I'm 10.80 and does a 10.27in the 2nd 100. These are recorded splits from his 43.8 400m in college. He's simply that good at holding and maintaining whereas a HS athlete may not be. So you'd have to go dang near all out anyway

So essentially what my high school coaches said… just go ham lol
