Being among the first to stand beneath Cod when that water drained out was still, for me, peak history nerd performance. Thanks again Paul for the experience. Still one of the best and most significant days of my life. Paul, you are an awesome video host. You're used to getting audio bombed by aircraft.
I was fortunate enough to go on that tour, it was worth it! Funny enough I was going to bust Ryan's chops about Paul..... but I forgot. What a loss, this video came out only a week after. I could have gave Paul and Ryan something to talk about lol 😂 Sidenote: I started watching this channel from Battleship NJs channel.... so I love to see these two together! Great video!
Paul, you are absolutely right when speaking of that emotional reaction. The first time I got to spend a day aboard New Jersey, I just sort of took everything in and let the ship “speak to me” in a sense, and I realized that what I was seeing, being enveloped in, 80 years of history, was all around me, tangible, and still alive in that moment, and that that was because the ship is still here and still cared for. One moment, you’re in CEC, surrounded by control consoles that still look more or less modern - and then you step outside and you’re confronted by the remains of a gun mount from 1943. There aren’t many places in this world where you can experience that contrast of old and new, that sense of “this is something far greater than the sum of its parts” - New Jersey is one of those places, one of those vehicles, one of those quasi-living entities. Museum ships are the only places where you *necessarily* must interact intimately with the artifact; you can’t help but start to think about living and working like the crews did, because you’re using the same ladders, operating the same doors and hatches that they did. In a sense, you become a reenactor when you visit a museum ship - and that’s something so very unique and so very important that we can preserve and present to as many people as possible.
A really good point briefly made. If you want to bring a museum ship to your community - you really have to think about whether you're going to be able to afford the maintenance over time.
You guy have a great chemistry when you produce together. Perhaps some future videos finding Naval stuff together, either related to the two boats or not. Thank you for this post.
I was stationed in San Diego (VS -41) when the New Jersey paid a visit, on its way to Viet Nam. Docked right behind (from my view point) was the USS Constellation. I was amazed at just how big the New Jersey really is, when compared to (what was at that time) a front line aircraft carrier. The old girl looks good. Maybe ALL the Iowa class battle hips can be restored to first class condition. ;-)
The curator humour is sooooo flowing in this video....love it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well one thing is for sure, both USS Cod and New Jersey will be the belle's of the museum ship ball once they've finished their dry dock spells, and Paul, regardless of how many museum subs are out there, there's never enough, the the Cod will be a beautiful rendition of her former self once she's back...brilliant work to both museums and all involved!!!! Cheers from Sydney Aus!!!!
March 1915 HMS Dreadnought sank u29 the only battleship ever to sink a submarine intentionally by ramming When Dreadnought was launched in 1906 her size speed and fire power made all other battleships obsolete
I remember pulling into Sasebo, Japan two days before the mighty New Jersey. What a site to see. At quarters, our COB told us," Don't fight with the battleship sailors." Paul and Ryan have important tasks keeping the memories alive. After all is said and done, we are on the same bad ass team.
I’ve not had the pleasure of seeing Cod in dry dock, but I have seen HMCS Ojibwa in Port Burrell Ontario. They’re only about100 miles apart as the crow flies. It’s blocked up on land there, and it’s 15’ shorter, but I do have an idea what it’d be like to see Cod out of the water. I’ve nothing to compare for New Jersey. It must seem massive standing underneath it.
Video idea. Can you do an episode on the mark 18 electric torpedo? We always hear about the mark 14 torpedo, it would be cool to hear about the mark 18 electric torpedo.
I heard the Souls of Battleship Ghosts thunder a broadside about kill ratios, Sir - care to surface and 'talk' about it? What's that? Can't hear you, 'Silent Service'... What's the matter - your screen door jammed again? ;) Respect to all those who go down to the Sea in Ships...

Paul As a submariner you are using the wrong word at the beginning of the video when referring to USS New Jersey as a battleship. The correct word for you is ‘ target’.
Pretty sure USS Texas got out just before New Jersey started her drydock. Ryan did a few visits to her a while back. Let's just say that USS Cod vs NJ's drydock is a proper comparison of NJ's drydock vs. Texas's. It is amazing they got the funds back to save her.
Needs to be in water or something that gives pressure to the sides. With out that pressure, eventually battleships will pancake under their own weight.
I live in Monterey CA and remember when the San Francisco city supervisors rejected the USS Iowa because "it represents war". One sup, Gerado Sandoval allowed himself to be interviewed on Sean Hannity's show and made a complete woke ass out of himself...
Love when we get Ryan and Paul in the same video. Never fails to amuse.
Love the rapport between Paul and Ryan!

The Philadelphia airport called me and asked me to quiet down... 😂
It's great when you two get together. More content like this would be wonderful...
Look at Paul, always representing the Cod with the sticker and his enlisted dungarees. You can't get more real than this.

Great video, Paul! After all the drydocking is done, you and Ryan should have a livestreamed pedantry contest.

Love the info you both have to offer. Can't believe the costs involved in the restoration.

This is great. I hope that the Olympia can be preserved
Amazing video! So proud to have people who are so dedicated to preserving our icons.
Great to see both of you together! Breaks my heart to not be able to make it to the dry dock for personal reasons...
Always a pleasure when you gentlemen get together.

Paul; be advised I warned Libby you were trying to relocate her Battleship. 🤣😂.

We're three years out of our drydock (2021) but thanks for your kind words!
The answer to the famous question, “What’s up Dock?”.
Nice to see you both in one video. The sizes of the ships might be different but the jobs and aims are the same .

Ojibwa is the nearest sub to us! Greetings from across Erie.

Good Job!
Thank You 🙂

Good video, and nice hard hat! 😄
Air draft is part of the problem for USS Ling sitting in the Hackensack River
It's the least of her problems... those bridges can open...

I think those were 787's, or 777's.
BB35 is undergoing the same thing just a little further along down inTexas

A state representative who served.....hum...
Did Paul bring Ryan a pencil sharpener...?
Ryan has have to needed one with all the notes he's been taking from below the water line!!!
We brought him four fluorescent fixtures and a gigantic galley ladle, but no pencil sharpener. Maybe next visit!
⚓
Sad to say, but she is a big target for the Cod.
Thought for the day: Consider in the future, when the hull gets thinner due to corrosion, storing the battleship in a dry dock.
Needs to be in water or something that gives pressure to the sides. With out that pressure, eventually battleships will pancake under their own weight.
Posting this on more than one channel isn't helping.
Two lifetimes. Five years.❤😂❤ 😂❤😂
Could we get USS Cod in World of Warships for a fundraising effort like we did with Texas 5-6 years ago? For Texas the players raised $150K.
I see you haven't read the Iliad. Achilles replacement shield and armor were forged by Hephaestus.
