From what I gathered, Emmitt seems like he was a genuine guy, a man. Pat wasn’t able to effectively communicate to him what she needed. So it didn’t work. Don’t think she was a gold digger, or has an agenda. She just didn’t fully developed herself. I believe that’s something that every woman should do before entering marriage.
