  • Another day of seat racing today so another chat. This time, since my housemate Tim has returned from his travelling I thought it would be good to do something a little bit different!
We explain what seat racing is and how results are calculated. Seat racing, like we said, is a very important tool to have is a coaches arsenal of selections tools. Some coaches use it heavily, others do not. At Leander we use it on top of results throughout the year to decide what racing crews will be like for the summer.

What happens when the performance of other rowers doesn't remain constant? Either just as a random fluke or - and I'm not saying it happens at Leander - because they yam less on purpose.

There is a possibility of other rowers intentionally screwing someone else over, but usually those are pretty rare and an experienced coach can usually pick up on those cases. In the case of inconsistent results its really up to the coach. I've had seat races run multiple times to increase the certainty of the results, or in some cases I've seen coaches intentionally take the worse result of an inconsistent athlete knowing that during race day they could very easily deliver their floor rather than their best.

Sean is pretty spot on. Experienced coaches should be able to spot if it happened but it shouldn't be happening in the first place!

Do you seat race on a set rating? I have had experiences of both capped and uncapped in New Zealand, and in my opinion a set racing 2-4 points below race beat is the most effective. Great video.

We do not actually. The racing is flat out, as fast as you can go!
