I have boxes of these bulbs I bought them at a army surplus store in Calgary Canada now I know what they are for so cool
Best videos about historical boats
I think as a kid riding in a car back in the 50's and 60's with my parents both smoking like chimneys, in the winter, windows all rolled up, must have been just as bad. It did have one good outcome, it cured me of ever wanting to smoke.
That "blue" bulb was made before colour was invented. The world used to be black and white as anyone can see in old movies. Since blue and red were the same the bulb in the video is actually blue but some uncultured people might mistake it for red.
I got my cigarettes for 25 cents a pack at the PX circa late ‘70s and smoked on the boats including even an occasional cigar because the navigator on the John Marshall SSBN 611 would give each of the quartermaster gang a cigar to smoke while on manuevering watch since with the hatch open running on the surface we got all of that fresh air in the control room. One of the other QMs also smoked a pipe. Today there are no QMs on submarines or so I’ve been told.
Sorta makes you thankful for nose blindness, doesn't it?
In regards to the rubber rings depending on how close you want it to be to the authentic ones you could have some 3d printed. They would be what I would call 3 foot correct as you likely wouldn't notice unless 3 feet or closer.
LSMFT
10:54. I assume that's real footage of a depth charge hit and it's humbling and somber.. obviously your glad it's them not you, but knowing the horror occurring has to be tough to imagine. Especially since it's men who probably had no beef with the enemy and it's asshole leaders wanting that war. I've never seen a clip like that, makes me have more respect for that ww2 generation even though it's already maxed out. 🇺🇸🤘🇺🇸🫡
Really like the clip with Mr. Warmth!
Sound powered phone with each station having a switch board phone Its also a Party line
In the early 1980s you could smoke anywhere except Medical on NAVY ships, I frikn hated it, lagging was stained all brown and yellow. Glad when they did away with it and only one designated smoking area on ships. It just looks so silly for anyone smoking.
Tobacco, the infamous gateway drug to... more tobacco.
I assume you could not smoke while submerged and running on air scrubbers. Wish you had addressed when you could and could not smoke.
You could always smoke in WWII... except in very rare times when the hydrogen detection machine indicated levels above 3%. You confuse us with a general submarine channel. We talk about Cod in WWII. There were no air scrubbers in our era.. that's nuke stuff. Besides our dubs were surfaced mostly so there was good ventilation from outside.
I only smoked on subs after a few Otto fuel cocktails
My dad died a week short of getting to 80. My mom died age 91 and my aunt died age 99.5. All loved smoking to the very end. Either you have 'Tobacco God' genes or your Caveman fire smoke genes have become so defective you have become 'Dainty'.
The best video on the rubbish bins on the whole Internet. Yes, I have checked.
A whole boatload of passion in this project.
With the highest mortality rate of any service, I don't think that Bubbleheads were concerned about the affects of smoking.
When I was in the service and overseas… I remember thinking… if I made a list of things trying to kill me tobacco is way down on the list. When I got home… it was a poor health choice and an expensive smelly habit. Overseas it was a luxury in the field. I always smoked overseas.
I'm late to the party but have a couple of questions, as others have posted how were the torpedo's indexed in the tube so they lined up with the spindles. You showed speed and depth setting but how was the Gyro angle communicated to the torpedo?
I was in the Marine Corps in the early 70's and in our barracks we had brass shell casings for butt cans. Everyone who smoked had their own ashtray in their locker, but they'd empty it in the shell casing instead of the trash can to keep a fire from starting. We were still issued C-Rats for meals in the bush and they came with a five pack of cigarettes and water resistant matches. Most of the cigarettes we got were non-filter Luck Strike, Camel or Pall Mall. We seldom ever got a filtered cigarette in the C-Rations.
🏆Great colab from the two best naval YT channels, Brilliant!
Is USS Cod a Grotto Class submarine
9:52 lost me at women on subs. It's just not a goddamn natural. Don't even like the thought of them on surface combatants ... Put on subs? Unless every man gets a split tail I'm thinking it's somebody else's navy. King's parents was the first Academy to have female midshipmen. Look up Connie Buhl, but I don't get it in such cramped quarters, immature young squids. Somebody's coming out of this patrol / cruise /deployment knocked up, say nothing of all the guys getting the clap. USMMA 1982, USNR 82-89, MSC-PAC 84-85. (No particular valor.)
Back in 1971 while at Fort Dix for AIT we had to spend 10 to 20 minutes every morning picking up dirty cigarette butts from around the huge three story barracks and in the woods. Always thought that non smokers should have been given some other detail.
AHHH I noticed the word BLUE and hoped you were gonna tell us!
The only good thing about cigarettes man when your stressed out theres nothing like that first long drag off a butt calms you down why don't know nothing like it
$9.00 a pack! I remember when they were $.30 a pack and you could buy them from a machine.
Me too😅
If the war didn’t kill them, the cigarettes would. 😳😳
I thought they stopped making unfiltered Luck Strike.
Nope
How much was pack of Luckies in ww2? Like 9 cents?
the V-shaped bracket that held the butt kit could also hold a zarf. This was a cup holder. This allowed you to somewhat customize your work space depending on your preference.
How many cartons of cigarettes did each sailor get to bring with them?
As many as they could stow....
The aroma of a boat must have hit the nose like a brick .
A Japanese destroyer captain stated that they sunk an American submarine at seeing a cigarette being smoked on the bridge at night.
Disgusting
So some of those Mazda light bulbs had a trick that I can't remember how exactly it happened, but they were also very efficient with long life. They also had a very hard vacuum in them. This allowed them to create RF interference. As a ~5 year old I remember my dad and uncles trying to figure out why great grandma's TV was all static on a channel or 2. After giving up on the antenna wiring in the attic the problem went away. Someone went back up there and the problem came back. Great Grandma had left the Mazda bulb on in the attic previously and it caused the problem. All 3 involved had EET degrees, so it dumbfounded them. Post internet I read something about it.
I wonder why that would cause rf interference
Great grandma's (presumably old) house may have had knob and tube wiring in the attic. If the antenna wiring was ran near the attic's lighting circuit that could create the described situation. The unshielded K&T wires would generate electrical interference once the light is turned on.
My grandfather lived in Manitowoc, WI during WWII and mother said he invited sailors home for dinner every day.
Cigarettes are bad for a sailor's health. But depth charges are worse.
The ones that died from this smoking are not around to tell you what a horrible idea this was.
Horrible idea what us? You mean telling about what and how it happened? I totally disagree!
@@paulfarace9595 What?
You should see if a thermos maker has a way to replicate them and wants to donate the basic shape. Yeti is out of Texas I think and probably could use a donation or 2.
Former MM3(SS) A- Ganger here. I was on a 637 Class boat. When I was in, it seemed like 90% of us smoked, including myself. It wasn't a big deal back then.
Loading using ropes , Pulleys and Blocks & Tackles ... I used this method on afew occasions myself while serving U.S. Navy 1971 - 76
Is it true that there were ashtrays mounted to the side of missile tube's on nuke boats at one time?
If they were mounted everywhere else on attack subs, I wouldn't be shocked if they were mounted to missile tubes... a smooth smoke on multi-megaton thermonuclear warhead seems appropriate to me!😅😅
This brought back a deep rooted childhood memory. My dad took me to see the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and that was okay, but I kept pointing out there wanting to see the Cod. Of course, he was just as pumped as me, and I cranked the deck gun and still remember how smooth it traversed with very little effort, but it was scary slow. I bought the shirt with the COOLEST logo ever.
It's surprising to realize that my recent events are others ancient childhood memories!😢😮😅❤
@paulfarace9595 it's bad ass. I tell anyone with kids going to Cleveland they got to see the Cod. Universally boys will absolutely love it.
I remember seeing them in the theaters on base also.
Related... Some years ago my partner gave me a complete set of Perry Mason CDs. During dinner we watched every episode in order. After about the 3rd or 4th episode we started keeping track of how many minutes into the program before someone offered another a cigarette. The average ended up being 1.5 minutes.
I quit in 1980 lol I bought a carton of Camels for $2.00 on base no tax for military 35 cents a pack I'm glad I stopped when I did the price is wild. the lower ranks E1, E2 emptied the ash trays.
"THE SMOKING LAMP IS OUT" Also, the platform aft of the scope shears (where a 20mm or 40mm gun was mounted) was known as the 'cigarette deck'.
Bad on us to not mention that... thanks for doing so!
